View Full Version : PS3 a better value than 360?
At $499 I think the PS3 is a better value than the 360. I mean don't get me wrong I love my 360 it's the best system out there for gaming right now, but at $479 the elite doesn't really compare. PS3 had built in wifi, BluRay, all of which adds up to an additional $299 on 360. S199 for HD-DVD, $99 for wifi. So guys what am really saying is microsoft needs to step up to the plate here.At $499 is
tokerblue 07-09-07, 09:52 PM The better value is the system that has more appealing games to YOU.
acegamer 07-09-07, 09:54 PM It's all about the games. The PS3 doesn't have the game library yet to make it a better value than the 360 yet. Having better technology is meaningless without the games to back it up. I like my PS3 but it has been used for Blu-Ray movies about 90% of the time so far. The games just aren't there yet. If I had to choose then I would definitely give up my PS3 before giving up my 360 right now. Thankfully I don't have to choose so they are both staying put. :)
spinksjinx 07-09-07, 09:55 PM Sony already had a ps3 at $499 and it didnt sell or produce more games to come out.
As a gaming machine hell no its not...As a video player hell yes it is...
The Elite is complete trash, the ps3 is not far from that..The premium the sweet spot..
If you are into games you get a 360 (unless your favorites are cross platformed) and like older movie the 360 is your choice...If you like the crap of new movies and average portitis games you go with the ps3.
That said, I have both...Love them equally but use them for different purposes, I am sorry I just dont like my ps3 as a gaming machine...The games suck and it still doesnt fix the fact that the controller is utter garbage.
Ps3 is by far a better value now(if u are looking for a HD video player and wifi) after the $100 price cut compared to the elite. But like other people have said it's about the games so the best value has to be the 360 if that is what ur looking for.

Ok but to the average Joe walking into a store asking a store clerk what is the difference between these 2 machines. Or a parent going to buy one for their child I think PS3 wins.

I disagree. The average Joe would definately go for the 360 IMO, because the average joe would be more concerned about games than about the Blu-
Ray movie capability of the PS3. High-def movies are still a very niche area right now, while games are universally loved and wanted.
The average joe also(more than likely) wouldn't have an hdtv so that makes the hd movie part of the ps3 useless.
Low Roller 07-09-07, 10:27 PM Considering the 360 is rumored to be getting a price trim of its own (http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=6299&Itemid=2) tomorrow, the Xbox is easily the better value IMO. It has a better current game line up, and that looks to continue. Upcoming 360 exclusives appeal more to me than PS3 exclusives so far.
Personally, BR adds little to the 'value' proposition.
The PS3 is all about potential. Wake me when its realized......

I would hope Average Joe has a little more sense than to ask a clerk about a $600 dollar excuse me $500 dollar purchase and do a bit of a research...This isnt $199 we are talking about but serious cash for the average buyer...Besides all one has to do is take a step to the side and look at the game selection...Last time I checked the ps3 section only had one wall space for new and used while the 360 easily has 4...Hell the Wii is outnumbering the ps3 in games right now...
Zzz..oltan! 07-09-07, 11:06 PM Both are excellent values. I am actually thankful for all the differentiating features because I am getting even more by owning them both. Same goes for my Wii...
Having one of them plus an HD set makes you a winner already, really...
(Complaining about the PS3 not having good games becomes a moot point by the end of this year.)
bigjohn955 07-09-07, 11:12 PM Sony had to drop the price to compete... Microsoft will follow suit soon. However, it may not be till they roll out the 65nm chips, those would reduce cost, and fix most of the heat issues with the system.
dpe8598 07-09-07, 11:49 PM To the OP. Value is all in the mind of the buyer. For some, bluray adds tremendous value. For others, it doesnt matter at all. For some, all that matter is halo, finaly fantasy, gran turismo, etc. It all depends on what you want out of a system. Educate yourself and choose accordingly.
I paid $200 for my 360 Premium when I got it from Micro Center last year. Two $100 rebates.
Now THAT's a better value than any other console.
Sure, you gotta look around and maybe wait a little, but there are killer deals on 360s to be had.

The PS3 is a better value IF you want a high def dvd player and wi-fi. If you want a larger library, right now the 360 is a better deal. Will you want the Sony exclusives? Then the PS3 is a better deal. From just a hardware perspective, then yeah, the PS3 is a better deal. But only you can decide which is a better deal from a game perspective.
Rakesh.S 07-10-07, 12:46 AM if i owned an elite and it dropped to 399, i'd be pissed, to say the least.
jagouar 07-10-07, 01:20 AM you gotta give ms a chance to respond to this (and i think they will) but right now the ps3 is a better value.
An interesting thread...I'm glad you all can discuss this without cussing...
To me, games matter most. If time were frozen, the PS3 of today would not be a good value. This being said, time passes and the end of this year is going to bring quite a few AAA titles to the PS3.
So, people will tell you:
1) Just look at RIGHT NOW and you'll see the 360 is a better gaming system.
2) PS3 is a lot more than a gaming system and the gap in terms of games will be closed soon enough.
You have to decide if RIGHT NOW is all you need to take into account.
dpe8598 07-10-07, 01:57 AM Ultimately, I gotta think most people that frequent this board can't live w/out both systems. I know I can't. THere are just too many cool games coming out on both systems. In a perfect world I could play all those games on my PS360, but that will never happen.
johnsmith808 07-10-07, 01:58 AM As far as strictly from a hardware cost, the ps3 is probably worth far more than the 360. Compare a bluray drive to a standard dvd drive, cpu and video card that's 1 year newer, and just overall better build quality. If you are concerned with games at this very moment, then of course the 360 is far better. But if you're willing to be patient until this fall and winter, the ps3 will not disappoint in the games department.
As far as average joe's picking up one of these systems, I think the HD movie side of it cannot be minimized. Even if a person buys a ps3 today, yet doesn't have an hdtv, it's probably only a matter of time before he does get one. Just knowing you have this box sitting in your living room that can produce an amazing hd gaming and movie experience is enough to convince even the budget conscious to get out there and finally buy that hdtv, which have plummeted in price.
Are average joe's without hdtv's really buying 360's and ps3's that often, anyway?
vanilla rice 07-10-07, 02:04 AM i think the PS3's price now is very fair, and i'm quite tempted to get it - i even have 5 BR discs from when amazon had its sale, just sitting on the shelf. the only reason i'm holding back at the moment is, A) no rumble on the controllers yet - and sidebar, i like 360 controllers way better, and i hope they make a 3rd party one for the PS3, and B) very few good exclusive games IMO.
so A+B, coupled with a possible 2nd price drop before christmas, makes me hesitant to get one at the moment.
No denying it; $499 for the 60GB PS3 is a pretty tempting value, and certainly brings the platform closer to in line with mass acceptance. (I'm starting to think ... hmmm ... can I make room for this in my home theater?)
On the other hand, a rumored $350 price point for the Premium won't be too shabby, either.

Wait, Xbox + 360 > PS1+PS2+PS3 in # of games? That is some funny math.

I have a PS2. I haven't touched it since I got my 360. In fact, the PS2 looks so horrible on my HDTV that I haven't really touched it since I bought the HDTV. When I bought the PS2, I was all excited about the PS1 back catalog, too, but in the end I rarely played any PS1 games on it.
If you buy a new, expensive game console, you generally want to play new games on it.
