I've been reading this board for a while now and just decided to join. Great information from a lot of intelligent people on here. I guess I will make it my new home. :)

Here's my question...

I'm a little stumped as to what kind of tv to get for myself. I know I want to stay around the $1,500 price range. Initially I was thinking 37' to 42' TV. I will be using the TV mostly for watching sporting activities and playing video games (XBox 360).

Do I need an LCD or Plasma? 1080p or 720p? Also, a good name brand would be nice as well. I understand in many of the topics on this forum have debated 1080P or 720p and also which is better between LCD or Plasma. I was hoping with me just wanting to watch sports and play games on it that there might be one that is distinctly better for that usage. Any help would be greatly appreciated. :D

It would help if you can tell us more. What is your expected viewing distance? Your room's lighting?

Cheers, :)

Viewing distance will be 10 to 15 ft. Hope thats not too wide of a range but I will be moving into a new place very soon and haven't gotten it measured it out yet.

As far as room lighting goes. I like to keep places pretty dark.

Because you can reasonably control the lighting, I would recommend plasma for overall PQ. I am biased that direction.

Because IR has been greatly reduced and virtually eliminated from some new plasma displays, I believe it also a good choice now for gaming as well.

Your distance is far enough that you can't buy too large of a screen. Buy as large as you can afford. Well the 103" Panny may be a bit too large.

I reread your question and saw your budget, there are some respectable 50" plasmas just within your range. You might consider the Panny professional series 9UK, which are being phased out for the new 10UK models. There are threads devoted to various displays and people there will be able to answer more specifically regarding those displays.

Cheers, :)
