It might not be the best looking HD DVD available, but it's quite a bit better than the standard DVD according to DVDTalk's review (http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=29126):

"Encoded with a VC-1 1080p transfer of its 1.85:1 image, Liar Liar sheds some much needed light on the decent previous standard definition transfer. Now, the hi-definition transfer isn't quite a slice of perfection. There's still a bit of grain that's visible in some instances. However, when directly compared to the Collector's Edition disc regarding color replication and detail, this HD transfer is a very sizeable step-up. And, like mentioned above, it's a more radiant transfer than the standard release. Some of the same imperfections squirm into this presentation, but the clarity of minor elements, skin tones, and a thoroughly enhanced range of depth makes this a winner. The extensive detail regarding small points like Carrey's business suit and Tilly's hair and clothing make this disc pop to a much grander extent. This isn't reference quality and nothing to write home about, but Liar Liar looks quite good."

I agree it's a fine disc. Not every title should look glossed over. Actually, I don't want any HD film glossed over. :) Universal did a good job with Liar, Liar. It's also a freakin hilarious movie! :D

How the hell does DVDTalk choose it's reviewers nowadays? This guy's watching his movies on a 32" LCD. I'm sure his display is VERY revealing...

I'm sure his display is VERY revealing...From my experience there, it seems as if the writers with the higher-end setups get first right of refusal. Everything else is divvied out from there. I'm not sure if that's any sort of official policy, but that seems to be the case.

If you're concerned about the lower-end setups some reviewers are using for high-def reviews at DVD Talk, I encourage you to post a message to the site's feedback forum (http://forum.dvdtalk.com/forumdisplay.php?f=4). Posting here isn't likely to get the attention of the right people.

Damnationdoormat: DVD Talk, for whatever reason, received two copies of Liar Liar to review. The first copy was reviewed by Don Houston, whose bio you linked to above. The other, and the one tlreddragon was referencing, is by Thomas Spurlin (http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/bio.php?ID=196&reviewID=29126).

So being better than the dvd is the minimum standard over there?
