View Full Version : 1031Q sudden power up problem

My 1031Q which I had powered up many times before and had no problems. Mysteriously would not power up today, I get nothing. No pops, no hum, no noise at all Only difference between this time, and previous my uses was I now have a new DB25 to HD15 cable (which I had just built) plugged into RGB 2. The HD15 end of the cable was not connected to anything. I suppose there could have been a short in the connector, but everything tested well on the cable, so maybe not

It feels like the main fuse has blown somehow, if there is such a thing, (I hope). Does anyone out there know how to get to the fuse or have any suggestions relating to my dilemma?
I sure would appreciate the help. Thanks!

If you get no relay click at turnon, there are two fuses on the AC input board right behind the AC plugin. You need to take the lens assembly out to access them, so if it's ceiling mounted it needs to come down. Sometimes those fuses blow for no reason, sometimes the AC input board shorts out, sometimes the main SMPS (under the green lens) shorts out and blows the fuse.

If it's not just a fluke fuse failure then the next most likely culprit is caps.

Replace the capacitors in the power supply board under the lenses.
It's around $10 in parts if you can solder new ones in yourself.

Either that or I have one power supply already upgraded with new caps I could sell you cheap enough.

High voltage failure or deflection failure also stop sets from powering on, you just have to work it backwards to see which is the problem. The hardest part is just taking it apart. If you are handy enought to take it apart and put it back together then you can fix it given the help here.

You are right pcCinema, it is quite a journey into the depths of my pj, but I made it down to the power board with no problems. And thanks Curt, one of the fuses you mentioned was in fact blown. Hopefully as you said, it is a random event.

Hey pcCinema, I will keep in mind your capacitors suggestion if I have further issues.

Thanks again to both of you, and everybody else on this awesome forum for that matter, I love this place! lol.

Cheers!

So I replaced the fuse put the whole rig back together, plugged in, and hit the power. The fuse popped again the moment I hit the power switch. Now that I have the thing all pulled apart again, any suggestions on where to start looking for the problem? I looked under the lower boards and it does not appear that there is a short to the aluminum cage.

Any suggestions would be oh so happily accepted.

By the way I have a working vph 1020q so if any of the boards are interchangeable maybe can they help in the diagnosis of the 1031? Just a thought.

Thanks
