I've seen this before, but always good to see. Compression sucks.

It wouldn've been better had he not resorted to a hypothetical example.

Jeepers:
Dish/cable providers sending out HD-Lite.
All the rich dynamics of music squished for iPod and mp3 downloads.

Screw high end A/V - I'm tried of spending major coin for playback equipment, only to watch down-rezzed blocky video and listen to screechy ear-bleeding noise.

It wouldn've been better had he not resorted to a hypothetical example. This has been discussed before and I had pointed to a link that had a story about several recordings made over many years by the band "Rush". It showed examples of how "loundness" was applied more and more for the later recordings. If anyone is interested I will take the trouble to try to find that link.

I'd appreciate that ekb. I'm not questioning the whole compression thing, but was looking forward to hearing a non-synthesized version. Do your examples provide audible comparisons of the same song possibly re-released along with graphs?

This is a hot topic on a lot of pro audio boards. If you google a bit, you can probably find some CDs in your collection (if you've got any 'remastered' discs plus the originals) which people are complaining about. The remastered Beatles' tracks on "1" come up a lot, for example.

I started to look for the article with the Rush example but didn't find it yet. The example is just a signal vs time plot - not audio. But I did come across an old link : http://www.itwriting.com/blog/?p=91 There are further links at the end of the blog. One is to "Loudness wars" on wikipedia. They have examples.
