View Full Version : Should I buy a ps3?

I was intrigued to see the ps3 drop to $499 at Amazon w/a blu-ray DVD and a DVD remote control. I sat on it, debating and today the price has been upped to $522 [yeah, I know, $23]. Anyway, I'm not a huge gamer, I own a 360 and have enjoyed Gears of War and Crackdown. I'm console agnostic, I want something I can play with friends and simply enjoy the games (I don't want to get frustrated, which happened in one of the Tom Clancy games). Anyway, other than Resistance: Fall of Man, I don't see anything calling out to me. The (total of) 6 free blu-ray discs is interesting but doesn't have the discs I want. It seems as though the game situation will be better by Christmas; so, do I wait or buy now?

Sure, its a great deal, the question is do you want one? If you can answer that question, then you would know the answer. There will be the most 1st party games released on the system that will encourage, and showcase the technology of the PS3. Then I assume it will be good times.

Plus which other platform offers that much variety? I am only talking first party here.

All the other third party games should be on ship also.

Then you get that sweet deal on the 60gb for 500 you add free 5 blu ray movies, and controller and you set.

I paid 800+ when i first bought the system. Now you can imagine how good you saving.

Plus lets not forget that my first 4 Blu Ray purchase cost me 140 and some change at BB.

It seems like you are trying to give reasons not to get one. It is a big purchase even with the price drop. Like GW said above though you are saving a lot more now with the price drop and free stuff. It all depends on how much disposable income you have. I say get it now with Resitance which will keep you held over for awhile and then by the time you are done with it some new games will be out. Plus you will have some time to save up money for some new games.

I bought one this week and don't regret it. I am also a more casual gamer (at least until the new SOCOM drops) and was prepared to wait until the holidays for the price drop, but when it came early it was a pleasant surprise to me so I decided to jump on it. With a busy schedule this week, I've only had time to play some Resistance, download some demos and trailers, and start tinkering with Ubuntu (Linux), but so far I'm really impressed. This thing has great potential, IMO. I can't wait for the weekend to try some DVDs and PS2 games and check out the upscaling. If you are pretty lukewarm about it I'd say wait until the holidays, but if that voice in your head keeps whispering "PS3" to you every day, I'd recommend listening to it and getting it now ;)

Thanks for the input. I'll try and get the amazon $499 deal and enjoy blu-ray and resistance while I wait for other games down the road. Any other recommendations on a game besides resistance and can I play multi-player? [a side note: I'm older and don't have tons of time to play and prefer to play with like-minded individuals who just want to play, have fun and not talk crap]

I know exactly what you mean :D

As for other fun multiplayer games, I'd highly recommend Motorstorm and Rainbow Six: Las Vegas. Of course, it really depends on what kinds of games you're into.

If you are going to get a PS3 at some point (now, Xmas, next year) why wait? I think pricing is pretty competative now, especially with the 5 free blu ray discs. Sure the 80G might end up being the same price in 6 months, or maybe they will give you a free extra controller or something, but the experience with the PS3 will not change. Do not worry about the games, they will eventually come, but you have an Xbox anyways so that should not be a problem. You may prefer the interface on one system over the other, may prefer specific games on one system over the other, but you will have hedged yourself and will have access to whatever the future holds. Currently my PS3 sees more duty watching blu-ray movies than playing games, but I too like collecting things and could not pass on the PS3. I did not need one, but its fun having it anyways.

I'm not a big gamer....except for Turismo.....can't wait... but I'm getting a hdtv soon and will use it for dvd/blueray. My question is can you surf the web just like a computer.....I mean does it look the same or like webTV :( or do you have to do everything through sonyonline? Sorry if this is daft, but I've never used any game console for online activity.

Also, not sure if this is the proper place, but will the old GT4 steering wheel be compatible with PS3 and GT5? TIA

More or less, yes, you can browse the internet like a computer.

Never used a webTV before.

I tried the web browser on a 120" screen. Its OK (actually its pretty bad, despite changing the fonts, trying to make things fit properly etc as the screenis huge) if you are desperate (a keyboard would help), but I find it much easier to just carry a notebook and browse on that rather than the PS3.

On the PS3 forums, of course everyone is going to tell you to get one. :p

The PS3 fit my needs perfectly, which is a HD movie player, and HD gaming machine. Look at your own needs and see if it matches up. As everyone else has said, if you are dreaming about a PS3, and think about it all the time, just spare yourself the torture and buy one. ;)

I guess you never used the PS3 and your 120" screen to browse a porn sight, uh? :)

With kids and wife floating around, one does have to be discrete  (thinks of a way to get wife and kids to go away for 'vacation' somewhere.... :D )

LOL!

Aside from porn/genitals....I am putting myself through the same agony here as far is when/if to get the PS3. My main use at this point would be for upconvert DVD and Blu-Ray, although I am still nervous about the whole Blu-Ray/HDDVD thing. Basically, Ive been given $300 in gifts recently and I can buy an HDDVD player or chip in extra and get a PS3. So torn, and I just wish I knew how this format war would play out.

Is the blu-ray player on the PS3 as good as a stand alone Blu-Ray? Might want to kill 2 birds so to speak!

Another food for thought, unlikely this 'war' is going to end anytime soon. With holiday season in 6 months, there will be a push from both sides and you will get remarkable deals. The HD add on is the cheapest out there, but check out costco, they have stand alone HD players (toshiba) barely above ~$200. For the price difference between the HD add on and stand alone player, get the stand alone player (unless the HD add on drops in price even more to less than ~150). If you want to venture into 'HD' then the HD players are cheaper currently. Be warned however, once you go HD you can never go back to regular DVD's and soon you will want a blu ray player as well. PS3 is a decent upconverter. I have several friends pick the Toshiba Xa2 over the PS3 mainly because of the upconverting features and the analogue 5.1 out (so that way they will still get True HD, without upgrading their receivers)

I'd suggest just getting a PS3 now, and getting the most use out of it. If you're mainly using the console for gaming and BD watching (aka not media serving), a 60gb hard drive will be plenty. I got my console in March, just as the 20gb consoles were phased out, and I couldn't be happier. The majority of use is BD movies, but I do own Resistance and Ninja Gaiden Sigma (excellent game to rent/buy, especially if you haven't played the Xbox versions). Assuming you have an HDTV, I really think you'll like what Blu-ray has to offer. From what it sounds like, the PS3 will almost always be within 2 models, priced $500 and $600, so it's really your call. Motorstorm and an extra 20gb of HD space do not (in my opinion) add up to $100 of value, so I would honestly say just jump on while you can to the 60gb. Also keep in mind that the 60gb is the last chance to get the Emotion Engine chip (which does hardware backwards compatibility for PS2 and PSX games), as the 80gb US console will NOT have this chip (similar to European models). Go for it!

Protip: There is a Ninja Gaiden Sigma demo on the PS Store. Download it. Now.

It's rated as one of the best Blu-Ray players.

I wish I could help, but I'm also trying to decide whether or not to pull the trigger.

I'm not sure if you heard or not, but there's HUGE confusion over the whole price cut thing. $499 is the new price for the 60GB version. Supposedly, they are doing this to clear out stock of the 60GB version. Once they're gone, they're gone. Why? Because they're releasing an 80GB version that will retail for $599 (who knows if/when the price will go down on this one).

So it's easy to say, "okay, I'll wait for the 80GB version." But consider this: the 60GB version contains the Emotion Engine chip set which is used for hardware-based PS2 backwards compatability. The 80GB version will NOT have the Emotion Engine. Instead, Sony is saving money by using software based emulation, which currently only covers around 80% compatibility.

Have a nice day.

I feel like I should get the $499 system now since we might not see this price for a ps3 until much later.

Also, this system has the Emotion Engine and I like to have the piece of mind that I can play all my old favorites without having to worry about emulation compatibility or updates. I know that if I wait and get one without the emotion engine I will regret not just getting it sooner.

I'm planning on getting Fight Night 3, Motorstorm, RFOM, and oblivion special edition....I should probably start counting up how many sick days I can use at work...

I'm also on the fence of whether to get a PS3 or not. I already have a 360 and a Wii (and PC). If I did get it, it would be used as a Blu-Ray player in the theater room I'm about to build and play my games in 1080p instead of 720p like on the 360. Would the PS3 be a good match with a theater room?
