Do you think that there are too many FPS'es coming to the market (on both Xbox360 and PS3) ?
While most console owners have only recently been exposed to this genre (unlike PC gamers) and seem to be enjoying the intensity/rush they get from these games, but I think that most of these new games will lack a good story and game play, since small studios can use generic engines (Unreal,Crysis, etc) to quickly get (mediocre) titles into the market.

This may play well for Sony and Nintendo since they have been able build a strong presence in multiple genres not just the recent craze of FPS games.

The FPS of today are like the 2d fighters of the 90s. The originals that pioneered the genre were great, but it's time to innovate and create new styles of play.

There are a lot of them because the software publishers think that's all the that's really wanted.

Unfortunately on the PS3, we have the platform that skews older, so we get more FPS than all the other platforms, and frankly I'm a little tired of it. We either get FPS or sports games, and they're not really my thing, so I long for RPG games or Little Big Planet, etc, etc.

imo the 360 is far worse than this than the ps3 (but thats partially because not as many games have come out yet for it).

its kinda funny because i almost instantly rate any game not fps a few points higher because they arent fps. ive gotten to the point where i cant play more than 2 fps's per year for an extended time because of boredom with the genre.

I still am kinda pissed that warhawk went to the ground (as good as it may be) because I was way way more interested in it as a flight only game. And a good flying game hasnt been done in a long time.

I still am a bit down on uncharted because we haven't gotten a good feeling yet as to how much is the shooting and how much is the adventure part. R&C, Heavenly Sword and little big planet are much more interesting to me because they arent shooters.

I'm a shooter fan don't get me wrong and recently there have been some REALLY good ones but the market right now feels flooded with FPS games and recycled sports games though. I'd love to see some more unique games like Viva Pinata and Little Big Planet come a long.

For the rest of 2006, we have UT3, Haze, and possibly COD4 for 1st person shooters. I dont think that's too many.

I don't think you can really have enough shooters. Especially if they are on the shorter side of things. Gears of Wars didn't take to long to beat, nor did Resistance Fall of Man. Prey was rather fun I thought with the wall walk. I like seeing how Developers bring new things to the genre. If they make them I'll play them.

UT3
Haze
COD4
BlackSite: Area 51
Frontlines: Fuel of War
Half-Life 2: Orange Box
...and so many more

Shall I go on?

hmm.....if it wasn't for shooters, I wouldn't be a gamer.

HL2: Ep. 2
Bioshock
UT3
Crysis
Gears of War
COD IV

My fall-gaming cue is considerable on the PC. I love the fact that UT3 on PS3 allows KBM, but its not enough. I can use a PC for so many more things. Linux apps that utilize PS3 hardware, are, well, lacking.

Did I mention Crysis ??? ;)

FPS is my thing and can never get enough of them but I want more quality FPS. The problem is people keep cranking out garbage to make a quick buck, take FEAR for the PS3 for example.

Please point me in the direction of where you bought that nifty time machine! ;) And there are many many more FPS than that coming out...many more.

I do think there are far too many "me too" shooters out there at the moment - but I won't say no to games like Half Life. As for the rest of these games...I'm not so sure.

I voted yes, ther are too many, but that answer is contingent on the idea that if those games were not being made, other interesting games would be made in their sted.

I'm going to see that there are too many, although we barely had any on the PS2. I think we need a few great ones like Resistance, UT3, CoD4, "hopefully" Killzone. No more of the terrible CoD3 and Medal of Honors....please!

What the PS3 really needs right now, is adventure and RPG games. Uncharted looks like its going to fit the adventure build....but we're still seriously lacking JRPGs. It sucks that Microsoft is getting 2 really good JRPGs this year (Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey maybe), while we get none :(. Hopefully strong sales will push Squenix and Atlus to create some more RPGs....oh, and Level 5 too :) (can't wait till White Knight Story).

Too bad those PC video cards cost $600 a piece. And of course, you can't do anything with only a video card.

Yea crysis is going to be a system killer for me. I'm so tempted to save up some money and build a new rig and include water cooling. Between my 360 and PS3 I think I will be fine for FPS and I would rather enjoy several good FPS on that then one on my PC. Especially since I have a 55" HDTV to play the 360 and PS3 on vs a 20" LCD for the computer. :D

 I guess you mean that you need some TV output for the PS3 correct ?
However, a PC video card without a computer, monitor,KB&M and in most cases an upgraded powersupply is useless.

A PS3 thanks to its virtual keyboard and web browser (and many other features) is quite capable. not to mention the ability to connect to remote (network) printers or run openoffice ( http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/products/ydl/ ).

So for $600 i think it is definitely worth it, even more so at $500.

Exactly. I can build a capable PC for around $600 (sans monitor). It won't be state of the art, but it can play modern games at reasonable settings.

Back on topic, though: I think there is too much focus on FPS games for both the 360 and the PS3. Frankly, I've never liked FPS games on consoles. I favor the keyboard+mouse control scheme on the PC, so I tend to avoid FPS games on consoles.

Oh I agree, one can buy a new 8800GTX but their P4 may be a bottleneck.

It's just like someone buying a next-gen console and using it on their 27" 4:3 CRT in 2.0 sound. The upgrade effect gets expensive, but it doesn't just apply to PCs. :p

Uncharted is my most anticipated game for this year. I like a good FPS but LOVE a good adventure game. I enjoyed RFOM and to a lesser extent RB6 - but I'm kinda tired of the FPS genre being the only games I'm interested in on the PS3. I'm not much into sports games and other than that - it's mainly FPS at this point. Uncharted can't get here soon enough

I would love to play crysis too, but there is now way I'm going to spend the major dough it would cost to upgrade my rig to a top flight video card (with directx10 support). There is no doubt, if you want to play this game smoothely, youll need a killer rig. I'm so sick and tired of upgrading my PC to play games and I'm also sick and tired of dealing w/ drivers and other isses. Thank goodness for the 360 and PS3.

Too bad those PC video cards cost $600 a piece. And of course, you can't do anything with only a video card.I don't quite look at it like that. I'm going to be building a new tower this fall regardless for reasons other than just gaming. Its easier for me to justify spending a few hundred bucks extra on a machine I can use for things other than just gaming.

An 8800GTS doesn't cost near $600, btw.

I love FPS, but I do agree there are "too many"...............I certainly won't own them all, but I do love that it gives me the ability to only choose the cream of the crop.

COD4 and KZ2 are the next ones on my list.

I'm not the biggest shooter fan.... but there are definetly a good number of them on my christmas list this year.

Halo 3, UT3, Bioshock, HL Ep2, TF2.

Note the common trend: no military or pseudo military style shooters. That stuff is so boring.
