View Full Version : Heres a cheap solution for cooling down the equipment closet.
drunkpenguin 07-09-07, 08:09 PM I'd been searching and searching and even posted a question a while back and never found a real good solution until I came accrost this at home depot. For me it'll work perfect as my equiptment closets back wall neighbors with another room in the house so I'll be able to blow out hot air into that room, rather than my HT. I plan to put an intake hole at the bottom of the wall and mount this at the top of the wall so it sucks in cool air from down low and blows it back out up high.
Just in case anybody else is looking for these and don't know they exist.

BIGmouthinDC 07-09-07, 08:26 PM Good find. How would you rate the sound it puts out?
drunkpenguin 07-09-07, 08:30 PM I'll tell you when I hook it up as I just ordered it today but the reviews on the HD site all call it very quiet. I plan to seal the door in my closet so noise shouldn't be much of an issue for me but after I hook it up I'll test it with my noise meter thingamajic and let ya know. It has 2 speeds and Im assuming for a closet low should be plenty of air movement.
dazed_n_confuzed 07-09-07, 09:51 PM This look interesting. Please report back to give your impressions. Is your equipment room totally self contained say in a closet for example? You should run your equipment w/out the fan and take a temp reading then turn on the fan and note the difference. When I finally get to my HT build I'm planning on having a equipment rack at the back of the room where the back of the equipment is in a storage area and this may be the ticket for air circulation. I thought about several of the "pancake" fans that computers use, but this looks like a more sensible solution.
Living up to my user name,

tradewinds 07-09-07, 11:50 PM great find...it implies it is quiet. Please let us know. Thanks.
I used a bathroom fan rated at 1.4 sones at the high setting. it is very quiet it vents out my side wall. I actually have three of these one over my projector, one in equipment room area which is adjacent to my concession room which also has one over the popcorn machine.
drunkpenguin 07-13-07, 09:09 PM Well I'm not sure if Im going to keep it. This thing seems a bit louder than advertised. Of course quiet to some is not the same quiet to an audiophile. From 3 ft. away in my theater closet (which is echo city) it reads about 70db. If I set the fan on the floor in my sound treated theater it reads about 64db from 3' away. Incidentally my el cheapo bathroom fans read about 64db as well. When I close my theater closet I can hear the thing running, of course I havent sealed up the door yet.
So I dont know, Im wondering if it will be quieter once its mounted into the wall. Is it worth trying? Also does anybody know if I wired this up with a dimmer switch if I could turn the fan down without burning it up? This thing moves a ton of air even on low so a lower speed would still work for me.
tradewinds 07-13-07, 11:58 PM man, this does not sound promising. I bought a PJ that gets pretty hot and was going to use this in the ceiling above it to move the air.
bigDvette 07-14-07, 12:22 AM Here is what I have done after getting irritated by all the so called quiet 120v fans. I bought the Middle Atlantic quiet fans for my rack, but they were as loud as I've heard. I bought an exaust fan and it too was too loud.
I started doing CFM comparisons and PC fans are great.
I took a 4" PC fan and bought a dryer vent louvered exhaust. I cut a hole in teh wall and installed the louvered dryer vent and then cust a small wood bracket and a installed a 120mm fan to it. I used a PC temperature control to control the speed and it even goes off below 80 degrees.
Mine vents in to the attic space. I have 2 and they cost like $20 for both to make.
On the MA rack, I installed 2 130MM thermaltake fans that push 60CFM each and that is as much as the QFAN from MA. It puts out 16DB between the 2.
MA has a fan I used as my template and it uses very quiet PC fans and has a similar vent cover to the one picutred above. However, I found it expensive for what it was.

it is called cab-cool.
drunkpenguin 07-14-07, 07:28 PM Well, I decided I didn't feel like dealing with sending it back and started cutting out holes in the drywall. I'm pretty happy with this thing now that its been installed! Its not silent by any means but with my closet door shut I can barely hear the thing running and I have not yet sealed that door with weatherstriping. Inside the closet it registers about 70db. The closet right now is 4 bare walls and a tile floor. Im sure I could quiet it down alot with sound sound obsorption. It seems much quieter once its in the wall. I guess half the sound is on the other side of the wall now. As far as cooling goes it works VERY well. Before I would walk into that closet and it felt like a sauna, but now its as cool as the rest of the house. So I wouldnt recomend it for those that would use it between the theater and their closet as its too loud for that, but if you have a backwall in your closet that goes to another room it might work for ya.
What about one of these? Only 4"...

I use these Panasonic fans in my home and theater, and love their quietness. They're great! My equipment closet uses the Panasonic FV-05VQ2 (60 CFM, < 0.3 sones) switched on by a 110v thermostat mounted at about 7’ from floor.
