View Full Version : Is my Sony 1031q supposed to shoot sparks like this?

My 1031q had blown a fuse on the power board below the red lens. I replaced it, and it blew again, I tried once more, and it did not blow, but sparks suddenly came off the middle board (GA board?), and a high pitched sound came out of one of the components on the board. Once the power was cut the sound slowly winded down. I could not tell specifically where it came from. There are no burn marks that I can see, and the board was not shorting out on the chassis. Anyone out there know what is going on with my poor little pj?

You destroyed the board. Sparks flying and not blowing the fuse means you probably used a fuse rated way higher than what it should have been, and there's just no telling how many components you destroyed on it.

You may have even burned traces off the board from the sound of things.

Buy a new board or a new pj. I have one of those boards left, but if It were me I'd just buy a new (used) pj.

If you decide to parts it out I may be interested in the tubes if they are in decent condition.

The proper fuse was used.

I am going to hang on to it for a while before I part it out, maybe I can put these tubes (which are pristine), in a Barco 701 or something, if I cant find a new board for this thing.

Thanks

I might be able to repair your Ga board if you want to send it to me.

An Ehome ECP would be a good candidate for those tubes also if you find a cheap one in your area.

I have a full 1031q with pristine tubes that's been sitting here for over two years, just waiting to use the tubes in a better pj but none of the right models have come along in my area for the right price. I'm hoping to find a 3500 or 4500 ECP for them. All the boards work in that 1031q but I won't bother with it because it can't scan high enough for most of my uses.
