Hints
Depending on the data type, some files may not be playable or some control panel options may not function during playback.
Some video files distributed over the Internet have playback restrictions. For details, contact the content provider.
When using a USB adaptor to play video files, you may need to use a USB adaptor (not included) that supports copyright-protection features (to play copyright-protected files).
Note the following points when playing AVCHD (.m2ts) format files.
- To play files saved on a digital video camera (of a type that records to a hard drive) connected by a USB cable, you must select the (USB Device (Camcorder)) icon, press the button, and then select [Display All] from the options menu.
- To play files saved on storage media such as an SD Memory Card, select the icon for the storage media under (Video), press the button, and then select [Display All] from the options menu.
- The order in which video files are displayed on the XMB™ may differ from the order the videos were taken on the digital video camera.
- Long duration video files (of file size 2 GB or more) are automatically divided and displayed as multiple scenes (files).
- Dolby Digital 5.1 Ch audio is output using Linear PCM 2 Ch.

Another HUGE gripe is that video stored on your playstation cannot be organized. Say you have 100 episodes of Seinfeld, 100 episodes of 24, and another 100 episodes of South Park on your drive - there is *no* way to create folders for these files. I am still mystified and perturbed that this simple feature hasn't been implemented (as I am putting a 250GB drive in my PS3, and have over 100GB of video files).

"- Dolby Digital 5.1 Ch audio is output using Linear PCM 2 Ch."

hmmm, does that mean that dolby digital is downsampled to stereo, or that the data is transported as PCM, and I need a reciever to decode the 2ch PCM stream back into DD5.1???

I have tons of MPEG 2 home videos that I play on my PS3 via an external HDD. But I am moving to Sweden and will be getting a PAL PS3.

Will my videos still play via the external HDD on a PAl PS3 even though they are MPEG 2 home videos shot with an NTSC Sony handy cam?

I have been able to find out nothing regarding this.

The videos are in the original format recorded by my handy cam, which is MPEG 2. But does MPEG 2 have an NTSC and a PAL version?

I don't think it cares about the FPS of videos. I have a bunch of Swedish DVDs that my US PS3 won't play. But if you pull the video off the disc I'm pretty sure it will play them. I can't remember if I tested these as mp4 or mpeg2. My problem is still the subtitles. I'm just not willing to burn those into the video.
