I'm amazed its been out this long and people have started developing freeware and shareware for it.

Anyone think we'll see some home grown apps for the unit?

Seems like such a powerful unit that people would start doing things to take advantage of it.

With IP TV becoming more prevalent I wouldn't be surprised to see some IPTV apps.

Will also do you think Sony will start to really exploit PSN? Things like you watch a movie trailer and have the option to buy tickets, things like that.

What does a PS3 development system cost?

Yeah, I wish we could hear more about this. I'd really like to see some game construction kits sold. Sony had quite a few of those kinds of products available on both the PS1 and PS2 so hopefully we'll see something like this in the future.

You can do a lot already with the PS web browser- things like buying tickets and watching internet videos have been available since launch.

Their browser leaves a lot to be desired. I know you can do the normal web things but tying it into PSN would be nice.

Yet the PS3 web browser being on Opera gives a lot of benefit as well. It's so nice to be able to be in a game and then check back on a web forum or walkthrough site. Lots of cool stuff can be done with it.

And to be able to access web videos such as YouTube from the PS3 is really cool.

Hopefully never. Homebrew ruined the PSP and I think any tinkering with the PS3 will do the same

Homebrew on the PSP is totally different than officially sanctioned homebrew games. Homebrew on the PSP requires cracking the security, etc. If Sony releases an SDK for public use, then you will be able to create your own little games that run inside PS3 OS.

Sony has already said we'll be able to create our own games inside of Home. I hope they go a lot further than that. They have in the past and they certainly can for the PS3. I hope Little Big Planet is just the tip of the iceberg.

Eh? Homebrew didn't ruin the PSP. The PSP has other issues that limited its growth, but it wasn't homebrew that did it in. Even saying that I still think the PSP is a great system with plenty of good games on it. Homebrew didn't ruin the PS2 or the Xbox either.

I just don't find the image quality for the browser to be worth it. Maybe if I had a true digital display like a direct view 1080p LCD instead of a projection DLP it would be better.

I've played PC games on my TV and they look great, I've also played PC games on a Westinghouse 1080p LCD and they look great. Then I tried to use Windows for something other than gaming, on the DLP its tough to use, the LCD is just a giant monitor and looks fine.

Far easier for me to have my laptop sitting with me.

It'd be nice to maybe see some X10 apps for it....some audio tuning apps for it(like RoomEQ), things of that nature.

Someone wrote the folding app, did Sony?

I think the web browser image quality is very good, especially for YouTube videos on the web. On my LCD it's very readable, even text.

What I'm hoping that Sony adds to the browser is true zooming (rendering the page at the zoom level, not just upscaling the non-zoomed image). Given how Sony, Adobe and Opera are working together on the PS3 web browser, I hope we'll see this added in a firmware update.

Since you can comfortably browse the web with either a Sixaxis or a BD remote, the PS3 has many legs up on putting a PC in the living room. But if you've got a laptop on your couch, you're probably better off using that to surf.

Sony and Stanford(?) collaborated on it. Probably Sony worked on the UI and glue while the folding project wrote the math.
