Hello All,

I recently purchased DisplayConfigX. I'm attempting to connect a mac mini to a Sanyo HT30744 HDTV.

The 1280x720 resolution displays correctly, but there is quite a bit of overscan. The top bar is cut off, and the bottom launcher is not complete. I need to bring the top and bottom down by about 24 pixels each, and the sides in by about 16 pixels on both the left and right.

I performed these actions based upon the instructions in the FAQ:

* Make image less tall: increase both vertical porches and decrease vertical active by sum of these porch changes.
* Make image less wide: increase both horizontal porches and decrease horizontal active by sum of these porch changes.

This resulted in a 1248x672 resolution, which does not display on my TV. I just get a black screen.

I simply need to figure out how to keep the 1280x720 display working, but essentially shrink the desktop a bit so I can see the task bar at the top of the screen, and the entire launcher at the bottom of the screen.

Thank you very much!

John C.

My LCD tv's 16:9 resolution overscans, but it also has a 1:1 setting that works perfectly with my Mac Mini. Does your Sanyo have that setting?

I actually owned this TV a while back. Great TV for the price. This is a 1080i CRT by the way, did you try using the 1920x1080i setting. I was able to get it on my PowerMac G4 without any overscan. It was not clear for any desktop work, but video looked great.

Also, I have the same blanking problem with my JVC 1080p native (1080i through HDMI) HD-ILA TV. The PowerMac G4 with DisplayConfigX had to go through several iterations of gradual adjustment before it would display without overscan. If I select the ultimate adjustment right off the bat, it would blank out - weird. So, I wrote an AppleScript to do the adjustment at the touch of a key like F1. I have since sold my PowerMac G4 and am waiting for the new iMacs to be released. Hopefully I won't have the same problems with the iMac, but may be the problem is with my TV!

This is easy. Just chip away at the plastic that covers the part of the glass tube. This will "unlock" the missing pixels. :D

Nah, just kidding. Have you tried using the Display System Pref's overscan button. This button "can" perform the necessary shrinking to overcome a TV's inability to defeat overscan.

Thanks for the replies all...

The TV has a great picture, but pretty weak controls. There's no real 1:1 setting that I'm aware of. It's got Pic1, Pic2, Pic3 and Pic4 "picture shapes" which essentially go from SD 4:3 resolution to 3 different 16:9 zoom resolutions. All of those "shapes" have the same cutoff.

DisplayConfigX actually detects the TV accurately as a Sanyo, etc....

Are you sure it's 1080i? I think the new HT30746 is 1080i, but I always thought the older HT30744 was 720p.

I found the specs on the us sanyo site, and you're right.

Looks like I'll give 1920x1080 a try when I get home today.

This is a PPC mini using a DVI->HDMI cable BTW.

I did try using the overscan button in the default OSX display properties, and it shrank it a bit too much. That may be my best option, but now that I've been messing with DisplayConfigX and SetResX, that option is gone. I'll see what I can do.

What does the overscan button actually do anyway? With it on, the picture seems more clear, but too big, and with it off, it's too small, and fuzzier.

Thanks for the tips guys, I'll let you all know how it goes.
