View Full Version : All gamers. LCD or Plasma? Looking for best picture for gaming.
conan48 07-10-07, 02:34 PM I currently have a 50" Panny Plasma and the picture is mostly great. I've been getting the upgrade bug and thinking of getting maybe a new 1080p LCD or 8g Pio Plasma. Im a hardcore gamer and haven't had any issues with IR or Burn IN on my Panny so thats not really a concern.
My main requirement is picture quality. What will give me a better picture for gaming a Plasma or LCD. Will 1080p really matter when most games are being output at 720p anyway? Im really looking for gamers opinions who have tried both types of TVs and can give me the pros and cons of each for gaming.
8g Pio Plasma all the way. All games will output at 720p, even those made at 1080p. The contrast, color and movement on plasma is all better. You probably know that already. :)
If you have room get a 61" - 73" dlp.
Thrillhouse17 07-10-07, 04:36 PM Plasma over LCD hands down. LCDs don't create the blacks that plasma does, and blur much more than plasmas.
I'm ready to go HD (1080p) myself.
I pretty much ruled out plasma because of burn-in. From what I read (and was told at BB and CC) plasma isn't good for hardcore gamers.
Has that changed?
Do you have any recommendations for a 50+ inch 1080p plasma?
jdmvette 07-10-07, 05:28 PM my 70" SXRD is gaming bliss. :)
benjamin-benjami 07-10-07, 06:18 PM my 70" SXRD is gaming bliss. :)
you are right i have a 60" sxrd.....
lcd is best for gaming (not saying best overall)
Plasma has problems with burn in and gets dull
DLP has had chronic problems with lag.....
Panasonic 42" plasma here, game for many hours straight, no problems, image retention minimum, a rear projection tv gets dull after two years-$200 to replace bulb, plasma lose half their brightness in 60,000 hrs=More than 20 years if you watch tv 8 hrs a day.
electronleaker 07-10-07, 08:13 PM LCD!!!! Plasma's are nice but they "burn-in" the picture if it's a static image. Do you really want to see the background of Halo overlapping your favorite tv show???
I've had mixed results with plasma.
I had a 42" Panasonic EDTV that was my gaming rig for 2 1/2 years and I had no burn-in or image retention problems whatsoever with that set. Beautiful picture too, even though it was only EDTV.
I recently picked up a Samsung 5054 720p plasma and the thing had horrible image retention; any moderately bright logo that stayed on screen for more than a few minutes would remain and I had to use the TV's scroll wipe tool to clean it out. Others have said that the TV stabilizes after about 200 hours of break-in but I never got to a sufficient comfort level with it and returned it after a couple of weeks.
After my experience with the Samsung, I decided to go with a 52" Sony XBR2 LCD. Great picture, very good black levels, no ghosting or blurring, and best of all not a hint of IR. Lots of hi-def inputs too: 3 HDMI, 2 component and 1 VGA, all of which support 1080p (yes, even the components).
dssturbo1 07-10-07, 08:30 PM the new 8g 1080p pioneer 50" and 60"plamsas out in late aug/sept should make an excellent gaming display with the new deeper blacks and higher contrast. msrp $5k for the 5010, $6.5k for the 6010 with the elite versions another $1000 more.
TRALFAZ 07-10-07, 08:59 PM I have them all except a DLP and I prefer the SXRD or my Sony CRT over either of my LCDs or my plasma for gaming. If you must have a flat panel (SXRDs are not that deep :D ) I like the plasma better for the blacks and colors. My plasma has pixel shift and a feature that erases screen retention, never had any permanent "burn in".
Savageone79 07-10-07, 09:39 PM Plamsas are best overall as long as you don't plan to pause the game leave the TV on and come back a day later.
I have never heard of a Plasma suffering from "dullness"?
if anything LCD's often lack the pop of a plasma. Blacks and colors are much better on plasma than LCD or DLP.
If you mix up what your playing and don't leave the tv on when your not there burn is is not an issue. I haven't had burn in on my 5 year old sony plasma or my 2 year old pioneer plasma both have had many hours of gaming and look much better than my friends LCD's!
AndrewS99 07-10-07, 09:44 PM Check out the Samsung LCD line.
LN-T4665F has plenty of pop and fantastic blacks. No burn in problems, lighter less heat and better than plasma if you have lots of ambient light in your environment. Looks great with my 360. No blur issues...

Why in the world would you use one of those people as a key source of information?
You need to head on over the to plasma forums frien.

A good thing to note is that your Xbxo360 has an auto dimmer that will kick-on after a few minutes, so you should realistically be able to leave your 360 on pause for days and nothing should happen. :)

This is one odd post.
You rule out plasma due to burn-in concerns (welcome to 1999) and BB and CC employee comments. Now you want recommendations for a plasma?
mr stroke 07-11-07, 12:48 PM I don't know how you guys game on your plasma's??? my Pioneer is VERY sensitive to any static images, even 5 minuntes of espn takes 2 minutes to go away...and my Panny plasma is alot better but still has IR(HD DVD or BR sign logo will stay on screen for 20-30 seconds) I couldn't imagine playing Halo, Madden, or downloading anything on marketplace for hours on end and not getting any burn in

Burn-in is permanent... 20-30 second image retention is not. They are not the same thing and shouldn't be confused or used as a reason to not buy a plasma because it is mostly hearsay.
I don't notice any image retention on my 58" plasma and I'm not concerned at all about burn-in.

Don't be so paranoid. My buddy and I played GHII for almost 9 hours straight on my 50" Panny plasma. Sure there was a bit of IR the next morning, but was gone with a few hours of DiscoveryHD!
Jason R 07-13-07, 04:10 AM LCD all the way. 1080p plasmas are too much $$$ and can burn-in.
HailTheHD 07-13-07, 12:50 PM Plasma's have without a doubt better picture quality. But I go for an LCD since you have zero worry about burn-in. I find that the burn-in is just to much to worry about. Actually you got to worry about the tv 10 ten times more then the game, like make sure your health counter ain't in that corner for too long at a time etc.
WantABigScreen 07-13-07, 01:20 PM You should find some friends/family that you know already have them and compair them yourself. You're going to get mixed reviews.
Personally, I have a 50' pio plasma and LOVE IT!!!
