TrueHD and PCM on HD DVD? I think that's a first

A Blu-ray version was also announced. I find that interesting as I thought Bandai Visual was HD DVD exclusive.

They were never exclusive. They have been dual format since the start last year. Their Japanese releases are mostly Blu-ray (the HD DVD market there is hard for them to release into) but their first release here was the Freedom HD DVD.

I think I paid $40 for the original VHS release in the States back in the early/mid-90s, heh, heh.

Still, though, I'd only consider paying crazy prices for Patlabor, Bandai :p

Yeah but old school Japanimation (that was the term used back in the day before anime became the norm and you could only get it through certain outlets) fans like myself are gonna buy it. I never really got to experience it in a HQ presentation.

Chris,

Could you change the write-up on the link you provided to reflect that you can get it on HDDVD also? It only talks about Blu-ray & DVD. But then it shows HD30. Thanks.

That link is to the Blu-ray Review Page. It has nothing to do with HD DVD. There is a separate page for the HD DVD+DVD combo release.

The main news page where the releases were talked about linked to both.

You're basically asking me to make mention in the BD Review that there is an HD DVD release.

Chris,

The link you provided says HDDVD+DVD combo.....

I don't see where it is a Blu-ray review page......

Confused I could be. :)

Ah, I gotcha, you're talking about the "what they say" section. That was as it was provided for in the solicitation sheet as it's just a cut and paste. I've fixed that.

It's nice to see some more Anime finally being released on BD/HD, but these prices really kill a lot of interest in it (The ~$100 DVD+Blu Ray sets in japan (Akira, GitS), $75 Blu-Ray only (GitS: Innocence), $30 single-episode US releases (Freedom)).

These prices are a bit more common in Japan (but even then it seems they're charging for content that not a lot of people want - the DVD side). I can afford the $50 import DVD price tags for Japanese releases I really want, but $100 is really pushing it.. $80 for a US release is even crazier.

I guess it really is just for the fans, but I can guarantee they'd make more money back by doing a larger pressing and selling them at normal prices than doing a small run and selling them at outrageous pricing.

Thanks Chris,

Keep up the good work on your site.... I've read your reviews for a long time now.

Any tidbits you have heard regarding anime titles that will be released in HD, that we haven't heard about? ;)

That's ok, I'll just ebay some of my anime DVDs to help pay for it. Oh wait... :(

Wow, looks like they're charging a premium for the extra quality and effort they put in their releases. I might have to get this anyway though, I really need some HD anime.

Bandai Visual's Freedom is $40 for 30 minutes MSRP. I will buy all of their currently announced high def releases as of now, but have decided to not purchase their standard definition releases.

They are planning on selling the 100 minute Galaxy Angel Rune disc for $50 MSRP. Their 62 minutes of standard definition for Gunbuster 2 volume 3 is $40 MSRP. Wings of Rean is also a mere 68 minutes for $40. Although I don't mind spending these prices for HD releases they are stupid prices for standard definition releases.

Expect that at some point in the future, after they've milked the hard-core fans willing to pay.
