I apologize if this has been posted, I checked the first 3 pages, but I admit I do not browse this area enough.

I found this extremely interesting. Konami appears to be entertaining the prospect of expanding MGS to other platforms to recoup development costs. I guess this could be very good news for 360 owners if it materializes. Konami says the PS3 price cuts aren't helping pull in enough people and development costs may force their hand.

"Since Metal Gear Solid was born for the PlayStation, we would like to keep it a PlayStation game. But we might have to take some steps," Kitaue said.

Are you joking? This has been discussed to death. For the last week everyone thought it would go to the 360 because of this quote. Then today at Sony's press conference they said it was a Sony exclusive.

Yup, the speculation is over.

Sony has been getting a bad rep for "saying things." I even heard a rumor Sony was essentially paying developers to only really talk about their games on PS3- basically to get people to assume they are PS3 exclusive. I doubt this, essentially bribery, is really going on. But similar activities to a lesser degree wouldn't suprise me (from any company). Fact is, Sony has lost a lot of exclusive titles, no reason the trend is going to suddenly end.

EDIT: I don't know anything about MGS specifically, I mean more in general.

Why. wont. this. rumor. die!!!!

That being said it wouldnt suprise me (nor interest me) if it came to the 360 in a year or so like one of the other ones. I think pretty much all 3rd parties will be cross platform unless Sony or MS pay for it to be exclusive.

What about this??

A cute little email hit our inbox from Konami in regards to their press briefing taking place this evening, and should be interesting. Here's the poem:

"What better way
to end your day
at Konami's media briefing collecting...
News for a major announcement
you were not expecting."

Curiouser and curiouser, upon being confronted with this new information, our intrepid lead gave his best raised eyebrow akin to a well renowned Vulcan. The sign in for the briefing is in just over an hour, and we'll be there to bring you this unexpected announcement. Until then, rampant speculation ... GO!

I was surprised MGS4 was not announced for 360 yet.

I also watched the Sony press conference, and it did indeed appear that MGS4 is exclusive to PS3. HOWEVER, IIRC, there seemed to be a little bit of a tight rope walk going on there.

They never said "MGS4 is only possible on PS3". They never said "Without the power of Cell and Blu-Ray this game is not possible". They never said you will only be able to play this game on PS3. All they did say was that "MGS4 is exclusive to PS3", which is true - as of now.

I might be crazy, but I think MS still has a small chance of catching this one.

I think there is a lot of behind the scenes stuff going on here.

After all, MS was pretty convincing with their 3rd party software sales numbers compared to the other consoles. Why wouldn't MGS4 come to 360?

And after all that I believe recent news was that Konami was mulling over the possibility of bringing this game to other consoles - it's just not a done deal yet.

The example I hear most frequently of Sony pretending to have exclusive titles was Assassin's Creed- now I dunno because I never followed the game closely but I have been told that originally for a while after announcement it was only ever discussed in terms of PS3, they never used words that confirmed it, exactly like you describe, and sure enough in the long run it's the PS3 that is delaying the game for everyone! lol

If them saying it is exclusive to PS3 isn't enough for you, I don't know what is. It wouldnt surprise me if it came out in a year or two on the 360, but that isn't that unusual Past MGS games did that and past exclusive games did that. At least the rumors can finally die that this isnt exclusive to the PS3.

There is a difference in committment in the different approaches, "PS3 Exclusive" is not the same as "Only possible with the BluRay." One statement says, if you have a PS3 you should preorder MGS4, the other says, go get a PS3 so you can get MGS4. I'm not arguing the game will be on 360 (whether right away or later), rather I think a simple "PS3 exclusive" would not be hard to take away. I mean hell wasn't it TODAY Sony said PS3 price-cuts were a rumor, and then recanted hours later?

Exclusive is a pretty relative term these days. Resident Evil 4 was first claimed as a Gamecube exclusive. But then it appeared on PS2. GTA Liberty City Stories was a PSP exclusive. But then it found its way to the PS2. Lumines was a PSP exclusive, but where did it end up? XBLA and PS2 both saw remixed versions. For a long time, Sonic was a Sega exclusive. But after their withdrawal from the console business, focusing solely on software, Sonic all of a sudden appeared on the same console as his rival Mario.

Wow, OK. I understand that sometimes companies dodge questions and even ******** (as in Sony not wanting to discuss the pricecut yet), but when you hold a press conference and announce that something is exclusive...... come on guys, what else do you want. I'm out of this conversation, if you weren't convinced by an announcement, I'm not gonna try to, nor do I wnat to.

Again, today, Sony did not "dodge questions" about price cuts, they announced it was a rumor. Where are the usual internet commies, I like to trust people- but let's be honest, when it comes down to it for any company it's about making money. Sure within reason, but they have little to lose from saying it's exclusive and then giving it a wider release.

Yep, doesn't look like this game is coming to 360 anytime too soon.

Because MGS4 is already behind schedule (and very likely over budget). I guess porting it to 360 for the same launch window as PS3 would just mean even more delays. The longer they delay the game the less sales it will get (they have been hyping the game for quite a while now and you better strike while the iron is hot).

Anyway, if the game does well on PS3 I can't imagine it not coming to 360 eventually. That would just be leaving money on the table for no good reason.

"Exclusive" has been used many times in the past to mean "timed exclusive." I'd still be surprised to see this on 360 within a year of the PS3 version, if ever.

if it does come out, itll be a year later like mgs 2 was, and by then theyll be a ton of new content for 360 and will pretty much be old news at that point.

I feel like MGS4 will make the cross over to the 360 in time, a year, maybe more, but Konami is a business that wants money, and they know that by porting it over to the 360, they will reach a bigger fan base.

I still feel like this will probably be a 6 month exclusive. It will hit the PS3 in March, and then hit the 360 6 months later in late September. The only way I don't see this happening, is if Sony drops their price another $100 before the release of GTA IV, and their holiday sales are such that Konami can live with it being on only one platform.

I'm sure that MGS4 will make a good profit on PS3. However, there is no such thing as making 'enough' profit. If the game sells well on PS3, it would most likely sell well on 360 as well. Konami is a public company and profits rule.

Now if it turns out to be a total flop then they may cut their losses and not bother to port it at all.

Well, if the game is late and over budget, and it's certainly very, very late, then it will probably see the light of day on 360 at some point, and I'll go out on a limb and say some time in '08. Looking at the sales numbers for the PS3 since launch, even if they triple their install base between now and the end of the year (I only think it will double to 2.8 million units in the U.S.), to 4.2 million consoles in the U.S., then they'll still only have about half the install base of the 360 in the U.S., assuming that the 360 sales at least equal PS3 sales for the same period. Konami isn't going to leave a user base of over 8 million people in the U.S. without a chance to buy MGS4 and help offset the huge development costs. So there's a simple math arguement for why MGS4 will appear on the 360. Of course, Sony could offest that math arguement with one of their own....
