View Full Version : Noob to PS3 as Media Server Needs Help

I have just started setting up my PS3 as a media server. I've installed WMP 11 and enabled sharing with the PS3, however, I'm having some weird issues.

1. Photos - one or more folders from my photo archive on my external harddrive won't load into WMP 11. I've added the parent folder to my list of locations to be monitored, but not all the subfolders are getting picked up. Any guesses?

2. Music - WMP 11 was able to add all my music to its library. However, on my PS3, I'm only seeing the annoying music that came with my computer and which lives in my My Music/All Users folders. The rest of my music shows up in WMP 11, but not in the PS3. I think these are all or almost all MP3s.

3. Videos - Seems like few video formats are supported and most of my videos won't play on the PS3, though they will on WMP 11. Any way to improve this?

Generally, are there tricks to getting your full WMP 11 library accessible and playing properly on the PS3, or is that not really possible? Does this seem surprisingly difficult and unintuitive to others, or is this my problem?

Also, can I buy or download another Media Server program that will work much better than WMP 11, or do they all have their faults? I've read about TVersity and Nero, but can't tell if they're really better in the end.

Is there a detailed FAQ or instruction manual on how the PS3 media player is supposed to work anywhere out there?

I did use TVersity for a while before dedicating a new machine to my Home Theatre. For #3 you'll need to transcode everything to MPEG2 before streaming to the PS3 to increase the amount of videos you can watch. TVeristy does do this fairly well, although you better have a pretty sizable machine to pull it off with good resolution.

With TVersity I didn't have any audio or picture streaming issues at all. I streamed on-line radio broadcasts, all of my MP3 files and all of my pics without issue.

Video content while streaming is still a little hit or miss...

Good Luck, but I'd try TVersity as it's free and easy to install and setup, and of course easy to uninstall as well.
