This is simply a thread for the fun of it. Listed below are films by writers or directors where HD DVD has a content advantage. There are also a couple of other, more obscure categories mentioned at the bottom. All of these films are either out or have firm release dates. I would like to keep this thread as free from flaming and trolling as possible. This is a fun thread and although it points out some areas where HD DVD has an advantage it is not intended to draw the ire of Blu-ray supporters or Format Neutral forum members.

If I made a mistake or if other members have anything to add post it in this thread and I will make corrections and additions as necessary.

HD DVD is the high brow choice :D

When you want to watch cinematic treasures like Crank or Ghost Rider you have Brand X.

When you want to watch classics and great moviemaking you choose the "red" pill. Nice list...many of those movies will be mine.

Real nice list man!

I can see we have similar taste in movies. I think I will be picking up a good half of those films at some point.

I also didn't realize how many great imports are out there. Probably pick up some of those too (especially Clockwork Orange). Thanks.

Um yeah...that's the spirit. Seriously mentioning the Dystopian England advantage for HD DVD was a goof on my part, but it is a content advantage. :p

I had to get rid of Phillip K. Dick and J.K Rowling because of recent announcements.

I would like to thank Paramount for allowing me to add Phillip K. Dick back to the writer's section. There are a many good movies based on his stories including Minority Report in addition to those I listed above. There are more films based on his stories than the likes of Anne Rice, Dan Brown or Clive Barker and yet no one seems to have heard of him. Needless to say I love his work.

all my HD and BD DVDs are of new movies. I have yet to but an HD version of say a 20 to 30 YO movie. For those that have, how is the PQ? Is it worth it? Or is it it just as god to by the SD version and upscale it?

The oldest movie I've got is Enter The Dragon (1973) and it looks great. The colors are bright and saturated, the image is crisp. They did a great job with it. Still not Hot Fuzz caliber, but great never the less. Not all movies get this treatment, and not all movies will have a perfect master. So check the reviews first. But if done well the movies will be full HD, much better than any upscale could ever hope to be.

Film has a lot of detail, so if it's cleaned up and digitized right, it'll look even better than it did in the original theater release, imo. I bought Forbidden Planet, and I think that movie probably never looked that good. But, of course, it won't look like films that are recent and filmed with digital equipment.

LOL. People can grab up a few cinematic treasures like this exclusively on HD DVD (thank goodness)

The 40 Year Old Virgin
Knocked Up
Mercury Rising
Billy Madison
Half Baked
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
How the Grinch Stole Christmas
The Nutty Professor
Mallrats
The Watcher
The Hitcher (2007)
Feast
School For Scoundrels
Wolf Creek
You Me and Dupree
2 Fast 2 Furious
End of Days
The Bone Collector
Doom

Face it both formats have their dogs and classics ...and one person's dog is another person's guilty pleasure.

Some of the most spectacular examples of HDM are very old films. I find it amazing how very old films can look as good as they do. Casablanca, The Searchers, The Adventures of Robin Hood, Grand Prix and Forbidden Planet are all very good examples of great looking HD-DVDs.
