I just picked this up yesterday at Fry's; pretty good deal. Main idea is to back up my laptop, desktop and my wife's mac.
it works pretty well for that.

The thing is it also has a built in UPnP server but I can't make it to work with my PS3. The PS3 does see it as a upnp server but it can't see any media on it even though i believe it's configured properly. I have read the instructions on maxtor's website (piece of cr** instructions anyway)

Has anybody had any experience with this device? any luck making it serve pictures and other stuff?

thanks for the help

my guess, and its just a guess, that the HDD lacks the video transcoder that say your computer would have when doing a UPnP. the PS3 only seems to support Mpeg-2. as for the audio, you got me it should work.

I got it to work. It's a little cumbersome but it does work for pics and music no problem. 80% of the use I wanted to give it is taken care for (awesome for family visits and slideshows of the baby :)
It's not as good for video as, since you point out, lacks transcoding capabilities.

Anyhow, thanks for reading in and trying to help :)

How did you make it to work for music? I got the same problem as you (see the server but no music files shown).
Thanks.

OK, how do you get these two to work together?

I keep getting a "media server disconnected" message. The media server shows up in the xbar menus but I can't see any images or videos. And I keep getting the damn 'media server disconnected message.

Could it be the switch connecting the two?

Well, I moved the Maxtor Storage II to a mini-hub where the PS3 is and it now seems to work. I'm not sure if it is the mini-hub or the Ethernet switch that was causing the problem, but putting the PS3 & the Maxtor Storage II on the same mini-hub seemed to fix things.
