View Full Version : Calling all Theater owners with crown moulding
Plasma George 07-12-07, 01:09 PM If you check my sig, the Thunder Deck is getting close, and this weekend is Crown Moulding Weekend...both under and over the soffit, and outside corner trim on the columns and soffits (to hide the MDF seams).
The wife and I have been going back and forth on trim color (black or gold or other??) and style of moulding.
I'm hoping other AVSers have similar colors (red, black)where we can see what the combos look like.
I'm not sold on the gold trim and that it will like nice, unless I have alot of other gold in other areas (sconces, floor trim, furniture). If you check my room, it's more a Media room (couch seating with coffee table, ceiling fan) not so much the Classic Theater decor.
Thanks
dazed_n_confuzed 07-12-07, 02:28 PM Disclaimer: I have no official training in interior design and according to my wife very little "style" of my own.
Having said that and looking at your theater I would pick an "accent color" to paint you crown moulding with. I like the red and black paint scheme, it has a very "rich" look to it, but painting you crown red or black just may be overkill.
I do like the gold option for the crown or maybe an aged copper look would mesh well with the red and black. I have even seen crown moulding painted with the "crackle" paint and it turned out very nice. You could try a small piece of crown in the crackle paint and see how it looks.

p.s. Sorry I just noticed the requirement to have a HT AND crown moulding at the moment I just have crown, still working on the HT part
This is the point where you need to be tying things together. You have very bold striking colors in terms of the Black and the Red. With a projected image you will get some of that red back onto your screen. What are your plans for your floor covering and furniture?

finishingtouchcu 07-12-07, 08:21 PM Black and gold? Hhhmmmmmmm.....I used nothing but black and gold ( and a touch of cherry ) and personally love the combo. I used benjamin moore metallic gold using my spray gun to pre- finish it. I used a yellow primer. My pics are in the photo gallery under finishingtouchcu or my picasa sight below if you would like to see them.

Tapiozona 07-12-07, 10:51 PM My theater is red and black. I debated adding gold molding throughout but am extremely happy that I ended up choosing black instead. Here's a somewhat dark panoramic picture. I have base, chair, and crown molding as well as crown molding used around the fabric frames. The screen is also surrounded by 4 inch crown...everything black.
Not to say black is the best way to go. I've seen some theaters (one in particular which had trememdous ceiling detail..all gold) which look great using the black/red with gold trim. Personally removing the excess gold and keeping it to the fabric only worked perfect.

..DoyleMy wife has been the "decor leader", and we may be going to USA FLoors in King of Prussia, PA today (about 15 minutes) away.
She love the idea of a Theater like carpet, small dense material, probably black with some gold/red design.
GUYS--thanks for the images, unfortunately they are useless, cause I already have your theaters as favorites on my laptop !
Both black trim and gold trim look amazing, I have a feeling my wife will want to lean to black, it seems to have a more "modern" feel to it, and that's our style.
The classic gold is beautiful against the black/red, but it is more "classic", and my theater room is not really a "Theater", but more of a Kicka$$ TV Watching room. :D

Well, your question has made me realized I don't have any real good shots of the finished theater crown moulding.
Here's an in progress shot:
