View Full Version : I have some questions about the Samsung 400PXn... MikeTheVike 07-13-07, 03:34 PM I'm trying to get a dual screen setup going, using the tv as one screen, and a computer lcd as the other. I'm having trouble finding info on this tv to see if its even possible. Any help would be great. Quatre 08-07-07, 02:46 AM I'm interested in more info about this tv as well. It comes with Win XP installed? how do you navigate windows? with the remote control? or can you use a wireless usb mouse and keyboard? I'm between this Samsung 400PXn and the HP SLC3760N MediaSmart LCD TV. but the HP is only 37" and is restricted to certain media file types where as at tv with win XP built in is going to be much more flexible though possibly harder to navigate. I mostly want something that can play x.264 video files which a pc can and if the Samsung 400PXn with win xp built in has windows media player as it should then it can play x.264 video files. But, how do access/view/play files on the tv? does it have a usb port for connecting ext. usb hard drives? does it have an ethernet port or wifi like the HP media smart tv has both? so you can connect to your pc to access any files. I guess best way since there seems to be no info on this tv and no owners thread or anything would be to just try one out from a store that has a decent return policy to make sure it does what you want it to before being stuck with it. unless the store can answer it which they probably can't then that is what i would want to do. problem with that is that there doesnt' seem to be any local stores that have it. Quatre 08-07-07, 03:00 AM neither of the 2 are 1920x180p which is a big dissapointment and i'm not sure how you make a tv with win xp when pc's and pc monitors can do much higher res then 1920x1080 and yet they dont even make the samsung with winxp built in do 1920x1080p? instead its 1366x768? semtex 08-08-07, 02:40 PM this tv doesnt come with windows installed on it. its just a tv not a pc/tv combo... where did you get that from?? semtex 08-08-07, 02:43 PM and just so we are all clear this unit isnt even a TV its a monitor.. no tuner.. (or speakers) Quatre 08-09-07, 01:28 AM all the info on this & the 46" version makes it sound like it has winxp embedded. im looking for a tv that i can connect to my pc via wifi or ethernet cable & play anything on it ha i can on my pc like x.264 hd video files. both this & the hp media smart tv do have wifi & an ethernet port i believe (though not 100% the samsung 400pxn has wifi) but the hp media smart tv only plays certain file formats on its own and x.264 isnt one of them. im trying to find a solution that doesnt invole connecting my pc to my tv on the opposite corner of the room with a dvi cable from vid card to tv. i mean i guess if i could get a long enough dvi or dvi to hdmi cable to go along theoutside wall around 3 corners of the room & into tv but tha is a long run & will be visible along the one wall/floor though i already have ethernet cale running that way. i could go that route but not sre the make dvi or hdmi to dvi cable that long & i cant go along the shorter side of the oom o the tv because there i doo in the way i dont want to run a cable round door frame. along floor against wall under window is bad enough though the rest of the run is behind a desk so i dont mind but again i already have ethernet cable run so id prefer to make use of that and dont think the make dvi or hdmi able that long that will till work as i know at least hdmi loses signa if too long of a run. i could have sworn evrything ive read says this tv comes with winxp embedded. if it doesnt then hat does the included mediagate software do? id rather have 1080p anyway. have to see what connections the bfg 880 gts oc2 vid card im getting has. prob a sep dvi for tv out though most tvs now only have hdmi, so i will just need a really long dvi to hdmi cable. then i wont need to bother with the non 1080p 37" hp mediasmart lcd which only plays certain media type or his samsung tv 40" lcd also not 1080p & have to buy the speakers sep. any 40-42" 1080p lcd tha have dvi or are in general ideal for connecting to pc? tech_dilettante 10-01-07, 05:04 PM The new HP MediaSmart TVs (SL4278n & SL4778n) will play X.264. The file needs to be on a uPnP-enabled device, then the TV will pull the file and decode it locally on the TV. Video file extensions (and codecs) recognized and decoded by the TV include: .avi (Divx, xvid, MPEG-4, ASP), .divx (MPEG-4, ASP), .dvr-ms (MPEG-2), .mp4 (MPEG-4, part 2, H.264), .mov (MPEG-4, part 2, H.264), .mpg (MPEG-1, MPEG-2), .wmv/asf (WMV9, VC-1), .m2t/.ts (MPEG-2[TS] up to MP@HL). TV can get content wired or wirelessly (B, A, G, and N). Works well, but I've had intermittant issues with DVR-MS files are are hi-def. Standard def is no issue - kids use it all the time. Quatre 10-03-07, 03:00 AM what is a uPnP enabled device? im assuming just leaving the files on a computer would work though the ability to use an external usb, firewire or sata hdd would be sweet too. tech_dilettante 10-05-07, 12:16 PM uPnP is "universal plug & play". Just a set of communication protocols for ensuring operability between devices from different manufacturers. DLNA (which we are starting to see in the AV space) is managing a uPnP AV standard. Anyway, the TV just needs a harddrive with a uPnP "server software" installed. The uPnP software makes files on the harddrive visible to the TV ("over here, hey, I'm available for playback!"). So, if you have USB hard drive attached to your PC you can playback the content because the PC's uPnP software makes it visible (if you choose to make it visible). In the case of my MediaVault NAS, the uPnP software is already installed, so the communication goes directly from the NAS to the TV -- not passing through any PC. This is not true of a USB harddrive. (Note -- I recently saw a Linksys router that allows you to connect a USB harddrive and the router has the uPnP software to share the content on the network.) Bottom line: Any harddrive device connected to a PC with content available can be passed by the PC to the TV. Quatre 10-05-07, 11:00 PM awesome thanks for the explanation. yeah i would prob get the tv (42") for my home office where i have an ethernet wire run from my pc owhich has internal & external usb, firewire, & sata hdd. i have ethernt wall jacks to tvs on 2 othr floors but they have a 67 & 61" tv in front of them so even the 47" wouldnt be big enough. and in the bedroom i hve an ambilight plasma so would want to keep a ambilgiht tv in here (prob 47" ambilight lcd eventually) point being in looking for something tha can play x264 video files & other media the hp media smart tv isnt he best option for me. id rather a portable device tha i can use at my lrgst main tv and/or move around to other tvs. for a new hom ofice tv its still prob a good way to go but im not going to watch movies alone in an offie chair in my home home office. or bring ppl in that room to see pictures & home video. (which i have an avchd vid cam that the bes thing to play those off are the ps3 otherwise you have to burn a sd or hd dvd plus you can put a lrgr hdd in ps3 to hold more) i kno there are some devices like the mediagate & tivx tha can play diff formats of media but what is the one your taking about. maybe i should pm you if this is off topic but this was a samsung tv thread & we got on he hp mediasmart tv anyway cus its more what most of us were looking for. again im just mostly looking for something semi portabl that can play x264 video files on diff tvs but the hp media smart tvs are def bettr then i thought (as x.264 wasnt listed as a supported file format) & ill prob eventually get one. Quatre 11-07-07, 01:09 AM The new HP MediaSmart TVs (SL4278n & SL4778n) will play X.264. The file needs to be on a uPnP-enabled device, then the TV will pull the file and decode it locally on the TV. Standard def is no issue - kids use it all the time. you said it can play x.264 video files. but then you list other video file formats like h.264. i'm looking for .mkv (x.264) namely but good to see it can play the .m2ts, .ts and prob . mts then which one of those is what my avchd camcorder uses. i think i'm going to go with the 42" hp media smart, is there a thread on this tv or anyone know where has the bet deal on it currently? |
