We built a great HT last time around, about 3 years ago as a result of input from members here. That was a from-scratch project in an unfinished basement room.

Now we are in a 'new' home, 14 yrs old actually, and the room that will be the theater has already been finished by the prior owner. Fortunately, there is adequate access to the joists from an adjacent unfinished area (which I'm thinking will also house all the gear). The room is 15 x 20 with drywall ceiling and what appears to be randomly placed can lights, about 8-10 in number. The screen will occupy one of the 15 ft walls.

I will be painting, carpeting, etc, but what I want to do is give the room a little drama, as it seems very blah. What I thought was a pair of soffits running down the 20 ft wall and appearing to converge into the screen, one on each wall, with perhaps rope lights inside.

Then I saw the Batcave writeup, and the first pic in the show is almost exactly what I had in mind, although the installer only seems to have done one wall.

I would really appreciate some ideas on what material (and would work for this sort of thing. I'd like it to be 12" wide and of course 20' long. I thought of drywall, but as am going DIY and my mud skills aren't great, would like to avoid that if possible. Also would like to stay as light in weight as possible so hardware does not become a critical issue. Finally, it should look continuous of course, like one long panel even if it is comprised of separate sections.

The key to this soffit (maybe it's not actually a soffit but more of a ledge) is that it will be wall-hugging on one side but open to the room on the other.

Have done some light work and finish before so am not a total amateur, but can't really boast of pro skills either.

Here is the link to the Batcave writeup for those who missed it. Pic 1 shows the soffit.

I angled my edges instead of the crown molding route just to give it a different look.
