I have had my Benq 8700+ projector (720p dlp) for about 3 years and I'm considering upgrading to 1080p. I have been very happy with this dlp projector but because I have a small room, 12 by 12 I need a short throw projector. I am currently shooting a 92" diagonal 16 by 9 screen, the lens is 10 feet from the screen and my seating distance is about 11 feet. I'm thinking of going at least 100" diagonal screen with a new projector, but none of the new 1080p dlp's offer a short throw, so I am considering going with 1080p lcd. The Panasonic PT- AE1000U seems to have everything I need to work in this room, but will I like going from dlp to lcd? What are your experiences or comments. Of course no one sells the Panasonic locally so I have not seen it. Thanks for your comments,
George

I went from an NEC HT1100 (DLP) to the Panasonic AE1000u. Prior to the NEC I owned 3 different LCDs. The AE1000u was a tremendously big upgrade in every way from the NEC and does not suffer from any of the LCD shortcomings of my earlier model LCD projectors. I am sure that you will be pleased with the upgrade from you 8700 to the AE1000. My only complaint at all is that this projector is no where near as quiet as the 22 dB noise spec would indicate. I think it is a 30 dB projector.

Just installed a new Mits HC5000 tonight to replace my 720p Sharp. Simply amazing!! Why did I wait so long to go to 1080p?? Absolutely incredible. I ever had rainbows with the Sharp, but the contrast with this LCD pj is outstanding. Everybody says it and unless you experience it in person seeing more detail is so exciting. Every little blemish and shadow detail jumps right out at you.

Seating is 12 feet, PJ at 12.5 ft, 15 x 24 dedicated HT.

I liked my DLP, but having 1080p is fantastic and right now I could care less if it were LCD or DLP.

I strongly recommend that if at all possible audition the LCD you are considering be it the Panasonic or something else or make sure you can return it. I am a long time DLP owner and I have never had rainbow issues. I have owned several different models, including the BenQ W9000. I had the Sony Pearl for awhile but returned it because for me it was too soft. Although it threw a very nice picture, it just seemed slightly out of focus. I auditioned the Panasonic but preferred the W9000. Others I have spoken to found DILAs/LCDs more film like and, therefore, for them preferrable to DLP. It really comes down to personal preference. Coming from an 8700 I am pretty sure you would love the BenQ W9000/10000. Its too bad you can't make it work in your space.

Just for reference, which Sharp did you own previously?

Well said and I could not agree more. I looked at the Epson 1080 Pro and Pany 1000, and had the Pearl for a couple of weeks and ended up with the W10000. I am more then satsified with the W10000. I have seen the 20000 a couple of times since in a good setting, and would have to say it does not have much, if anything over the W10000 except slightly the black level. I have yet to see a RS1 or the 5000 so I will not comment on them.

I take it that the slow auto iris doesn't bother you?

Only spent about 1.5 hours playing with various HD DVD's so I did not notice it.

Thank's for your replys, it looks like those of you who switched are happy with your lcd projectors, which makes me feel better. Since there is no way that the 1080p dlp's will work in my room, that is probably what I will do. Now if only Panasonic would lower their price by $1000.00 instead of making us play the rebate game I would probably buy one today. Thanks again,
George

I agree a $1000 rebate is nuts.Since they love to play games with rebates. That is just to much money to have in the rebate game.BOB

Thanks!

Apparently the slow auto iris really bothers some people. I currently have the Mitsubishi HC3000, a DLP 720p projector which I really love, but I'm ready to upgrade to a 1080p.
