View Full Version : RS1 thoughts so far
Buttabean 07-11-07, 01:13 AM So I finally got the RS1 and had to try it out. (tomorrow gets lugged up on the ceiling) Here's my thoughts so far after about 4 hours. First switched through a few channel of Standard Def content and I have to say boy does this look alot blurrier then my Marantz vp8600; you guys weren't kidding when SD looked bad on this unit. After about 10 seconds I had to switch to some HD channels. I have to say they looked pretty good not incredible. They did have more depth and were more enjoyable then the vp8600. Soon after about a couple of hours I tossed in Casino Royale on BlueRay. Watched about 40 minutes then switched to Ice Age: The Meltdown and watched the short film. Haven't had a chance to test out any HD-DVD yet. I have to say so far with high quality content i'm really impressed with the picture it can throw.
So far standard def looks like something I stepped in and cant get off my shoe. HD channels look better then I was expected from other comments from users. Blueray so far looks superb and can't wait to test out some HD-DVD titles!
I didn't notice any off convergence on the test patterns that it comes with. I'll have to burn a dvd or possible buy a calibration blueray or hddvd disc. Also didn't notice any bright corners or yellow spots/streaks. Could I have possible gotten a perfect projector? :)
Other notes so far is that it lights up the 135" screen no problem on low brightness so far and I also didn't hear it at all. I also have a window A/C near my equipment cabinet which the RS1 was sitting on top of so that could have flooded out the RS1.
Few negatives ive noticed so far...
The component input with the 360 hooked up makes the colors look very dull out of the box (Haven't had anytime to adjust them yet)
Green: Oh god sometimes it looks fine then all of a sudden you get neon cups and crazy stuff that just doesn't look right at all. Doesn't seem to happen all the time though but man does it stand out when it shows.
I'm not sure if i'm getting 1080p24 or i'm getting 60hz. Anyway of finding out through the RS1 or PS3? The PS3 is set to auto.
I'm loving it so far. Same with everyone that has seen it. I'm sure i'm leaving alot out but i'm exausted right now so i'll have add on when I have a chance.
Equipment i'm using:
Receiver Yamaha rsv-x 4600
Screen: Stewart model A 130 135" actually defective at the time waiting on the new one to come :(
PS3 BlueRay
Toshiba A2 HD-DVD
Is that Marantz 720?
The first thing I noticed with standard DVD was how bad they could look. They appear more detailed but at the same time you see all the flaws you havent seen before.... I think its the 1080p doing this.
For test patterns to check convergence, simply enter right, left, up, down, and enter. You will be in the service menu. Even easier is when in the menu on a Sony Blu ray movie, enter 7669 and there will be test patterns you can also use.
Buttabean 07-11-07, 09:29 AM Oh great ill have to give that a try later! Thanks
EDIT: Yes it's 720p, thats what I was thinking aswell.
Ian_Currie 07-11-07, 11:08 AM The service menu will also tell you if you're displaying at 24 or 60 ...

That's pretty disappointing.
Standard def is still important to me, and my HD DVD player is an Xbox 360.
Be sure to post back once you get the component settings adjusted, and tell us if there is any significant improvement.

Believe it is up,down, right, left, enter on the remote and you have to enter it very quickly.
JonStatt 07-11-07, 11:37 AM Hmm..thats strange. My Xbox 360 is connected via component to the RS1/HD1 and the colours look just the same with HD-DVD and games as HDMI sources.
Any opinions if the upcoming Lumagen Radiance would improve the SD on this projector or if possible using hdmi output from source component for SD?

Buttabean 07-12-07, 09:43 AM I didn't have a chance to hang the RS1 yesterday since I was having car issues. Battery isn't holding a charge anymore.
I did however check the convergence quick and notice on the far left side it's off by 1 red pixel and on the right side same but other direction. I'll have to wait till friday to install it then completely tweak it.
I check the service menu to see if the ps3 was running 24hz which it was. I switched it off and on to see if i could see a difference, which was hard to tell since it seems to blur fast motion. I did notice a difference in slow moving pans. Comparing the panning of my last dlp and this id say theres an improvement. My brother mentioned he wasn't getting disoriented or bothering him while playing any games(easier on the eyes) but I haven't tried Gears Of War yet. I know that game anyone watching it before would really bother their eyes. The color issue I mentioned before I think it was a track in forza 2 thats really dull and cloudy. My brother picked a track we didn't play yet so i'll blame it on him :). Still something doesn't look right to me with the 360 maybe turning up the sharpness would fix that?
JonStatt what size screen are you using? I'm wondering if my size screen running through components is picking up the differences with hdmi and component (1080i vs 1080p and component vs hdmi sharpness).
I also left this out of my first post because I was to tired to remember that you guys don't know this :). My old projector was on a dalite 119" 1.3 gain so the screen size could also play a role in the standard definition content. I'm personally contemplating buying a cheap plasma or lcd to place in the same room behind the screen or other wall just for regular tv. They've come down so much in price It's hard for me justify running the projector for 5 hours a day if its going to look bad :p.
Side note I ordered a dvdO vp50 external video processor from frys which are out of stock. Hopefully I'll get that soon and happily report in my finding with that monster and SD improvement. Overall so far i'm very happy considering the size screen I have and the way its setup at the moment :).
CCDAstro 07-12-07, 09:51 AM Glad you like your RS1! Got mine Tuesday and it bricked after a day of use! Going back today for a new one. Thank God they are now an in stock item or I would be getting something else instead.
I keep wondering if there was something about my system that fried it but I can't see how since I have been using a Sammy DLP with the same system for a month with absolutely zero issues.
Has anyone else seen a blink on - blink off - posterized color - and then totally dead with a new RS1?
goondog 07-12-07, 11:08 AM Buttabean.
whats your throw distance and seating arrangment for that 135" screen.
Also is that wide or diag?
Thanks.
Buttabean 07-12-07, 11:34 AM It's 135" diagonal and at the moment I have it set back 19' and off to the right on its full offset. When its installed properly I'll have it at 14.5' back with no offset. So far put 11hrs on it.
CCDAstro that really sucks. Id be really pissed off if mine dies that quick!
I'll see about taking some screen shots possibly Friday. My uncle is bringing over his new HD camcorder this weekend so maybe i'll post some video if it comes out ok.

Well, of course I am not a happy camper. OTOH, I have only been waiting a few months, not since November like some folks and I do have the Sammy to put back up so still have a PJ, albeit not an RS1.
AVS has been great however and is sending me a replacement today.

At this moment I am using a comparatively small screen size of 80". Although it is a smaller screen, I can still clearly see the difference between HDMI and component in terms of addtional clarify/sharpness. But what I don't see are dull colours from the Xbox 360. I run my HD1 with colour at -8.
I am still thinking whether I should be considering an Xbox 360 elite when they come out in Europe to get that slightly better picture over HDMI.
As for your convergence observations I am not sure I follow. Are you saying it is not linear across the screen? In which case you will have to choose the best compromise as you won't be able to eliminate it.
Per Johnny 07-12-07, 04:27 PM What connection did you use for SD? Is it 4x3 or 16x9 enhanced?
What I have found out is that the composite and s-video input is really bad, and gave at best a medicore SD-picture.
I then connected my digital SD-tuner through the RGB input, and the result was very pleasing. Depth, colors and details was suddenly all there, and know I really enjoys watching SD from thoose channels that have a high-quality transmission.

not sure if you saw this. I'm hoping this actually comes out and improved pq.

I have a cablebox with hdmi out so i've been using that. I'll have to play with the resolution it spits out for SD content. Maybe that will help.
