View Full Version : I made the 360 jump
Ergoguy34 07-10-07, 08:42 PM And I hope it was the right one, I plan to get a PSIII later this year when I upgrade my TV which will be used for the blu-ray player. I have been playing rainbox six vegas and its a good game with fair graphics, any other gaming suggestions out there? Thanks
beezdeez 07-10-07, 08:56 PM Depends on what kind of games you like. There are tons of games coming in the future that seem like must haves. Right now my must haves are:
Gears of War
Oblivion
Dead Rising
Forza 2
and...
Lost Planet
GRAW2
Dirt

Welcome to 2005. Just joking. Check out Call of Juarez. Its a sleeper hit that has a nice call of duty 2 feel. I'm really enjoying it right now.
LENNY 2112 07-10-07, 10:05 PM Great time to get the 360, lots of awesome games coming out the last half of this year.
Give the following a check:
Oblivion
GRAW 1 and 2
COD 2 and 3
Oblivion: May want to wait a couple of months and get the game of the year edition which will include the expnansion packs and downloads.
Gears of War: System seller - when friends come over a must game to show (great-excellent game to play as well, and is currently #1 online gameplay
Guitar Hero II: extremely fun, a blast with friends, great music and interface
Forza 2/ PGR3 - great racing games, PGR3 will be cheap to get, Forza is the latest and greatest
CoD2 (CoD3) - launch game, great story and great game
Kameo: Launch game (cheap) actually a fun game, decent story, and graphics are very good
Lego Star Wars 2: again cheap now, actually very fun, especially if you have kids
Any Sport game that you like (Madden = football, 2k sports for hockey, basketball, I'm not sure which baseball game, table tennis is actually quite fun, fight night again cheap and pretty good)
I have not played Graw 1/2 R6V though they are popular as well, but it ets repetitive with multiple shooters. R6V and GoW are probably the 2 most popular/played on line shooters currently.
football76 07-10-07, 10:52 PM DiRT :)
-Great time to get into the 360 madness, just look at the "coming soon" games this year!
fjtorres 07-10-07, 11:16 PM Step one: go online and download all the XBOX LIVE Arcade demos.
(Recommended: UNO, Catan, Carcassonne, Geometry Wars, Bejeweled2, Cloning Clyde, Aegis Wing, PacMan CE, 3D ultra Minigolf, Astropop, Hexic you already have, Roboblitz, and any retro game you're familiar with)
Step two: check out the game trailers.
Step three: download the playable demos of any games that catch your eye.
Specific retail games to consider:
Oblivion (as great as it is, you might want to wait for the GOTY edition due Sept 4; its a bargain!).
Gears of War.
Crackdown
Overlord
Marvel Alliance
Guitar Hero II (III due for XMAS)
Rainbow Six: Vegas
Viva Pinata
Forza 2
Test Drive Unlimited
Project Gotham 3 (4 is due by XMAS)
Dead Rising
Saints Row
Lost Planet
Dead or Alive 4
Top Spin 2
Splinter Cell: Double Agent (Conviction due... you got it; XMAS. Start saving!)
And speaking of due games, Sept will be hell: Mass Effect early and Halo 3 late in the month. And, if you like sandbox gangster games, GTA IV in october.
Sorry to tell you, but you're 18 months behind the curve. ;-)
Good luck.
Now get cracking!
Oh, watch for the reports coming out of E3 this week; there's new fun headed our way.
And, finally, don't forget the downloadable movies and TV shows on the Video Marketplace.
jelliott25 07-10-07, 11:21 PM I'm hoping for good news on the pricing front from the E3 press conference in 10 minutes. If there's a good price drop...I'm in as a first time Xbox owner as well.
Good thread...thanks to the OP and all who have responded.
ratpacker 07-10-07, 11:23 PM If you didn't own an original xbox, Halo and Halo 2 are great games you can get cheap and will get you ready for H3. Also get Gears, learn it, and play on line with the guys in the GoW multiplayer thread. You'll be glad you did.
Nics1246 07-11-07, 01:16 AM Hope you enjoy the Xbox 360 as much as I do! I'll get a PS3 for Blu Ray later this year during the Holidays. But for gaming, its all about the 360.

Sorry, looks like Microsoft didn't announce any price cuts. To be honest based on their E3 conference I just watched they don't need it. I think exclusive titles like Bioshock, Mass Effect, and Halo 3 will sell systems alone. Plus if you like football it is the only way to get 60fps on Madden and APF 2k8!

I was thinking the same thing as I was watching it. With this lineup, why would they price drop? I held out until the end anyway but finally went to sleep disappointed.
Looks like I'm still on the fence for a while yet.

To be honest, I see a lot of used 360s going for really cheap on ebay and craigslist. I guess people are going for a PS3 after their price cut, so why not capitalize on their misfortunate/stupidity? :D
RAVEN56706 07-11-07, 09:55 AM i cant believe xbox will do 60fps...
jason10mm 07-11-07, 10:09 AM I think a price drop is coming, but they will wait till after the Halo3 and GTA4 sales come through. I bet a mid november drop just before black friday. I think they NEED a drop. All those Wii sales should be 360 sales. WTF is on the Wii? The core 360 should be $200 after 2 years on the market, they should WANT to dump those older tech consoles and no better way than to slash the price and clear the warehouses. If I was MS I would combo a 360 premium + HD-DVD player at the PS3 $500 price. Throw in that stupid $100 wireless dongle as well.
Come on MS! Take off the gloves, coat your fists in glue, and roll them in the broken glass!

There's always been a lot of 360s for re-sale. They're usually refurbs from a ring of death trade in or, lately, Live-banned modded consoles people are trying to unload. Buyer beware getting a second hand 360 from eBay or craigslist.
HeadRusch 07-11-07, 10:18 AM Unless Microsoft suddenly starts getting MARIO and YOSHI and DIDDY games that you can play while waving a wand around, a $100 Xbox 360 still wouldn't steal sales away from the Wii, its a fundementally different kind of machine aimed at a very different audience.
PS: to the OP, the first thing you want to do with your new 360 is to go on the live marketplace and download every game demo that is available, this will let you check out many of the games currently in release for the 360. The list of "must buy" titles will be lengthy....there aren't too many stinkers in the 360 stable so far.
fjtorres 07-11-07, 11:01 AM i cant believe xbox will do 60fps...
Believe it.
Rock-solid 60fps. Quite a few games do it already.
Turns out that dedicated graphics memory chip is a *monster* of an asset.
scotty144 07-11-07, 11:10 AM I would pick up a cheap copy of Halo 2...still lots of folks playing and lots of fun...plus it will get you ready for Halo 3.

Are these backwards-compatible and work on the Xbox360?
Are there any problems with the backwards-compatible games, such as choppiness and framerate issues, or do they look and play "just as good" on the 360 as they did on a regular xbox?
scotty144 07-11-07, 01:56 PM Yes, pretty sure most of those titles are backwards compatible. Here is the current list
http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/backwardcompatibilitygameslist.htm
I can only speak for Halo 2 and it looks much better on the 360 than it ever looked on the Xbox.

HeadRusch 07-11-07, 02:05 PM There can be performance issues with B/C, yes.
Some games show it bad, some don't at all.
The need for speed underground 2 game has a graphical upgrade with upscaling and AA turned on, but the game definately runs at a slower framerate than it does at 480p on a standard xbox.
Of course I dont know whos still playing that game anymore...but still.
briankmonkey 07-11-07, 02:10 PM GRAW2 and Lost Planet :D

I would take extra care with getting a used 360 now, especially since Microsoft has banned all modified consoles, it could be those that are flooding the used sites to unload there banned systems.
If you do decide to go the used route, be sure the seller is rated very highly, and offers a exchange/return option.

Yea but I still think they (Microsoft) should cut the price. First off, I only have a 360 so I'm no Sony fanboy. The truth of the matter is that if they want to compete with Sony and make sure that the PS3 will always be a "non-factor" than they better cut the prices on their consoles. Think about it, for $20.00 more right now, you can have a PS3 that has a Blu Ray player. I been wanting to get a Blu Ray player to go along with my HD-DVD player and this might push things a bit tighter if you don't already have the 360. In other words to J6P, the PS3 might sound like the better deal instead of the 360 right now.
chad473 07-11-07, 03:18 PM I'm a bit surprised they didn't announce one. I'll be really surprised if we don't see one around the holidays. Maybe they will wait until after the halo3 frenzy.

Give me a break man
Xbox 360 can always be found pretty cheap even before Sony announced their price cut. How do I know? I had to sell one of my Xbox 360 due to being unemplyed (but will not sell my last one) and I had to research what the "going" price was. I also been looking into buying a PS3 and I see many selling their used ones for very reasonable prices also, does that mean that they want to exchange it for a 360? Its obvious that Sony is desperate at this point. Frankly, I would be two if I sold a $500 machine with no good game titles to go with :p
EnderOSC 07-11-07, 04:16 PM Viva Piniata: I know it might surprise you, but if you like any of the Sim franchise, you'll probably like this. I played the hell out of it when I bought it for about 2 weeks, but haven't really picked it back up.
NBA Street Homecourt: A good NBA Jam type sports game. I am horrible at it, but it is fun and has awesome graphics.
Gears of War: I like this game alot. The co-op is wonderful, and MP is fun. MP got old for me after a few months.
Rainbow 6 Vegas: You already have this, play it online esp with the new DLC. It's fun.
Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2: I don't own this, but I wish I did. I have played it and loved it, but have been stingy about buying games since so many are coming out this fall. There's demos on the market place if you want to test it out.
DiRT: Great racer, I don't own it but wish I did. There's a demo to check out too.
PGR3: Another great racer. I love the PGR series, more-so than the racing sims. If you like the sims I recommend Forza 2.
Guitar Hero 2: A classic if you want an interactive game. I love it.
Oblivion: A good RPG, especially if you love side-quests and expansions. This game will suck a ton of time from you... watch out for becoming a vampire.
Hope this helps. I have REALLY high standards to buy games and this is pretty much what I own or used to own. I also play H2 more than any other game, simply because I love Halo... can't wait for September-25.
Slordak 07-11-07, 04:21 PM I love when people just sort of stumble in and ask "Are there any good games out?"
Egads people, there are dozens and dozens of them, and not just the recently released titles, either. It isn't like the PS3, where if you don't like Motorstorm and Resistance: Fall of Man, you're basically out of luck.

That really isn't accurate at all.

Yah they've got RB6 and Oblivion as well now.
briankmonkey 07-11-07, 05:04 PM Yah they've got RB6 and Oblivion as well now.
That's a start. Go to IGN or gamespot as they should have all or most of the games listed for the PS3, 360, etc.

Of course there are more games but I think those 4 are the must haves for PS3 as of right now. Though I own Motorstorm and never play it. :(
Mindwarper 07-11-07, 05:32 PM I'm sure of all of them are bc. They all look much better then on the xbox. I haven't run into any problems with bc. I like it a lot. They seem to play the same and look much better. I'm still hoping for serious sam 2 and ssx on tour to make the list. Playing doom3 on two separate screens with friendly fire on, can be very challenging and a blast. The constrained space makes firing difficult, but you learn to work together. I found mtx mototrax for 3.99$ new. Bc is a cheap way to add some good games.
