I'm using an Oppo 981HD, and a Pioneer 1015tx receiver, and whenever I play stereo DVD-A discs, there is absolutely no bass whatsoever. I'm guessing this is because there is no bass management on the 5.1 inputs.
So I plugged the stereo outputs into the CD Input on the receiver instead...and now my sub has bass.
My question is...am I able to play back the music at full resolution using the CD input? Or is it only capable through the 5.1 inputs? Thanks
You are good to go. Enjoy.

Aren't the stereo outputs on some disc players down-mixed? (i.e., they will not send the 96kHz or 192kHz tracks, but will instead be down-rez'd to 48kHz). If so, you are not getting the full output available from the DVD-A.
Does the Oppo provide any bass management? My Onkyo DV-SP1000 provides an 80Hz crossover, which works well with my monitor/sub system.
It's more then likely, that the 2ch analog inputs are "redigitized" in order to perform bass management, provided that in the speaker menu in the receiver you set speakers to "small" and set sub to "yes".
If that happens the quality of the sound will greatly depends on the A-D converters in your receiver. Of course there might be a bypass for all of this if your receiver has a "direct" or "pure audio" modes that in some cases bypasses the DSP processing, and provide direct analog path to the preamp section for volume only.

It is unclear to me how you are connecting the Oppo to the receiver. Do you mean that you are ONLY using the Oppo's R+L analog outputs, or that it is connected using all 6 of the 5.1 analog outputs? And you are connecting it to the receiver's multichannel inputs, correct?
If you are only using the Oppo to play back DVD-As in 2-channel mode, then there is a way to set the R+L analog outputs to a setting called "mixed" (I think that's the setting.) If you have the Oppo connected using all 6 of the 5.1 analog outputs, then to play a 2-channel stereo track of a DVD-A, you must specifically choose the stereo, 2-channel track in the DVD-A's menu.
If your speakers are set to LARGE in the Oppo, then there will be no subwoofer content when you play back 2-channel sources via the receiver's multichannel analog inputs; only R+L channel info. If your speakers are set to SMALL in the Oppo, then there WILL be subwoofer content when 2-channel sources are played back via the receiver's multichannel, analog inputs.

Yes, you can playback the Oppo's 2-channel, analog output via the receiver's CD inputs, which, unlike the multichannel inputs, as you discovered, will allow you to apply bass management to the Oppo's 2-channel output.

I originally had it connected using all 6 of the outputs into the multichannel inputs. But I then changed it because of the issue with stereo recordings.
My speakers are set to small, and there is still no bass on the 5.1 inputs. There is bass for 5.1 recordings...but not stereo.
Does anyone know how I can find out if the CD input is being downsampled?
