Hello, I have an Oppo 981HD hooked into an Onkyo 674 via HDMI assigned to the DVD input on the receiver.

I noticed that when playing SACDs in stereo I am seeing my receiver display 88khz instead of 178khz which is what it displays when I play the same disc in my PS3. I tried this with a John Coltrane/Thelonious Monk disk and an Allman Brothers disc. On the 981HD I have it set to prefer stereo over multichannel, and I have tried switching between RAW and LPCM outputs. Any ideas?

thanks

this is according to spec. Oppo outputs SACD as 88khz PCM, and the PS3 outputs as 176.4khz

Are you sure that's the case, in the manual on page 42, under section 8 it says:

"For high resolution stereo or multichannel audio contents such as DVD-Audio and Super Audio CD, the DVD player will send multi-channel PCM signals with the highest available sample frequency and bit numbers. Depending on the original audio content, the format could be 44.1kHz - 192kHz, 2- 6 channels."

Also, I just tried the new Rush DVD. The hirese stereo track plays at 48khz, but if I play it on my PS3 it plays at 96khz.

Those are PCM sampling rates for DVD-A. The Oppo converts DSD to PCM at a fixed 88khz sampling rate, which is what you see on your set up.

Thanks, am I missing this in the manual somewhere? Also what does it do with hires stereo PCM? For example the new Rush disc has a 96khz stereo track, it is playing it at 48khz.

thanks

You have to set the picture resolution to 720p or 1080i to get the highest resolution for audio as well, via HDMI.

Thanks, I had it at 720, also then went ahead and changed it to 1080i. I also get 96khz from DVD-Audio disks. So that setting appears to be fine.

don't you have to set your oppo to multi-channel instead of stereo?

Yes, but the latest FW update should automatically set that when an SACD is being played.

So I was told.

The DVD [standard] forum has ton of info on this player regarding set up options.
