View Full Version : I'm getting a PS3; any drawbacks to playing ps1/2 games on a ps3?
Sandman209 07-14-07, 11:05 AM I'm getting a $499 PlayStation 3 (the one with the emotion engine) and I'm wondering if there are any issues with older ps2 games on the ps3 like slow-down or general poor performance?
My friends and I still sometimes play old-school ps1 games like Worms and Twisted Metal and there are a *ton* of PS2 games I want to play (Resident Evil 4, Bully, Test Drive Unlimited, God of War 1&2, The Godfather, etc.). Would these games play just like on a PS2 (minus the rumble)?
I know it's kind of an odd question considering how powerful the PS3 is, but, would it be worth it to just hold onto my PS2 for this purpose? I'd be using a standard definition, non-widescreen tv.
(....By the way, this isn't a huge deal for me since I really look forward to the new PS3 games way more!)
Thanks!
I have not had any problems. I've played Madden, Tony Hawk's Project 8, Hot Shots golf 3 and Fore! and a few others that I'm forgetting right now. The only problems I've run across have been fixed in firmware updates. Some people have a problem that PS2 games won't fill a wide screen TV entirely. They leave 1" black bars on each side (the size depends on the TV, of course). I don't have a problem with that.
As long as you're getting the 60gb, there should be no problem. I play alot of old games, and they look great with the upscaling. Even a PS1 game that was a remake of an SNES game(FFVI) looked good. No stretching or jaggies, performance was great too.
PS2 games that are widescreen with progressive output support look great on the PS3.
nuclear_eclipse 07-14-07, 08:07 PM Even on my standard definition 32" TV, I have noticed a considerable increase in graphics quality when playing my PS2 games on the PS3. Things are generally much more readable now, along with the obligatory smoother textures and such. I couldn't be happier. In fact, the combination of improved PS2 visuals, combined with numerous discounts from the local Gamestop, prompted me to complete my Gran Turismo and Grand Theft Auto collections, so I picked up used copies of Vice City Stories, Liberty City Stories, and Tourist Trophy, and those were the mainstay of my PS3 enjoyment for the past month, until I just discovered the joy of Resistance online multiplay. :-P
spinksjinx 07-14-07, 09:46 PM ESPN NFL 2K5 plays like garbage it freezes and the audio is out of sync...Cant say its because of the ps3 because I experienced the same crap on the ps2 with that particular game.
Otherwise the rest that I have tried played flawlessly....
If you havent bought one already fish out a preowned 20gig it has the EE and is a fraction of the cost. My buddy just picked one up for $339.99 from Gamestop I believe.
rombullterrier 07-14-07, 09:46 PM Hold on to your PS2 until you make sure that all the PS2 games you want to play work satisfactorily on the PS3. For example, I haven't tried yet, but I understand that Guitar Hero 1 and 2 and the dance revolution games won't run on the PS3.

They didnt use to because of the controller needing an adapter I believe. But that has been fixed and now both work a-ok.
Mongoos150 07-15-07, 12:01 AM They look great for the most part - however IMO FFXII looks better on my PS2. Not sure why, but the picture is a bit less pixelated. (Something having to do with the upconversion).
I got rid of my ps2 since I have my ps3 and have no regrets at all. There are some minor things that happen that can get annoying though like the controller on ps3 sometimes will just lose control, I am not sure if this happens more if you have a wireless network running( I have one) but it happens to me maybe around once every 50 hours of play. Also you may miss no rumble on the ps3 with ps2 games.
EnderOSC 07-16-07, 01:57 PM What settings did you put your PS3 to for a better picture? I just got FFXII and I want to make sure I am seeing it in the best way. I think I turned on upscaling, but left the screen size at Normal as opposed to full (I didn't know if it would stretch it).
Are there any other settings that can be played around with to get the best picture possible?
Mindwarper 07-16-07, 05:07 PM I love the fact that my ps2 games look much better. The only minus I can think of is the lack of rumble. I have connected my ps3 to two ps2 for lan gaming. Works without problem. Atv2 is such a fun lan game.

For XII, at least (I believe), put the screen size to Full, and then in-game, actually enable the 16:9 option in the menu. If that doesn't work, as I've heard XII might have stretching issues, just go back and put it on Normal, and then do the 16:9 option in-game.
I used to think that PS2 upconverting is a great thing, but I've been playing God of War 2 this wek and I must say that I find the "native" picture - when you turn on the progressive scan (this disables upscaling) and enable wide screen - considerably better. If you turn on the smoothing then fonts are, well, smooth but the overall picture is much blurrier. Upsampling itself also doesn't seem to do much difference in this game plus it brings its own set of problems such as conflict between in-game "wide screen" mode and the "full/normal" setting in the upsampler. When upsampling there are black bars on all 4 sides of the screen (if your TV does 1:1 in 1080p) while there's only a little bit on left and right when running in 480p and letting the TV scale. I imagine the internal upsampler is worth it if the game does not support progressive scan or it's very jaggy or you have an older TV. At least the option is there so you have a choice - nothing to complain about.
The only compatibility issue I noticed is the intro FMV of Final Fantasy 6 (PS1 game) when using upsampling (but not without it). Even that might have been fixed in the latest firmware though.
This page should tell you the status of your PS1 and PS2 games on the current hardware EE equipped PS2s:

I've been clearing out my ten year backlog of games and so far every single PS1 and PS2 game has played flawlessly and look great upscaled to 1080p on my PS3.
EnderOSC 07-17-07, 04:47 PM I turned Upscaling on, Smoothing On, and set FFXII to 16:9 ingame. Looks good now, especially up close. Once it zooms out, its jaggies galore though... just need to get used to older games (I never owned a PS2).
Might have to pick up Shadow of the Colossus when I beat FFXII.
Anthony1 07-31-08, 02:58 AM I know this is an old thread, but I was wondering if we could get some updates on playing PS2 and PS1 games on the PS3. Here are a few questions I have:
1. If I have a DualShock 3, and I play a PS2 game that has rumble, does the controller rumble?
2. If I have a DualShock 3, and I play a PS1 game that has rumble, does the controller rumble?
3. By playing PS2 and PS1 games on my PS3, am I putting unnecessary wear and tear on my Blu Ray drive? I guess the same thing could be said for watching DVD movies or listening to music via a CD or whatever.
Any other oddities that people have noticed in regards to playing PS2 or PS1 games on a PS3?
joeblow 07-31-08, 03:19 AM 1. Yes. 2. Yes. 3. Of course not.
PS1 games pretty much work on any PS3 with little or no issues. PS2 games are up to 90% compatible on earlier PS3s. Check here (http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/CompatibleStatus)for the specific games you want to know about.
confidenceman 07-31-08, 06:53 AM I've actually had some strange graphical glitches and lockups on two of my PS1 games (Soul Reaver and Symphony of the Night), but those could just be a result of old, dirty discs.
They didnt use to because of the controller needing an adapter I believe. But that has been fixed and now both work a-ok.There's been no "fix" for the PS2 GH games. Some people claim to have found adapters that (mostly) work, but they generally have a couple of less-than-ideal flaws for serious GH players (lag, non-responsive buttons, non-functioning whammy bar, etc.). There have been a few recently released adapters, but these still have the same problems.
