View Full Version : Last memory of my CRT era...
My tiny bedroom theater is undergoing re-decoration. And the 8 years old 4:3 screen will be replaced by a 16x9 model.
Since 1999, I'd gone through a Baco 701 HQ, 808 Graphic, Sony G70 and my last CRT NEC XG85. They all gave great image on the 84" diag 4:3 screen.
When the XG85 broke down on 2002, I switched to digital projector starting with the infamous Panny AE100. And since then AE200, Epson TW200H and my current Sony VW50. They are all 16x9 projectors so I'm only using part of the 4:3 screen. Lately I try using a DC Wide adaptor in front of the projector lens to shorter the throw distance in order to fill a 4:3 image on the whole screen. With the Epson TW200H 720p LCD, a 84" 4:3 image with only 960x720 pixels at 8' viewing, the screendoor is in your face and the contrast is weak being having only part of the output brightness.
Thankfully, the Sony VW50 picture is a whole lot better. In fact the enlarged 4:3 full screen image is EXCELLENT! No screendoor, plenty of brightness and decent contrast with great color. For the first time since the CRT gone, I can FINALLY get back the joy of watching full screen 4:3 content, even those from Laserdisc!
But all great thing comes to end. Tonight I will be taking down the good old 4:3 screen to prepare for the installation of the 100" diag 16x9 screen. The center of the 16x9 screen will be a few inchs smaller than the old size so I'll be missing the good old day!
And this will be my last memory on CRT projection...

CZ Eddie 07-16-07, 01:21 AM When you were upgrading your AE100 to an AE200, I was selling my AE100 and buying a Marquee 8000.
Only once since have I looked back, during a temporary moment of weakness when I bought the AE700 that lasted for a week before I sold it for an 8500.
Seeya!
Btw, I don't ever remember having owned a 4:3 screen at any point in time?

Sorry, but I'm a little confused here. You got rid of your CRT back in 2002 and have had several digitals since then. But because you have the same screen that was used with the CRT, it somehow makes you think you have CRT in your system, or something CRT related..??

What he said!
I think he somehow equates 4:3 ratio with CRT. Maybe he does not realize he could change the ratio on a CRT projector. :p :)

I guess nowaday no one watch native 4:3 content on a native 4:3 CRT projector (that means ALL the CRT projector!). And of course there can't be any really really GREAT looking 4:3 content, at least not in the States or NA!
I still remember my first stunning CRT projector viewing. I think that was around 10 years ago. It was a dealer showroom and I bring my own MTV/concert laserdisc (4:3 content!). I think the laserdisc player was the Pioneer S9. The projector was a Seleco model (anyone still using the brand?). And the projection was in native 480i from source to on screen image. And it was WONDERFUL, even by today standard IMO. Excellent contrast and vivid color. Very sharp and dynamic. Sure there was some scanline effect especially during vertical motion but only a minor issue seeing the great big picture!
Anyway, my ideal screen size is a 10' wide 16x9. And the center 4:3 will be at 120" diag which is the perfect size I wanted to watch those wonderful 4:3 content again and again.

No, not since people figured out that you can use more of the raster than the mfg's recommend. And suddenly people were using just as much raster for "native" 16:9 as you were probably using for "native" 4:3.

I use an NEC 10PG and as we know NEC is very conservative with throw distances. So this projector was installed by the previous owner exactly as recommended by NEC and threw an 80" wide picture - after I had installed it in my HT the picture was a bit more than 100" wide with the same throw distance :D

The word native does not apply since you are not stuck with any one ratio or resolution but I understand what you mean. ( well kind of :) )

That's too funny :D
I've clean up my room and one of the front speaker is in the living room and another in the other bedroom. The "back" of the bedroom theater is ready while waiting the new screen to be installed at the front.
For the past few nights, for the first time, I can see the WHOLE 84" 4:3 screen! Because the front speakers will block the 2 lower corners of the screen. Now with the front speakers removed, WOW a REAL FULL 4:3 image! Seriously the image simply POP! Even though audio is via the AV amp headphone only! :)
Tomorrow the old screen will be removed, and the new screen installation should be fully complete on or before Friday.
Well, nothing last forever except memory! :)

Li On
Curt Palme 07-24-07, 01:31 AM I also have a memory of CRT. It was from about 10 minutes ago when I actually had an hour to watch HD.
It was a good memory indeed! I'll be sure to repeat it sometime tomorrow night.
