View Full Version : PS3 Madden '08 Football will be 60fps (1up wrong again)
joeblow 07-13-07, 06:18 PM EDIT: The site admin has retracted (http://maddenwars.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=104&Itemid=2) his earlier story... PS3 Madden is only 30fps, disregard the rest below.
++++++++++++++
Despite 1up's report that the PS3 will get a 30fps Madden this year compared to 60fps on the X360, it turns out that they were wrong. EA invited some Madden fans yesterday to ESPN's Espy Awards for a Community Day, and this is some info learned by a Madden Football website's admin:

So I talked to Kendall Boyd who is the producer of NCAA 08 on next gen and I asked him the tough questions.
1. Is there a delay with the PS3 version of NCAA 08?
2. Does the PS3 version run at 30 fps unlike its rival XBOX 360 that runs at 60 fps.
A1. There is no delay, he expects PS3 copies to be delivered in full. He did say earlier that the PS3 may not get to smaller retail stores, but then backed away from that statement and issuing that the PS3 will be sold on time.
A2. The PS3 version of NCAA 08 will be at 30 fps. Although this is a big blow, the Madden Version of PS3 will run at 60 fps.

_Avarice_ 07-13-07, 06:21 PM huh! hope that pans out.
joeblow 07-13-07, 10:11 PM Yeah, it's also stated here (http://www.n4g.com/News-51891.aspx) as well:
ClevelandRob 07-14-07, 10:40 AM I hope this is true... pretty amazing how many people replied to the thread of Madden only being 30fps and now that it could actually be 60fps, no one is interested!
metrognomerical 07-14-07, 10:48 AM good for us if its true and it runs consistent at that framerate. I've said all along that the addictiveness of the game itself is gonna sell it either way.

Because when it comes to Sony only bad news is news. Does anyone know if 1up has corrected their report?
first let EA fix the characters models of MAdden. i am tired of seeing the same plastic characters the whole time. madden is the best selling game for EA and they threat the charchter graphics like garbage.
i wouldlike to see MAdden with the character models and physcics from KillZone 2. then it would be an amazing game to watch and play!

You'll probably have to wait until the PS4 or PS5 for that as Football games are historically the worst looking of sports games since there is so much going on at once with 22 players on the field and constantly in view.
Krieger119 07-14-07, 02:38 PM Hope its true b/c I was rather impressed with the small footage I saw for Madden 08

just to be picky and a pain in the a**. i think basketball games are the hardest to recreate, especially with the athleticism of current players. a computer just can't effectivly interact the way players do in real life.
i think donkey kong is the greatest game ever
DONKEY KONG SUCKS!!
joeblow 07-15-07, 07:04 PM On basketball games... I agree. However I am amazed at how detailed the animation is in NBA Street for the PS3. The rules are arcadey, but the smooth moves are unmatched in any b-ball title.

It's apples and oranges. Basketball has the toughest animations to creates but Motion Capture has helped greatly in that regard. Collision detection and reaction is also pretty poor in NBA games, with players bouncing off each other like rubber balls.
Football games have the hardest overall graphics to create (in terms of making the game look closer and closer to a NFL Sunday HD Telecast) because the CPU and Video Card have to handle drawing 22 players, animating those 22 players, the individual AIs of all 22 players, while maintaining a constant 60 FPS. Not to mention things like field degredation, weather conditions, and other stuff like that you won't have in a basketball game.
In a basketball game, it only has to do that for 10. A baseball game has to do it for 18, but those 18 are never on the screen all at once and 60 FPS is not a requirment.
Thats also why the NBA and NFL Street games have awsome graphics and animations, it cuts the number of playes way down.
lilmarc1988 07-16-07, 12:55 AM still getting it for the 360. i think the 360 have better online. but i hope whoever get it for the ps3 they will have good online also

Gotta get the PS3 version, all my friends will be playing on there. The 60fps is just gravy.
Mindwarper 07-16-07, 12:58 PM Last year I got a xbox, a ps2, and a 360 version. This year it will just be the 360,unless there is a huge untapped ps3 online community playing madden. Most of my friends only have a 360. I think sony has better hardware this gen, but the games are lagging a bit.

Now that it is confirmed that the PS3 version will be 60fps, I think it will definitely be the version I want to pick up. I didn't like the feel of Madden on an Xbox controller and enjoy it much more with the PS style controllers.

Don't you have to pay for online on the X-Box though?
dpe8598 07-16-07, 04:32 PM Don't you have to pay for online on the X-Box though?
Yes, but some people think its worth it. IMO its not, which is another reason I would prefer PS3.
logicalnoise 07-16-07, 05:02 PM Don't you have to pay for online on the X-Box though?
yeah 5 bucks a month for 99% of the games. conisdering the features involved it's very much worth it for most people.

What "features" are you talking about. The only difference between Silver and Gold is that Gold lets you play online. In other words, you still get everything in marketplace for free with silver, but you can't play on line on the 360 without paying. What extra features are you talking about that you get for paying?
INcowboy 07-16-07, 05:41 PM Extra features like being able to invite friends into games, send text and voice messages to friends, faster downloads of demos etc...... Thee whole online experience on Xbox is 100% more enjoyable and worth every penny of the $45 a year I pay for it.

You get the downloads on the 360 for silver. Yes, I would like to be able to invite friends into games, but that alone is not worth 50 bux a year for me. I shouldnt have to pay to be able to play online games, so I won't. If Gold provided some additional content or downloads, I might be willing to pay for that, but paying to play online is BS. Ill stick with free online play.
Is anyone looking forward to Football 2k8 or whatever it's called being released tomorrow? I rented madden '07 for the ps3 and am glad I did, it was unbelieveably bad, and won't be buying another EA pos game till I see it's worth it..
Also, for those that play madden '07 for the ps2 on the ps3, how does it look? Does the game upscale it to 720p and properly display the image on a widescreen tv? Thanks.
Chodite 07-16-07, 06:11 PM Some folks at E3 were told by MADDEN producers, that MADDEN on the PS3 was unfortunately stuck at 30fps.
I am looking forward to All Pro Football but I will probably get Madden 2008 also. Madden 2007 for PS3 was NOT a Madden game. It was terrible and not just the frame rate. What Madden game doesn't have Madden in it? It was lacking in every area from the PS2 Madden 2007 game. I haven't played Madden 2007 for PS2 on the PS3 since the upscaling was added to the PS3 so I can't comment on that.
jkcheng122 07-16-07, 07:05 PM seeing the trailer on the E3 Sizzle download via PSN, i'm disappointed in the character models in madden. most of the players look far too big compared to their real life counterparts. seemed every receiver was Terrell Owens sized even with guys like Chad Johnson and Marvin Harrison. There was a shot of a Panthers that i believe is Steve Smith but looked nothing like him size wise. I won't be spending $60 on this game, was going to by my first PS3 game purchase too. will now wait for FF13 most likely.

Because it should be 60fps. It's only news when an easily-attainable goal cannot be hit by a console that is supposed to be "superior" in some way.
If people come back and say "whoops, we were confused", then most will ignore the story.
_Avarice_ 07-17-07, 12:18 PM So now, on neoGAF, someone claiming to be Bryan Intihar from Electronic Gaming Monthly states that Madden on PS3 is, in fact, locked at 30fps.
This is ridiculous. I've never seen so many hanging on a game's framerate!!

Moreover, the trolls are only interested in the story if it is negative against the PS3.

Oh man there was a dozen page thread about PGR "only" being 30fps, this is NOTHING!
joeblow 07-18-07, 02:10 PM The site admin has retracted (http://maddenwars.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=104&Itemid=2) his earlier story... PS3 Madden is only 30fps.
What is a deal breaker is the poor xbox 360 control scheme forced on us as well as the lack of co-op (which has been around since about mmm 1995)
Thsi looks like a bigger turd than Madden 07 which had the exact same flaws. The EA P3 forums are livid.

No, but those trolls are better fed ;) It goes both ways.

RE: control scheme
Now THAT will be a deal breaker for me, unless I can re-map every single button. Changing the traditional PS-Madden control scheme from '07 and having it not be fully customizable led to me sell Madden in two weeks time. I won't touch this game if that is the case
I guess now we know how well EA is going to work on titles that have exclusive pro licensing deals. Are sports games with pro exclusives going to go the way of the movie tie-in games?

That's a good question. I hope not. I think it's more an EA thing than an exclusive thing. I think their major sports titles have suffered a decline over the years. One game I have seen them make major strides in is FIFA. They've certainly caught PES in many respects and surpassed it in some.
I honestly was going to wait to get my football fix until Madden came out, but with all the negative reviews popping up about NCAA, I'm off to satisfy my urge with some APF 2K8. It looks too good to pass up and respected users on this site and others have given it a solid write up.
