View Full Version : ncaa football 2008
thebigdaddye 07-15-07, 04:45 AM i have the game and have played it all day. i suggest renting it first. the game could have ben great ,but ea really messed up. the pass blocking is terrible, the game plays more like madden (slower) then ncaa. speed button is kind of a joke. the game looks great ,but i feel this game is worth about $20. it reminds me of the 2k football games in a way and i hated them. i guess i will be getting the ps2 version. oh well. just an fyi alot of people that have the game seem to like it, i don't YOU may find you like it, but i would suggest renting. ea really needs to work on this games blocking, the speed of the game, the play calling screen and a few other things. now i know why kirk herbstreit stated on the radio he still prefers the ps2 version, now i know why. oh in case you don't believe i have the game here is a link to a highlight i saved from the game. http://www.easportsworld.com/#video-802/HOME/429 oh i forgot to add that sometimes the D will just stand in space and not even try to tackle as you will see in the highlight video of me running back a kick off for a td.
spinksjinx 07-15-07, 08:13 AM The AI has always been stupid in majority of football games it either goes 2 ways...Either they are stupid or flat out cheap.
I hate the new play calling system but its still light years ahead of the way 2k does it..
Did you notice any frame rate issues? It was recently announced that the PS3 version of Madden would be running at 60fps like the 360 version but that NCAA would remain at 30fps.
instantpop 07-15-07, 11:58 AM Yikes. I counted at least 3 Louisville guys who could have tackled you on that return but just plain watched you walk by. That's brutal. It looks like a visually amped version of a PS2 game with no attention to AI what-so-ever. That's brutal.
I'm not jumping on any football games this year until I see some reviews. The days of static computer controlled guys is over for me. After playing NBA 2K8, I expect a bit of realism. I didn't see much in that clip you just showed. Sure looked pretty though! LOL.
spinksjinx 07-15-07, 01:21 PM God that game looks great (at least from the clip)...
The AI looks stupid as hell they literally turned around put their back towards you on the side...You shouldnt have made it through that group of guys but hence the dumb AI. What difficulty was that on?

thebigdaddye 07-15-07, 03:46 PM What difficulty level were you playing?
all american , the sliders helped some. as far as the frame rate you don't notice any issues with it being 30 fps, it just seems the whole game itself is slower then the ps2 version and more like madden. it's not all bad ,but the bad outweighs the good in my opinion.
snookalo 07-15-07, 04:57 PM I thought this game didn't come out until the 17th?
thebigdaddye 07-15-07, 07:10 PM I thought this game didn't come out until the 17th?
it does if you buy it at a retail chain like gamstop, eb games , walmart ect.. mom and pop stores can sell it whenever they want and that's how i got mine.

#2 - It's cool that you can save your highlights online like that.

what you didn't get the memo? ohio state is the only big ten team that cheats and trust me they are very good at it. this story is a few years old i would put money on it that nothing has changed see link http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=1920867

You may want to take a look at what Illinois did this recruiting season before you make that claim!

Just out of curiosity, where did you hear this about Madden? All the reports I've read stated that both NCAA and Madden 2008 for the PS3 where running at 30 fps. This would be an exciting development.

an espn trashing OSU? how original...
seriously, if you believe any of that tripe... not even michigan deserves to have you as a fan.
gamble1177 07-17-07, 05:57 AM got the game love it only one problem though. optical sound from my ps3 to my reciever does not work with this game. it works with every other game, all my brays and dvds. it just doesnt work with ncaa08 i got no idea what the problem is. in order to get sound i have to hook up the red/white cables setup my audio again and go from there. then set it back up for optical when im done with the game. gonna call ea tomorrow after work and see what they say about it. other than that the game runs awesome gameplay seems well paced. dmac and jones on arkansas do fumble a little more than i would like them too but whatever they are fast and kick ass.

What? This is very disconcerting. Please keep us up to date on this.

Try changing the audio settings of your PS3. If you have it set to output bitstream, change it to PCM or visa versa. It could just be that the PS3 is having a bit of a hiccup in decoding the audio from the disc.

Just to provide perspective, my sound output via optical works fine. The game is actually encoded in DTS, which is a bit different than usual. Does your receiver support DTS?

We only forget because no one at Michigan has cared about the basketball team in about 10 years. ;)
It is fairly remarkable that OSU got away with the whole Clarett thing without even a slap on the wrist. Man, I think that guy was the biggest waste of talent in all of sports. A Sure fire 1st round draft pick to be becomes a washed up looser serving hard time.

If the defense can hold up this year, they will be right in thick of it at the end of the season again.
Q of BanditZ 07-17-07, 01:20 PM Did you notice any frame rate issues? It was recently announced that the PS3 version of Madden would be running at 60fps like the 360 version but that NCAA would remain at 30fps.
I'm not sure if this counts for anything, but here's my roughly hour's worth of first, raw impressions. I was having a chat with someone and it went like this:
Someone be sure and post impressions All Pro and NCAA College Football.
Also, please correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I hear the refresh rates on most newer hdtv's render the 30fps vs 60fps debate a mute point. Saying that the human eye will not detect much, if any difference between the 2. As long as it's smooth and the animation is good, who cares about the difference?
I do and I'm noticing it now on NCAA 2008. I guess.
You will too and so will just about everyone else. It's not refresh rate it's actual frames per second. 60 vs. 30 makes a big difference, even on less than cutting edge hardware.
My TV is the CRT tube KD34XBR960 from Sony. The last great tube, as it were. It can do 720p and 1080i.
I was in the store this morning and there were two Ps3 owners who had bought the game at midnight last night and played theirs and then went over to a friend's house who had the 360 versions of the game. To their angst and chagrin, they reported a "night and day" difference in terms of controls, responsiveness, and "fluidity."
Obviously I didn't want to believe this, despite the earlier 1up article in the back of my mind, so I picked up my two football games this morning for the PS3.
I'm about an hour into NCAA 2008 right now and believe me: I'm the LAST person who wants to notice anything wrong here, but I've noticed a certain sluggishness and lack of responsiveness to the controls that I don't care for at all. It's noticeable. It's cost me on several plays where normally anyone would get it done. Keep in mind: I'm used to playing these games on PS controllers anyways, so it's not like I have any serious learning curve here.
There's a certain "crispness" I'm used to with these games that I'm not feeling right now with this one. I can't quite put my finger on it, so my first guess is the fps thing.
FWIW, on the PS3, you only get 720p on NCAA as well whereas the 360 versions go all the way to 1080i and p. And 60 fps instead of 30 fps.
I'm going to keep cracking at this, but yes, I'm suspecting that frames per second do make a difference and yes, you will notice it and feel it.
I hope some people who try both versions hit this thread before long.
Put it like this: I don't have the frame of reference to know what this game looks and feels like at 60fps. That being said: Would I still notice something anyways? Would it matter, or should I be at "ignorance is bliss?"
gamble1177 07-17-07, 05:31 PM if it was a problem with DTS it should not work over the regular red/white audio cables right? it wouldnt work with anything. i dunno i changed some audio settings last night and nothing worked im gonna mess with it some more in a bit after i eat and call.......ea............ill let yall know how it turns out next year.
tongyang 07-17-07, 07:47 PM To the people who have played this game, I wanted to confirm that you cannot have 2 people playing on the same team?
To me this is a dealbreaker...
gamble1177 07-17-07, 07:50 PM yep thats right no more coop. however i did fix the optical sound issue. it was the DTS i disabled it in my sound options and optical works fine.
Spartan60 07-17-07, 08:14 PM Went to the local Target to pick up game. Told they were being sent back. The clerk did not know what the problem was. Didn't have time to check other stores.
todrigo 07-17-07, 10:05 PM One thing I noticed that I think really takes away some creativity is the man in motion. It is now built into some plays and the motion man runs after the "X" press but before the snap, it can cause delays of game if you don't know what is going on, but it also means that if it is one of your favorite plays you can not decoy it at all. Some may have viewed the motion as a cheap/cheat but it's a big part of the deception game and it's a big part of Husker Football.
I've got some opinions on other aspects of the game too but I'm going to wait until I have played a few more games before to share those.

Personally, the last time I played a football game was on the original XBox. Not much of a fan until Superbowl time, but I figured that I may try out one this year, especially on the PS3 if I can.
I will just wait until Madden is released before I give it a try. Hopefully, I don't have to be a football expert to actually play the game.
I tried the NCAA demo and although it seemed to work well, I figured I show try out another football game.
uqmoore 07-18-07, 03:18 PM What's the appeal of the NCAA Football game? I always assumed it's basically like Madden accept for the teams of course and some specific college rules and college plays. Do NCAA Football purchasers usually buy Madden too?

With that said....the 'skers are gonna be SICK the next few years. Purify needs to keep his ass outta trouble, and with Paul Niles and the new QB's they're constantly bringin in, we're gonna be bck in the hunt for a nat'l title!

I've always liked NCAA more because the speed is about 2-3x faster than most madden games. I like that I can pick Central Louisana Tech and murder someone with one of the top 25 teams if I am really good.

I'm with you 100% there. The Huskers will always be my team, but they'll never be the Cornhuskers of my childhood. We're on the rise again now, hopefully it is the upward climb to a new dynasty.

/Sorry to threadjack/
I don't think Purify is ever going to get back on the team. I believe the "indefinite" suspension will eventually end in him being let go from the team. He was a good player, but from what I've heard from friends in Lincoln...that kid is a jackass and is going to get in big trouble for those assault charges. As the story was told to me…. He started a fight, got kicked out of the bar, went outside and jumped the fence in the beer garden to get back into the bar, he was on top of the guy he was fighting and that dude’s girl came over and tried to get him off of her boyfriend…so he turned and punched her. Eventually the cops came and arrested him (but he took a couple swings at the cops too). I’m not saying it is ok to hit some dude’s girl or anything, but it was the middle of a fight so I’m not going to make that a big deal. BUT, having cops there to arrest you and swinging on a bunch of armed officers? That is just a new level of stupid. The guy he got into a fight with was an off duty bouncer that worked at another bar. He took one of Purify's friends fake IDs a couple nights earlier. That is why he started a fight with him...cause he did his job. I count Purify as another jackass with more physical talent than brains. If Bill didn’t put up with Incognito (and he could have used the talent more then)…I don’t think he’ll let Purify back on the team. You never know though…it may all depend on what the fans think and how much heat he would get. “Assault” is pretty vague and I’ve only heard this version of the story from friends. Anyway, go skers.

I've put a couple of hours into the 360 version, and have been fortunate enough to A/B with the PS3 version at my house. I own a PS3, but decided on the 360 based solely on the ability to keep my unified friends list and the 60 fps. A buddy of mine only owns a PS3 and therefore bought that version--he brought it over and we were easily able to A/B by simply switching inputs on my Denon receiver and running the consoles simultaneously. FWIW--I've owned every NCAA/Madden title since I can remember.
Graphics--The games are identical at a stand-still. Yes, the 360 is 1080i and the PS3 is at 720p...but there is absolutely no discernible difference to my eyes or anyone else's that was along for the ride with us. The texture detail seems to be turned down this year compared to previous versions and replaced with that ever popular plastic-shrink wrapped look. This is more noticeable in certain uniforms versus others--LSU purple uniforms were where I first noticed it. However, in return they bumped the AA and we have essentially ZERO jaggies along with the boost in fps for the 360 crowd. Alot of hoopla has been made about the poor grass texture in the game--honestly, I do see what you guys are talking about, but it's not a big deal to me at all (in fact, I may not have even noticed it if I hadn't been scouring the net for early reviews). In their defense, however, in one of the cut scenes where the camera panned out to the end of the stadium and close to the ground, I did notice that the grass there was a horrific blocky untextured green.
As for the 30 fps (PS3) vs 60 fps (360) debate, this was a different story and the real reason for my buddy bringing his copy over. In short, yes, there is a difference and yes it is obvious to my eyes. Yes, this year toned down their graphical detail in return for less jaggies and a higher fps--and yes, the trade-off is clearly worth it. It just looks so natural now. The animations are smoother, the game feels more responsive, the whole flow of the game feels more life-like at 60 fps. It runs with a sleek butteriness that previous versions have lacked. Going A/B to the PS3 to run a few plays after watching the same teams in the same stadium makes you feel like your watching a less refined older version of a game. If I had never seen NCAA at 60 fps, I probably wouldn't have noticed it that much, but when you can compare the two it's a different story. As to exactly why the PS3 ended up with half the frames, I dunno--but I do know that that sucks.
Audio--One step forward, eighteen steps back. What....The...F....were they thinking. The announcing has been horrendous thusfar. I can complete a play and be back in a huddle at the play calling menu only to hear "Now it's 2nd and 20. Ball is snapped. He better hurry. Oh...and a pickup of 5 on the play." It can be so delayed that its comical at times. Granted, this doesn't happen every time, but it'll happen multiple times a game. It could have also been a fluke observation (certainly not enough time to draw any concrete conclusions yet), but the PS3 version seemed to do this less. I don't know if that's a function of the faster cell being able to compute when to start talking and when to STFU faster, but we did notice less on PS3 games.
Gameplay--Again, the monkeys at EA choose to leave out same team co-op play (a FAVORITE feature of mine), but everything else feels more refined here. The game seems to play faster this year as opposed to the bloated feel that previous next-gen versions have been plagued with--almost like they're going in more of a 2k games direction. Either way, it's a welcome change and adds to the pace of the game. Animations are first rate this year. Gang tackling looks nice and there's almost no noticeable difference going from full sprint to getting tackled--it looks very fluid.
Online--Haven't tried it yet.
HD_Lantern 07-18-07, 09:47 PM Question: I know that the NCAA doesn't allow for the use of actual college player names in the game, but are the players in the game modelled after real players? That is, for each team, are the players in the game based on the actual roster of players for the upcoming year, but just without their actual names listed? Or are the players just purely fictional with no ties at all to real players?
roland6465 07-18-07, 10:19 PM ^ they are based on stats
Can anyone please tell me what the F constitutes "excessive delay" on the PS3 online game? I have attempted 4 games, got booted 4 times, have 4 losses for close games I never finished, and a 100% disconnect rating.

Supposedly EA didn't have enough time to get to know the PS3's hardware well enough. I think that's a load of BS myself and yes, I know that Sony themselves could do more to reach out to third parties to prevent nonsense like this.
I didn't get a chance to A/B for nearly as long or ideal of a situation, but I've had the PS3 version here at my house since yesterday and it's good enough and all that...but then I tried the 360 version for about 20 minutes today and my findings more or less match yours. I really was taken aback by the difference.
Your bolded statement is dead on. I'm sorely tempted to make a chance except I currently do not own a 360 after having had terrible luck with two of them last year.
Stupid question: I don't suppose a firmware update could come out for PS3 users to "enable" 60 fps could it?
Pikasauce 07-18-07, 11:01 PM I don't own a 360 so I think I'll just rent this one and see how I like it.
Can anyone tell me how the overall gameplay and feel of the game compares to Madden 07?

Yes, they are based on real players.
so's your face 07-19-07, 02:51 AM that's why ann arbor was rated one of the best places to live. not 1 ohio city made the list. i live in dayton (what a crap hole and c-bus is not much better).
where exactly is ann arbor on this list??? i mean, i see columbus (third row, halfway down), obviously a typo, but no ann arbor...
http://top100.relocate-america.com/
all of this is just football smack... no need to get angry or a hater, if i lived in dayton i'd want out of ohio too. and as for so few top livable cities in ohio - it's because toledo brings the value of everything else in the state down... way down. why do you think we fought a war over it, for possession? hell no, it was a "you take it!" "no you take it!" "no you take it!" kind of war! ;)
it's typical buckeye class all the time here in ohio or anywhere a buckeye is present... i still love the look on all the buckeye fans faces as they showed the crowed at the bcs national champion game.
at least you're a classy meeechigan fan. at least i can say i rooted for um in the rose bowl and felt bad for you guys.
but you're right, i guess it would be better to get destroyed in the rose bowl than destroyed in the national championship game...
if you can't have a sense of humor about your own team then just keep queit and don't give the respectful michigan fans a bad name. i can laugh at the jokes and take the jabs, but you guys need to lighten up on the s*** talk... especially if you don't check your facts!
let's not ruin this thread anymore with our rivalry because i'm pretty sure those not in our region who are interested in playing or buying the game don't care to see the thread watered down with our bickering!
Conspiracy* 07-19-07, 09:53 AM Im pretty disappointed with my purchase. Maybe its because I havent played an NCAA game since 02, but theres a lot wrong with this game. Im sure I have a pretty rough time ahead of me learning how to play again but when did the boost button move to a trigger? Why does it feel like I have to hold down the O button for a half a sec before my guy spins? Why cant I see him trying to stiff arm people? The controls just feel off Again I dont know if this is just me, lacking having played an NCAA game in 5 years or what.
Does anyone else notice like when you're in the trophy room and the "welcome to ncaa 08" scrolls across the screen, that it skips and blurs? Its happening with pretty much all the moving words. Also the loading screen shows the controls for certain things in game like rushing. All the words look blurry.
I jumped straight into the campus legend mode, the graphics dont really look good at all in the version, the graphics on the regular games look a lot better. I dont really know why they would be different
In the end, once I get better, Im sure I'll have some fun playing this. Either that or trade it in for madden and hope its better. But what it comes down to for me is that this game lacks any kind of polish. It feels and looks very rough. If this is what NCAA, and I, have come to be then I guess its best for us to part ways for good.

That last part might be the 30fps biting you in the ass vs. the 360's 60 fps. I've noticed a little bit of that myself: A lack of crisp responsiveness at times that's actually cost me on plays where it normally would not.
Beyond that, though: You do know that you can customize the controls, yes?
If you really want the X button to be your sprint button again, you can do it.

There's been some simillar complaints like that floating around. Slight lag issues, things of that nature.

I guess so.
I can't believe how long it's taking for reviews of a big title like this to come out. Game Informer is the next after 1up to finally get a review out there.
They gave this an 8/10 and lazily copied and pasted the same generic review for both the 360 and PS3 versions. They make no mention of any comparisons or 30 vs. 60 fps issues (worthless) but they do mention having some menu, depth chart lag and such, which I've noticed a little bit of myself.
Dakanez 07-19-07, 11:19 AM The one thing i noticed was playing with a friend play selection you know extacly what play each of you are doing which is pretty dumb at least on 07 you seen three plays and you didnt know which one he chose but when they highlight the play and you hit X to chose all plays that doesnt work so well..

It's only dumb if you don't hide your playcalling.
You can hide the playcalling and no one would have a clue what you called.
Not to mention in NCAA 07 for the PS2 You may see 3 diagrams, but there is actually 6 plays you can call from that screen.
_Avarice_ 07-19-07, 11:34 AM Can ALL buttons be mapped to control whatever you like?
I despise the 360's control configuration and can't figure for the life of me why that was forced in last year's Madden. Previously, only some controls could be changed....
zoman504 07-19-07, 12:40 PM Thought I'd post up some pics, personally I love this game and its by far the best college football game made. I think people tend to forget that its simply a football game, thats it. Sure, I agree that they should've added in more stuff, but playing this game on my sammy looks amazing. This is the first year I purchased it for a next gen system and it blows away my ps2 version from last year, I even switched back to compare. It does take time to get used to, I played the demo on my 360 and wasnt sure what to think, but after a few games of the full version on my ps3 I can say its def football at its best so far. A hell of a lot better, even just at 30fps on the PS3.
Conspiracy* 07-19-07, 01:04 PM Ya I know you can map the buttons but I figured I'd try it as it was intended for a while. Everyone that plays 360 seems to like turbo on the trigger so I'd try it that way.
I guess I'll just have to play on the 360 and compare the two. If this is how its going to be, with the ps3 slightly behind the 360, its going to really piss me off.
This game is the same crappy 360 port they tried to shovel us with Madden 2007, They left out key features like Co-OP (like the did in Madden 2007. This fetaure has only existed in every college football game since Bill Walsh 1995 for SNES.
They ought to be ashamed to put this product out its a disgrace. The players all look the same size and feel like polar bears skating accross the field.
2 thumbs down.

2 thumbs down.Hmm, we must be playing different games. Players all the same size? hardly. The no co-op mode sucks, but really isnt that big of deal, and with all the complaints im sure itll be in next years version. This game is nowhere near the poor quality madden was, its almost an entire different game. Sounds like you havent even played it yet, just jumping on the bandwagon, which is cool with me, your the one missing out on a great game. If you notice, most people stating this game sucks are people who havent played football games in a few years, the games have changed people, the controls are different, the setup's different, accept it or dont pick it up. I find it very hard to believe anyone who actually enjoys the game of football would not find this game pretty damn good. For those of you who dont like the game, just return it and pick up a box of tissues for all your whining.

okey dokey...
Pretty sure osu beat miami in 2002 for the title, and whooped texas's ass last year. Let's see, Michigan beat the **** out of notre dame last year. What team do you represent, unless its the gators you can't talk because osu would've killed you last year. And what's Michigan ranked right now, #2, thats what i thought. Big Ten a crap conference, please, move along son.
Just to give you some background I have been playing college football and madden every year since its inception (likely you where in diapers). Although back then tecmo >madden.
Luckily I only rented Madden 2007 last year. I already returned the ps3 version for the ps2 version of ncaa 2008. I spend 500 bones on next gen system and I have to buy ps2 products to enjoy the game, this is ridculous. I did it last year with Madden as well.
For the record I play Co-Op 90% of the time (and have for the last 12 years) so this game is completely unacceptable as was Madden 2007.
My buddy and I run option offenses with one user qb and one rb, and have always had a blast with NCAA which is why this is so diappointing.
Not to mention no slide protection (why leave this out makes no sense) and the default control set to XBOX no ps2. All EA had to do was take NCAA 2007 for ps2 and slap some better graphics on it and they couldnt even get that right.
sammycasey17 07-19-07, 03:39 PM There is really no excuse not to include co-op this year. EA had plenty of time to implement into this year and once again they left it out :(

I could tell you were playing on a Sammy because in that last pic you can see the "bowing" that causes the stat bar on the bottom of the screen to bend upwards at the end of the screen. OSU only gets beat down by the SEC... 0-?   consistency BABY!!!
OSU has a winning record against against all other conferences.
don't know um's OOC record, but i'm pretty confident they didn't amass the highest winning % in college FB by losing to OOC teams.
and hate 'em or love 'em, you have to respect the traditions of 2 of the top 5 winningest progams in the history of the sport.

Actually i just took the picture off center, theres no bowing at all, the black on top is the top of the tv, not the screen. The set is honestly flawless after having to upgrade my board/fw.

If you run co-op 90% of the time, then i would agree, leaving out co-op would suck ass. Stating all EA had to do was take ps2 version and slap better graphics on it is ridiculous, you must not program software, this game had to be built from the ground up for the next gen systems.

I too have been playing since inception of video football games.
I've played them all, going back to Atari and Intellevision.
I'm 40 now so I can tell you I wasn't no where near in diapers.
I not only buy/play Madden and NCAA every year, I play both gens of it. I did prefer the NCAA 07 PS2 version because it was the better football game even though I still owned the next gen version.
I've already put a few hours into both generations of NCAA 08 (360 and PS2 version).
The Blocking system in NCAA Next gen is new so apparently they didn't feel a need for slide protection. I miss calling it, just out of habit, but I've yet to see a play where I said "This play would have turned out better if they had slide protection."
The NG version is also missing the new QB evade from the CG version,
However, this game is far from crap.
I don't see how any true football fan could not like the NG version of NCAA 08 no matter what you played before it.

That being said: Do you like curren gen 08 or next gen 08 better this year and why or why not?
It would be hard for me to go back down to PS2 this year myself.
snookalo 07-19-07, 05:28 PM There are a couple things I really miss, my own playbook, and formation substitutions. Oh, and it being faster. NCAA always seemed faster than madden, now it seems just as bulky and slow. The new play calling kinda sucks too. If I wanted Madden I would buy Madden. Really disappointed. :(
gamble1177 07-19-07, 05:44 PM yea i would love to edit the players that are in on certai formations. also it seems like some of the buttons are a little too sensitive. mainly the pitch button you just have to look at it and it pitches. also it seems like just looking at any button while lined up o the dline will make the player jump. on the man in motion i dont know how i did it but i hit a button that canceled the man in motion on one of the formations where he comes in motion before the ball is snapped. game seems to be a little bit harder than 07. that and penalties dont get called nearly as much. seems like they are making you use the r1 when you are running as dmac and jones on arkansas seem to fumble a lot unless i remind myself to cover the ball. jukes, stiff arm, and spin moves all seem to be on a slight delay but its nothing you cant get use too. the animations in the game look awesome as depending on how close you are to players will change the spin move animation. sometimes the player looks to lose balance. overall im pleased with the game its leaps and bounds better than ps2 07.
thowe21 07-19-07, 05:58 PM I'm kind of bummed that didn't make it for the PSP, I was looking forward to getting it since I'm away from home alot. Then I noticed that EA never did bring this title out for the PSP.
zoman504 07-19-07, 06:45 PM Here's a few more pics, if you love football you'll most likely enjoy this game a lot. If this is your first next-gen football experience, like it was mine, it does take time to get used to it. some features may not be there that you liked from past versions, but when it comes down to the actual game experience its still fun as hell. If your skeptical then i suggest renting it or going to a friends. Please atleast give it a try, dont just state the game sucks without atleast doing that first, you may find you still like it. Personally, i find this to be the best football game ive ever played. Sure tecmo bowl and other classics were great, but honestly the graphics and experience of this game are pretty damn good.

That being said: Do you like curren gen 08 or next gen 08 better this year and why or why not?
It would be hard for me to go back down to PS2 this year myself.
I buy both gens because I get a current gen copy to keep at the fire station and the next gen is for home.
I'm really impressed more by the next gen version this year because it was the most improved.
They really closed the gap this year between the 2 in features and game play.
Playing a lot of current gen makes you really appreciate the graphics of the next gen version.
I'm not sure I can really say I like one better yet, however the next gen version is the one I'm finding myself more excited about playing.

Closing Comments
For the title's first steps upon the PS3, this isn't the kind of debut you'd hope to see for NCAA Football. Running at 30 frames per second and only 720p makes this a graphically inferior title to the 360 version of the game, which is truly unfortunate, since the game is quite good otherwise. If the title was released a month or two later, this could have been an impressive or even great game, but instead, it has to settle for being a good one.

I agree that the game could have been even more impressive, but i'll take a solid 30 fps over just a peak of 60 fps. I compared the 360 demo i have to the ps3 full version and the ps3 runs a lot smoother. Maybe the demo's not as good as the full? I dunno, but the game just felt a lot better on my ps3 vs my 360.
Thanks for the link. I printed out one for Calvin Johnson...who should have been on the cover.
Good to see another GaTech fan. Calvin is the man and will blow up in Detroit this year.

i think you need to get the full version of the 360 to verify that better... i run the demo vs the finished the the finished is much better.....i almost bought the 360 version until i saw a side by side comparison.... its better on the 360...its funny how i thought i wasnt going to notice the frame rate difference but it shows...
Q of BanditZ 07-20-07, 10:29 AM These comments from the IGN review are all too true IMO:
Now, while the PS3 version includes the same Sixaxis controls that were found in the launch version of last year's Madden for the PS3,
And as usual, I turn it off immediately.
...the largest technical flaw that crops up has to be the fact that the game doesn't run at 60 frames a second. For one thing, once you've gotten used to playing any game at 60 (including Madden on the PS3, which ran at a faster frame rate), going back to 30 feels like you're moving through molasses.
What? Madden 07 for PS3 was 60fps and this isn't? That makes this even LESS forgiveable and inexcuseable at that rate.
Damned skippy it feels like molasses.
For a sport where making split second moves is important, this halving of the speed really throttles down your plays, forcing you to sometimes over-anticipate passes or defensive jumps.
Absolutely.
It's really disappointing that the game was shipped this way; if anything, it would've been much better had the game been shipped a month or two later once the game could actually be optimized at 60 fps
Agreed. I would have gladly waited another month or so to get it done right.
Can firmware address something like this or not?
Even worse, the PS3 version is locked at 720p as its maximum output, which isn't anywhere near as good as the 360's 1080i and 1080p settings.
I've had several people say to me that "the 360 game is rendered at 720p anyways and it just scaled to those resolutions" but this review seems to suggest something else entirely.
You'll notice the difference on everything from character models to shrine textures, and it doesn't look nearly as sharp as it should.
From my brief run in with the 360 version on a sub par LCD in Gamestop, I can't really say there were differences in graphics but yes, it was faster and yes, it was smoother. I was back to my old tricks and making plays left and right like I'm used to vs. the slow molasses that I'm dealing with at home. It was immediately a different experience for me.
Keep in mind: I was going in hoping it would not be true and that this entire fps issue was overblown. The LCD in that store is inferior to the TV I have at home as well and yet the differences for the 360 version were still apparent to me in a very short time in terms of response, smoothness, and speed.
Now on the other side of the coin, I've seen some 360 owners here and abroad voice some complaints unique to their front.
Stuff like jitter/jutter on video and frame rates drop to singles digits.
I know I have not seen any kind of nightmares like that on the PS3 version. My only complaint with it again is its simply slower than I'd like it to be.
If I weren't so concerned with MS's dreadful hardware woes rigtht now and though I could actually get a 360 that wouldn't fail me in some manner, I'd have to say I'm tempted to try and get one and get my football fix on that front across the boards this year.
I'm coming off of last year where I had two 360's fail me in some manner or another and I said the hell with it.
Not a critical issue and I'd be fine if I knew a firmware fix could give us 60fps and end all of this.
i think you need to get the full version of the 360 to verify that better... i run the demo vs the finished the the finished is much better.....i almost bought the 360 version until i saw a side by side comparison.... its better on the 360...its funny how i thought i wasnt going to notice the frame rate difference but it shows...
Unfortunately yes, it does.
I still can't get over how slow the reviews are trickling out for a big title like this.
RAVEN56706 07-20-07, 10:47 AM i agree.... my 360 is running the game smoother.i cant understand why the ps3 version wasnt like this
Q of BanditZ 07-20-07, 10:56 AM i agree.... my 360 is running the game smoother.i cant understand why the ps3 version wasnt like this
Neither can I. There's no excuse for it whatsoever.
There's no excuse for slow @$$ frame rates and there's no excuse for the game being locked down at 720p, at best. None.
EA is to be blamed for laziness and rushing the game out and Sony is to be blamed for not doing a better job meeting third party developers halfway on understanding their hardware. It's that simple.
Is it possible for firmware to "add" 60fps to a title, because that's what needs to happen here ASAP.
RAVEN56706 07-20-07, 11:02 AM i dont think so... i think the games were designed for each and for the ps3 it was designed for that frame rate...
Q of BanditZ 07-20-07, 11:13 AM i dont think so... i think the games were designed for each and for the ps3 it was designed for that frame rate...
That's a shame if that's true, because that's a serious flaw IMO.
zoman504 07-20-07, 11:28 AM It a shame that the 360 continues to get better treatment. I have both systems and love both, but for sports games i think the feel of the playstation blows away my xbox, as it always has for sports. Im pretty sure I read this was a port of the xbox version, but i may be wrong.

It reminds of the SNES-Genesis days.
From start to finish, even though the SNES had "better hardware", certain games and especially EA Sports games were just 'better' on the Genesis for whatever reasons.
I remember I kept my Genesis for EA Sports games and odds and ends from Sega and "everything else" was on the SNES.
I guess we're back to that again, at least for this year. *shrugs*

It's called EA being lazy and rushing a product out and Sony not meeting them and other third party developers halfway to learn and understand their hardware better so as to prevent needless shortchanging like this.

I was thinking the same thing and I used to do the same exact thing. NHL was always better on Genesis.

your probably right... but the ps3 is a part time gaming machine imo
instantpop 07-20-07, 03:29 PM your probably right... but the ps3 is a part time gaming machine imo
It's only a part time gaming machine as of now because there's not a whole heck of a lot to play on it. 360 was the same the first year of its release. Better yet, it was the Call of Duty 2 machine. Games came and that changed. Same will be true of the PS3. Sucks that it is taking this long, but they are coming.

Exactly. The first year (more or less) on any new console is mostly the doldrums and shakedown.
That still doesn't excuse what's happening to these EA and 2k football games this year on this system whatsoever.
I guess there's only two questions left:
1.) Can firmware address things like adding HD resolutions and making the game go from 30 to 60 fps?
2.) Heh, if so, will EA ever even bother?

First of all, it wouldnt be firmware, it would be a software update for the game. Next, I dont see any reason why they would do this. I dont really understand this situation, they made Madden 07 on the PS3 last year. Also, they basically stood by why Xbox advertised the 60 fps difference in their press conference. If they were interested in changing this or wanted to change it, it seems to me they would have responded somehow.

I think that review is full of crap. On my SXRD the 360 version of the game looks the same at 720p/1080i/1080p.
I also think the 30 fps/60 fps is getting overblown. A game can be responsive and feel fast at 30 fps, and a game can be unresponsive and feel slow at 60 fps. The 360 version at 60 fps still feels relatively unresponsive compared to PS2 NCAA in a game. I think it's just lazy EA programming. The stutters in the cut scenes and long pauses in all the menus (during game for playcalling and outside the game through the entire interface) are atrocious, so 60 fps obviously isn't helping much there.
talbain 07-24-07, 12:41 PM no it definitely looks better on the 360. where the ps3 beats the hell out of the 360 version is the ease of being able to import custom roster files...

I agree and yes, I should have used the phrases "software update" or "patch" instead of "firmware." ;)
gte747e 07-24-07, 07:58 PM Yes, the menu is the slowest of any game I have ever played. Maybe it is just me, but I also fee like I have to press the buttons down harder than normal.
I have the PS3 version and I haven't played through that many times, but I miss the pregame show with Lee Corso and Kurt Herbstreit (and the other guy). I also wish there was an ESPN pregame show before the big games. Nonetheless, having full rosters (via download) on the PS3 is awesome! It's helping me get to know the players' names before the real season begins.

Those were the good ol days. Remember NBA Live 95 and Madden 95. They were the best ever. Those 2 games were fresh to death and made EA a fortune at $50 a pop.
sonyfangirl 07-24-07, 11:25 PM I wish they showed more of the cheerleaders. That's a big part of college football to me - mostly because I used to be one.
My favorite part of this game is the shrine feature and allowing me to show highlights. I don't understand a lot of the plays, but I'm learning.
sonyfangirl 07-24-07, 11:52 PM Having the named rosters adds a lot to the game. If you have this game and don't have the rosters, go to madden mania and get them. Those guys did a great job.
I wish Corso was in the game putting the mascot heads on. That's my favorite part of the intros.
MATORANS 07-26-07, 01:49 AM the only game I ever play is NCAA and I was so excited for it with PS3
OK game graphics wise and I play it because I love college football, but too many things are starting suck
BAD
1) The opening intro is always Fowler explaining the game. I am already sick of it. Is their a way of optioning that out? I miss starting of with the cheerleaders and fans from across the nation.
2) Buttons are sometimes slow and sometimes fast and you can't tell when it is responding. playing on line I have thrown so many INTs becasause I am hitting x to snap and it throws it to x player.
3) Changing players online is very difficult. It is so slow and the buttons just do not respond. Is this my connection at all? Never had a problem with my PS2. Sometimes I will use a pause and not be able to change a single player in time.
4) No Coop? Are you kidding me?
5) Not being able to cycle backwards to pick a player on defense is a dumb thing they did last year. I was hoping they would fix it but no. It is even worse this year because mor of a delay issue.
6) Online and in the game, their is not enough time to pick a D. Online the timer starts and THEN you get to see what formation they are in. What a load of crap. Especially 4th and short.
7) On offense I did not see how to hide my play from my buddy plying against me. Maybe it is there but I didnt see it.
8) While online it does not seem to keep track of your stats as well as 2007 PS2. I don't know my tendencies or who I have played. I don't see anything for earning awards online. All I see is win//loss and DNF and streak. Am I missing something.
9) While loading game or exiting game, the loading screen is always the same image of the controller buttons. This is not a big deal but another example of little details that are better in previous games which were cheaper and on cheaper systems.
10) Maybe I have not played enough but I feel like I dont have as a good spin control over my runner. I have not stiff armed anyone yet. I still don't know how I juke when I juke.
GOOD
1) Starting an online game is a breeze. To me this is the biggest improvement.
2) Rosters were a breeze to input with a USB.
3) The video board and ability to save/upload highlights is awesome.
4) The lobby feel with trophy room for the intro is good.
Neutral
Harder to get the deep bomb and you can send the house all day and not get burned deep.
Overall the game is decent and some nice new features, but too many steps backwards for the amount of money to buy a PS3, a second controller and a game.
Villanman 07-26-07, 09:10 AM 5) Not being able to cycle backwards to pick a player on defense is a dumb thing they did last year. I was hoping they would fix it but no. It is even worse this year because mor of a delay issue.
You don't have to cycle. Hold the button down and go directly to the player you want.
Been this way for a while now in both gen versions.
7) On offense I did not see how to hide my play from my buddy plying against me. Maybe it is there but I didnt see it.
When you press the button to pick a play, Don't release the button yet, keep it held down and scroll to a random play and then release. The play called will be when you first pressed the button.

how do I simply play a full season on this game?

Dynasty Mode
Is anyone else having trouble getting online for this game? Every time I try a message pops up and says ea servers not available try again later. Is there something that needs to be done before getting to the game. I am signed in on my ps3 just fine and no other games caused me any trouble online. thanks for any help
dc10forlife 08-11-07, 07:24 AM Another bug:
In college, after a punt, the clock starts after the ball is spotted and the whistle blows for the 25 second clock. This was a rule change for last year. Unfortunately, the NCAA 08 has not incorporated it.

I think the NCAA got rid of that rule this year. So I'm pretty sure the game got it right.

For those who have both the 360 and PS3 is there a difference in lag in the menu system or in the tickers ?
rizzxx7 08-11-07, 05:57 PM I hate that damn lag, and when I'm playing the dynasty and make changes in my depth chart the stupid game keeps on changing it back even after I save the damn game
Conspiracy* 10-29-07, 01:47 PM Back up in yo A$$ with tha resurection..
Props to anyone who knows what song/movie thats from.
Anyway, If anyone is still playing the game I have something I cannot figure out. When I am playing against my bro's how can I get "user2" "user3" and "user4" to be thier individual profile names? It seems pretty strange that I wouldnt be able to change "user2" to bigpac or something, yet I've never found to do it.
