I have been using Megapop packs and I have found that the popcorn seems to have an inordinate amount of husk pieces. by that I mean the very thin kernal covering pieces. I am not talking about lots of unpopped kernals or anything but whatever those tiny skin like kernal cover bits are called.

Question is have others here found that to be the case as well?

Yeah, kind of I guess. I figured it was just the case with popcorn, but I definately don't get that with microwave bags. A good test would be to take the coconut oil and salt from a pre-pak and slip in some kernels from something else (like a Redenbacher's jar) and see.

yes I think I might just do that. I have regular bars of coconut oil and the flavacol separate as well so I will also try that with other corn but wondered how many people had noticed this.

The outer part of the kernel is called the Hull. All corn has hulls. This is what keeps the moisture sealed inside of the kernel until it is popped. What you may be experiencing is hulls that are thicker or more coarse. If the hulls are releasing and you have free hulls in your popcorn you may just need to toss it more before bagging it. Kind of like removing the chaff from the wheat.

I am glad you brought this up McCall as I recently purchased some megapop prepacks and have noticed the same thing. I think I will do the same test this evening.

No it is not that the hulls are coming loose in the corn but rather in your mouth, much more than any other popcorn I have ever eaten.
and I do toss it, but perhaps I will try tossing it a LOT more before taking any.

Popcorn has thick hulls while sweet eating corn has thin hulls. The thick hulls allow the pressure to build inside of the corn and then when the kernel explodes, you get a larger popped corn. If you tried to pop sweet corn, the steam would just seep out and you would have dried up kernels. I am somewhat thinking that these thicker hulls may go with the territory but it may also vary batch to batch or brand to brand.

I would agree with you except that as I say I have never had this problem with any other popcorn not that bought in a theater or at an amusement park or microwave or other types of poppers using regular popcorn.

It has been only this brand so far. I find that every mouthful I take of this I have several hulls that I have to remove from my mouth.

that is why I asked if others have had the problem because SO many here use megapop.

This brief excerpt taken from a website may shed some light on your question:

We get asked on a regular basis about the size of the kernel or the size of the popcorn when it is popped. Many people when making kettle corn or carmel popcorn want larger sized popped popcorn. The ideal popcorn for making carmel corn or kettle popcorn is the XL Yellow Popcorn. This popcorn pops up Extra Large and tastes great.
The next set of people are new to hulless popcorn and they wonder about the difference in size of the hulless vs the other popcorns.
There are varying degrees of hulless popcorn . (See the older articles on hulless popcorn.) The more hulless the popcorn the smaller the kernel and the popcorn when popped. This is part of the reason for the popcorn being hulless in the first place.
If you are wanting to stay with a bigger kernel but still go with the hulless popcorn then we recommend the Gourmet White Popcorn. This one is about the same in size as the other popcorns but is considered to be hulless. This popcorn is going to have the most hulls of the hulless popcorns however.

Inside the "Windows Kernel" hehehehehehe..........
