View Full Version : The Triplets of Belleville on HD-Freakin'-DVD!!!
I don't know, maybe I'm alone in loving this movie, but I just saw that Warner France has announced this title for release on Oct 31, and I am ecstatic! It is just so damn charming, engrossing, inventive and just plain enjoyable. Great characters and a wonderfully surreal story. It was one of my favorite films of 2003. And the other "good" thing is that the dialog is very sparse, so even if this French HD-DVD doesn't have English subs, it's no problem at all.
Anyways, here is the imdb link for people that aren't familiar with the movie: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0286244/
And here is the link to the announcement at the blog: http://hddvdformat.blogspot.com/2007/07/some-upcoming-hd-dvds-from-warner-home.html

FrancescoP 07-13-07, 02:24 PM I loved this masterpiece!!! Best animated european movie ever!
wittangamo 07-13-07, 02:42 PM That's great news! I loved the movie and especially the music. For those who aren't familiar with this animated hootarama, Rogert Ebert's review starts out:
"The Triplets of Belleville" will have you walking out of the theater with a goofy damn grin on your face.
And goes on to describe it as:
Monsieur Hulot meets Tim Burton, or the Marquis de Sade meets Lance Armstrong . . . Felix the Cat with firecrackers tied to his tail, in a story involving the French nephew and aunt of the Reservoir Dogs, and a score by Spike Jones. No, the other Spike Jones.
I've talked to a few people who didn't like it, but they were all humorless creeps so I never talked to them again.
And before the subtitle police arrive to start demanding a dubbed version, there are only a few words of dialogue in the entire film and those are mostly background conversations of no significance to the plot. I honestly don't remember whether the existing DVD has subs, all I can remember is laughing out loud and humming the theme song for days after watching it.
"Triplets of Belleville" was nominated for the animation Oscar and lost to the inferior but bigger box-office "Finding Nemo." Watch it, and you'll see the Frenchies was robbed.
I'm importing this one as soon as it's out. What a Halloween treat.
cybereality 07-13-07, 02:43 PM Yeah, I saw that in theaters. Probably the most amazing animation I have ever seen on the big screen. Its a classic movie, fun for the whole family.
Also, I don't think there is any dialog so its safe to get the import. Yes, the film is so avante-garde that they don't need to speak. Its that good.
I can't believe it lost to Finding Nemo. I wonder how something like that happens...

No it doesn't. I remember watching the DVD and wondering about the subs for about a minute before I forgot all about the language issue and was totally engrossed in the film. I can't wait to get this HD-DVD in my grubby little hands.
Nice. Great movie. Looked good on HDNet.
SamwisetheBrave 07-13-07, 04:32 PM HD-Freaking-DVD...?
Great. Just what we need: another format!
Bleddyn H Williams 07-13-07, 04:42 PM I had this on the R1 disc, and upgraded to the UK Tartan disc, which was much better - Sony's R1 disc had some real nasty edge enhancement that was absent on the R2.
The colors of this film are beautiful. If the HD DVD delivers, it could be grand, and people coming from the weak R1 disc could be even more amazed!

Here's what I wrote about it a million years ago when I reviewed the DVD (http://www.dvdfile.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=558&Itemid=3):
The film's original language being French, one might be annoyed that the DVD's only credited audio options are English and Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1 dub tracks. However, when you see the movie you'll realize that there is next to no speaking in it. Defaulting to the English track, almost all of the incidental dialogue heard in the background of scenes (a radio announcer's voice, the grumblings of passers-by) remains in its original French without translation. Clips of these scenes appear in the supplemental features with subtitles for some of this speaking, but (aside from the opening title credit) the DVD offers no subtitle options at all. There is a closed captioning track, oddly, which translates primarily just the sound effects. Fortunately, the movie works just fine without any translation, and not knowing the language may even enhance by the alien-ness of it all. The English or Spanish dubbing only comes into play for about 3 spoken lines, none of which are terribly important or distracting.
"Triplets of Belleville" was nominated for the animation Oscar and lost to the inferior but bigger box-office "Finding Nemo." Watch it, and you'll see the Frenchies was robbed.
I loved the first half of the movie, but thought it took a nosedive in the second half.

I've wanted for a long time to pick up the R2 from Xploited but everytime I go back to the R1 I just can't imagine it looking any better, really. Now that it's coming to HD DVD, hopefully Tony (Xploited) will find another way to pry's my money. ;)
HD-Freaking-DVD...?
Great. Just what we need: another format!
It's...
the ONLY format!!! ;)

Thanks!
wittangamo 07-14-07, 03:37 PM Oh, how's the SD DVD?
Thanks!
Not bad. A fun rental, if only to whet your appetite for the HD DVD version.
Thanks for the heads up. I'll be buying this on the IMDB rating alone.
Backlash 07-14-07, 11:17 PM Hey Samwise, be grateful it's not HD+Freaking-DVD. That plays on almost nothing.
Very funny guys. :p
Anyways, cover art has been posted on the blog:

Looking forward to this one too. I'll finally have some good 2D animation in 1080p (the Blu-ray Disc of "Paprika" didn't count thanks to the filtering).
cybereality 08-22-07, 08:16 PM Quite possibly the best animated movie ever created. A must blind-buy if you haven't seen it.
Favelle 08-23-07, 01:34 PM I always loved this movie!! Only problem is, after watching it, everytime, I can't get those stupid jungles outta my head!!! Ha ha, I'm humming the stupid things all day long for a week!
spectator 08-23-07, 01:58 PM Weird- I've always seen the French (ie. original) title as "Belleville Rendezvous". A little shocking to see something different on the French cover.
Otis Widlflower 08-23-07, 06:32 PM Yet another DVD I'll be giving to someone as a handmedown.. Surprising that there's no English subtitles though, how hard could it have been to include that option? I guess enough Brits learn French in school...
Favelle 08-23-07, 06:35 PM I don't think there was enough talking to even warrant subtitles were there? I saw it in the theater and there wasn't any subtitles.
There's no real dialog in the film, just background incidental radio (where you'll catch everything important just from the tone of the announcer) and stuff.
I was getting a little antsy, considering that this is still not listed on amazon.fr, but I just found a review for the upcoming HD-DVD, so hopefully it's still on course for a 10/31 release. The reviewer seems to rave about the picture quality, while showing a little disappointment, that there is no lossless track on this disk. The reviewer gives it a 5/5 for PQ and a 4/5 for AQ. Anyways, here's a link to the review (in French of course), and an excerpt machine translated via google:
http://www.dvdcritiques.com/critiquesHD/hd_visu.aspx?dvd=5094
Discovered with the version on DVD collector, this release HD DVD literally allowed me to rediscover the film. The additional pixels in the definition can capture a lot of details and makes much tribute to the work of art.
With the DVD version, I did not think that the gain would be blatant edition HD. It must be said that the film is an excuse for a demonstration HD: degraded applats, small details, and so on.
The voyage across the Atlantic with the cargo pursued by the small pedal in the middle of the storm is just one example. Overall, I rediscovered the film and all its little details.
OMG I'm soooo excited for this release! :D
bigjsouth 10-24-07, 11:11 AM You talked me into getting it! I have not seen it so it will be a blind buy. I hope this is not another "The Host", which I'm glad I rented first!

Really good catch!!!!!
On HD DVD on top of that so need to worry about importing this one.
Capek I am also as surprised as you are to find other peoples on AVS that enjoyed this one. I am really anxious to hear the sound track.
Tolstoi 10-24-07, 01:47 PM Not available at Amazon.fr I had to ordered it from FNAC. I hate buying fro them, their shipping & handling price for shipment to Canada is way to expensive compared to Amazon.

It actually is listed on amazon.fr, just without the proper information. The actual release though is listed here:
EDIT: The forum keeps editing part of the link for some reason. But it's the listing without cover art with a release date of 10/31
The release date and price are correct, but it's listed as a DVD. But while I'm sure that is it, I'm gonna wait until they have the correct information up, or maybe I'll wait to see if exploited has it, and compare prices.
shinksma 10-24-07, 03:42 PM EDIT: The forum keeps editing part of the link for some reason. But it's the listing without cover art with a release date of 10/31
The reason AVS edits the link is because any link to known click-through sellers like Amazon can have personal data. If you make sure your link is direct to the product (delete everything in the hyperlink after the ASIN, e.g. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000W00Y0O, to use the Queen Live in Montreal HD DVD as an example), then AVS will allow the link.
I want to pick this up, so if I can find it cheap enough, I'll snag it. Theoretically, this is a title amazon.ca (Canada) should carry, due to the French-Canadian market. But I don't see the HD DVD, only regular DVD.

OK, thanks for the info. So here's the link then:

I assume they'll have the correct info up once the product is available at least. Since I've ordered from foreign amazons before, I'd feel more comfortable ordering for them then one of the french retailers that has the correct info up on their preorder pages.

"Belleville Rendez-vous" is the British release title. The American DVD comes from a British source and has that title on-screen during the opening credits, which the disc's subtitles below translate as "The Triplets of Belleville".

OT:
Thanks lol. Was there for 7 years but as my parents are getting older I felt that I needed to come back to the US and be close to them. However, France and I are not over! I will move back at some point.
OT:
I agree that Les Triplettes is an excellent movie. I must admit I fell asleep during it however  . It was the summer of the heat wave and I had no AC in Paris so went to the movies for some comfort. The cool AC put me to sleep!
Well, amazon.fr has it in stock and listed correctly as an HD-DVD, but the weak dollar freakin' kills me! :(
$31.79 Euros shipped comes out to $45. Too rich for my blood atm I'm afraid. :(

You need to order more basically to make it worthwhile. My shipping on 6 HD-DVDs with speedy shipping was only 26 euros.
Yay! They just lowered the price from 24 euros to 14, so with shipping, it comes out to $36.60. Much more manageable. I can't wait to receive this disk!

Nope. HD-DVD format blog, when they first announced the title back in July, mentioned that it "was very likely to be HD-DVD exclusive", and it looks like that assumption has held out to be true. It's interesting that Warner France would choose to release this only on one format. I wish I knew the reasons behind that decision.
My copy arrived from www.fnac.com :D
The video transfer is absolutely excellent. In some shots, there's edge enhancement, but it looks like this was added by the filmmakers themselves, not the people doing the video transfer - because it only affects the backgrounds, not the characters.
Looks excellent :)

Amen to that, I believed the hype and bought the host sight unseen, even convinced my wife to watch it with me...what a mistake! Anyways you guys are tempting me, perhaps I'll bite :)
ok just ordered it from amazon.fr, came out to about 33 bucks Canadian shipped..I'm trusting you guys.......

Well, as you say it could be worse. At least overall the PQ is great. I can't wait to receive my copy next week. This is probably my most highly anticipated HD-DVD that's been announced or released so far. :)
Is this worth buying if ive never heard of or seen it before?
Is this worth buying if ive never heard of or seen it before?
If you only like typical Hollywood style films, I might say no. Otherwise, if you're a true movie fan, I can't imagine you not liking it. But then again, I have no idea about your tastes when it comes to movies, so take my opinion with a massive grain of salt. Maybe reading what other people have to say about it would help you come to a decision. It has a very high RT rating:
http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/triplets_of_belleville/
Also, maybe listen to the Ebert and Roeper review. I think it captures the film about as well as one can hope:

Got my copy from Amazon.fr a few days ago, having flicked through really quickly it looks excellent :) 1080p VC1 (1.66 AR), with DTS-HD MA. Definatly better than the HDNet broadcast from a while ago. If I had one super extreme nitpick is that the dark suits of the two hencemen look a bit dodgy (some slight blocking, if you're reaaaaaally looking for it...)... otherwise I'm very pleased with the disc.

I love this format! :D
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y47/capek/784ffe9a.jpg
Now time for some late night viewing.
edit: After watching it, WOW am I happy! This is definitely a great disk. Personally I didn't see any blocking in the bad guys suits, though I looked very hard. And about the EE, I could almost see it in some of the skyline shots, but it really kind of looked like what I've seen in other HD cel-based animation, where, for lack of a better description, overlapping cels aren't colored so that they will blend seamlessly, so that there is what looks like a halo, but is really issue inherent in the animation processes currently used. Bandai talked about this issue they discovered when first investigating getting into HD with Microsoft in '06.
Anyways, this is a great looking disk, definitely one of my favorite HD-DVDs, and I can't wait to watch it again tomorrow afternoon so I can crank up the sound and really experience this film.

Here's the right link specially for you :

It will be a good training in French just before moving to the HD-DVD audio track !
If you don't get it all, don't be alarmed. You just have to take a close look at the ratings and it will chill you out ! They speak for themselves !
Otherwise, you can get your favorite English-French dike and start doing the thing.
If you experienced some problems, I can be of help whatsoever...(Lafayette is a fellow of mine...).
Great news, thanks. :D
It's amazing to see that this A.M. is a cult movie in the U.S. !
In France, it met a fair success in the theaters but hasn't become a phenomenon just like here as far as I can see.
Too bad for you that English subtitles shouldn't be provided !
But it doesn't prevent the REAL fans just like you all are to buy it at a high price...
This is another sign of a warming in the French-American relationships !!!
Long live borderless HD-DVD ! (and thanks to you all to offer 3 times more titles in the US than in France - playable in every player and quite systematically with French track and ST...)
There shouldn't be English subs. There's no need for them on this movie. The US DVD release didn't contain English subs. There's no dialogue, outside of a couple ancillary TV and radio broadcasts that are on in the background of a couple scenes. No need for those to be subbed.
guyutemsg 11-28-07, 09:48 AM Got my copy from amazon.fr last week. This movie is FREAKIN amazing. NOW I understand the thread title for this release.
The music is great. The art is unbelievable. The story is engaging. Excellent blind buy on your guys recommendation. Thank you!!
Got my copy today. Really looking forward to seeing it!
Don't forget when ordering from amazon france they remove VAT at the end. So that always helps (VAT is basicly TAX that's already added to the price. I kinda wish they did that in the US as I think prices would be better on some stuff)
I'm awaiting my movies from amazon.fr really hope they come today as the expected time was nov 27-dec 3.
Anyway I will get this at some point but I've been ordering all the other french movies first. I've got 4 now, 2 on the way.

I didn't even bother looking at the back of the box to see what audio tracks this had, I just went on that French review, which said it didn't have a lossless track. But I just happened to take a glance while taking some screen shots last night, and what do you know, it has a Master Audio track after all! There's no way I can listen to it with my current setup, but it's still nice to know it has a lossless track.
