View Full Version : What receiver with your PS3
Jacknsc 07-15-07, 11:39 AM Now that the PS3 upconverts, I was looking to get a new receiver that has HDMI in/outputs. Which receivers are you guys using, and how are they working with the PS3? Not looking to spend more then $600-$700. Any advice would be helpful.
Jiffylush 07-15-07, 12:11 PM I am on the low end of the spectrum with the Sony DG810, and I have been quite happy with it.
There is a thread around about 'PS3 owners looking for lossless audio' that has info about a lot of receivers in it.
Do you have any brand preference? At your price range you have a bit to choose from, I think the Onkyo 805 might be a good choice, and there are some nice Yamaha options as well.
Swift Mojo Hand 07-15-07, 12:47 PM I have my ps3 connected to the DG810 as well and I am very happy with it. I did not want to spend more on my receiver than I did on the PS3 so this was the one for me . J@R.com has them for$288. It had 3 hdmi ports LPCM audio. It looks like you are willing to spend a little more so you may want to concider the Sony STR-DG1000 with it's 7.1 sound, composit to HDMI conversion, on screen display and learning remote. Feachers that are missing from the 810. Just remember to have some cash left over to buy a decent set of speakers if you do not have a set already. This is just as important as the receiver.
Mattardo 07-15-07, 12:52 PM Be careful with Sony receivers however, some aren't future-proof-I have an Str-DE885 and it plays every sound format flawlessly except Dolby Digital from Blue Ray discs. Doesn't make sense, seeing as it's Sony and the PS3 is Sony - but there you have it. It's a known issue that both Sony and SCEA deny till they're blue in the face, at which point they revert to their line "the ps3 may not be compatible with all brands of blah blah". So just make sure some little tiny detail about the hardware won't end up biting you in a major way down the road.
dogdoctor 07-15-07, 01:01 PM Here is an excellent thread to read through: PS3 owners on a budget, who want lossless HD audio - Look here. (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=770354)
Denon AVR-2307CI. Once I got past the setup it works great. My problem with the setup is that I have more devices that the Denon has discreet inputs. I got around that though with a trick that the ABT sales guy taught me. Use digital AND analog sources for the same discreet input. The Denon will choose the active device.
A great thread that helped me pick an AVR for my PS3.

I have the 5200ES and you would think that for the $1500 I spent on it, it could interact decently with other Sony equipment, but alas that is not the case. For some reason when playing PS2 games on the PS3 with it hooked up via HDMI to the receiver, instead of coverting the Dolby surround tracks on games GOW2 in LPCM surround, it just plays back two channel stereo, very very annoying.
NewOrlnsDukie 07-15-07, 02:11 PM God-willing my Onkyo 875 will be here in the next 2 weeks, and I will be in full uncompressed audio bliss very soon...
rizzxx7 07-15-07, 02:36 PM I have the 5200ES also and I'm real happy with it but I don't play any PS2 games because I can't stand the overscan. For everything else the 5200 is pretty good. I had the Onkyo 805 for almost a month and absolutely hated it NeworlnsDukie...
I've had the Onkyo 805 since release and have been plenty happy with it.
rizzxx7 07-15-07, 04:41 PM I was using a Sony DA4ES and Denon 4306 before I bought the Onkyo and the Onkyo just didn't fair well compare to those 2 recievers even with all the1.3 features.

DesertKnight 07-15-07, 05:34 PM Anyone have any insight on the Sony HTD-DW995 system??? I have it in the Amazon cart and Im about to pull the trigger. It accepts 1080p and has all the HDMI inputs I would need to hook up the ps3 and DirecTv hd box to it and just run one HDMI from the receiver to my 60 A2020 set. It seems like a good system with all the technology I need for my HD setup.

its rumored (not confirmed) around here that the 995 does audio processing over hdmi but only you will get 2 channels of LPCM.(no 5.1 or 7.1) check the audio section. it does do 1080p though. not bad for that price.
husky696 07-15-07, 07:56 PM Denon 2807. Great receiver.
danggang 07-15-07, 08:17 PM Onkyo TX-SR805. I'm very happy with it.
Deinonych 07-15-07, 08:21 PM I'm holding out for the new Denon receivers with HDMI 1.3 coming out later this year. So, for now I'm using my old Sony 333ES receiver with optical for audio (PS3 is connected directly to my TV via HDMI).
bcrossan7 07-15-07, 10:42 PM Denon 4306 :D
Pens1566 07-15-07, 10:43 PM Yamaha RX-V661. Just got it hooked up on friday. So far, so good. Got it at J&R for way less than retail by calling in.

i'm currently using the 661 as well, its wonderful but I read before that the 661 doesn't pass 1080p/24 through hdmi? would this be an issue assuming we decide to upgrade to 1080p/24 capable tv in the future?
mpalmieri1203 07-16-07, 12:27 AM Onkyo 674 and it is a bargain for the price. Fantastic receiver!
bullet69 07-16-07, 12:53 AM Sony STRDA777ES. I know its obsolete but It still works and its to heavy to move.
lilmarc1988 07-16-07, 12:54 AM getting onkyo 605 soon
slowfaller 07-16-07, 01:02 AM I just had the Onkyo 605 delivered and am happy with it so far. One thing that doesn't really bother me but others aren't happy with is the receiver down scales 1080i HD channels to 720p when you have video in from the STB w/ component and out as HDMI. There are work arounds over in the audio section though. With my PS3 hooked up it sounds great in multichannel PCM. Plus standard cable looks better too.
Edit: $399.00 instore at Circuit City as of 7/13
lilmarc1988 07-16-07, 01:11 AM thats ok my t.v only 720p and 1080i
DaGamePimp 07-16-07, 03:01 AM Denon 887 (same as 2307) , great receiver without breaking the bank ;) .

I have a Sony received, an older one, and have the same issue. It won't play Dolby Digital from the PS3 and beleive it or not it will not play Dolby Digital from the DVD player that came with it, go figure. I just ordered an Onkyo 605 to hook up the PS3 and Xbox 360 HD DVD.
joe_six_pack 07-16-07, 04:23 PM Yamaha 6090.
If I were in the market to buy one today, I'd probably go with a onkyo 605 or higher. That being said, the yamaha is working fine.

Got a quick question rizzxx7, does your receiver drop the audio signal for a few seconds on PS3 games, BDs, etc everytime you put something new in the PS3. For me, I start playing a game, movie, etc, and always about after 5 minutes it juist drops the audio for a few seconds and then goes back normal. It will not do this again, unless I change the game, movie, whatever. Pretty sure its a PS3 issue cause this happens with nothing else, its not something serious because once it does it its fine, its just strange.
cubalis2 07-16-07, 07:56 PM Pioneer Elite 81TXV - very happy with it.

not that I've noticed.

RowdyRoddy 07-17-07, 08:32 AM Onkyo TX-SR805 and I love it. HDMI 1.3 in - HDMI 1.3 out. Uncompressed lossless audio via PCM over HDMI. Beautiful! :D
I don't use a receiver. My PS3 is plugged directly into the PDP.
igotthatfire247 08-13-07, 04:22 PM I've got a Yamaha 6090 (got it for a steal) ...
works great although I have to upgrade my speakers.
Onkyo TX-SR705. Just got it last Fri; so far very pleased. Three HDMI inputs. Check CC for some occasionally crazy pricing (I got in at a decent price with an online coupon, but at least twice now they've listed it at a lot less; most recently Sun morning for about 4 hours, where it apparently was significantly cheaper than their normal price.
Also has pre-outs, and allows PLIIx to be overlaid over PCM (for future upgrades to 7.1). Would have liked 4 HDMI inputs, but would have had to go to the 875 for that. Using all three HDMI already (PS3; Xbox360 Elite; TiVo Series3). In the future I'd like inputs for HD Camcorder (already have Canon HV20 with HDMI out), standalone BD and/or BD/HD DVD combo player, future computer w/ HDMI, etc.

Chris7277 08-13-07, 08:14 PM Denon 4306 here with the updated software, works at 7.1 flawlessly.
Replacement 08-14-07, 03:10 AM I have an Onkyo 803, it us a couple of years old but it works awesome.
It was $800 new there has been new ones out for around the same price; 804, 805. I got mine for $700.

No issues as of yet except it can not take full advantage of the PS3's capabilities due to it being obsolete.
It still sounds great though.
Jay_Davis 08-14-07, 01:38 PM You have to look for yourself to see exactly which features are more important to you, but the new Onkyo and Denon series are a good place to start.
Onkyo: 605/705/805/875/905
Denon: 2808ci/3808ci/4308ci
cadsystems 08-14-07, 01:47 PM I have the onkyo tx-sr674 that has 2 hdmi inputs and 1 output. Holds upto 4 components which is fine for me but I only have the PS3 and a Motorola STB. It sounds great, but I've heard it doesn't do the 7.1 all that well through HDMI. I only have mine 5.1 as I haven't upgraded my speakers yet so I can't verify this. I have seen the Onkyo 674 as low as 299 of late. I picked mine up for 399 about 6 months ago. Be aware that if you are running hdmi thru your STB that if it's motorola it will need a firmware upgrade to do the HDCP handshake correctly, because the onkyo is acting as a repeater.
Onkyo 905 and all I can say is WOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the clarity is amazing. Before my system sounded a little muddy but bloody hell this thing blew me out of the water the other night.
Have an integra 9.8 on order. Hopefully my reaction is the same as yours Suzook.
I just got a Sony STR-DG910 $368 @ Amazon. 3 HDMI Inputs.
My first lossless blu-ray was NIN concert, kinda meh. Sounded good but hard to tell the difference between 1500kb/sec on my 360 hd-dvd addon. But then I watched POTC, oh my now that did sound awesome.
