Will there ever be a box that can receive an HDMI source and output the audio via analog? I've done some searching and I can't seem to find one. Is it even possible? It would be a useful thing for those of us with older receivers that do not accept HDMI inputs but do have analog inputs.

Then you'd simply use the source's analog outputs. Or its optical/coax outputs.
What would be the advantage of converting the HDMI output to analog?

Well, from what I understand, the uncompressed 7.1 signal can only be carried by hdmi. So if you take the ps3 for example, it only outputs 5.1 via optical, if you want to get 7.1 sound you have to have a receiver that has hdmi inputs. I've heard some blu-ray players have analog outs, but the ps3 doesn't. So I was thinking it would be useful if there was an inexpensive device that could take a hdmi 7.1 sound signal and split it up into 7.1 analog. But I don't know anything about any of this and was wondering if anyone had any thoughts.
