View Full Version : Outdoor movie recommendations

OK--Here is a thread to post what movies you are showing/have shown in your outdoor movie systems. While it is always fun to see any movie outside under the stars, we are always struggling to find something that is appealing to both adults and children (we have many kids ages 5-10 or so in our neighborhood). You can't go wrong with Pixar, but we'd like to show some live-action movies as well. (I love the Casino Royale party idea, but sadly, with the number of kids in the neighborhood, we really have to limit to "family friendly" fare.)

We have only done one movie night this year, and we showed "Over the Hedge", which is a good one.

Talking to neighbors, we have had a couple of recommendations:

Charlotte's Web
Zoom
Sky High

Any other ideas?

My family falls in the same boat. Most kids who come here are around 10, at the oldest. So we're looking for the same always.

We just did Hoodwinked this last weekend. Lots of fun for that movie, and it seems that not everyone had seen it, like the Pixar flicks. It's not live action, but still fun.

In our queue, for next year, is Bridge to Terabithia, which is rated PG and live action, but one of my daughters is still a bit young for it.

Regular non-Pixars I've done and are perfect for that age are:

E.T.
Night at the Museum
The Mask
Star Wars - any of them

But I'm in the same boat - I'm tired of the same old everyone's seem them 100 times Pixar movies. So I'm looking for more of the E.T. type. And of course Home Alone might as well fit into the same Pixar category. Uncle Buck might be a good one?

I am new to the whole outdoor movie experience (this weekend will be my first) however I too have a large contingent of kids 10 and under in the neighborhood. So I was thinking of showing some of these movies: (In addition to the standby Pixar fare)

The Last Mimzy
Hoot
Night at the Museum
Duma
Flicka
Dreamer
Because of Winn Dixie
Arhtur and the Invisibles
Jumangee
Nanny McPhee

Any thoughts?

We are showing Casino Royale this weekend, so the next flick has to be a family movie. We are probably going to wait until the end of September and show "Monster House," to help get the kids in the mood for some Halloween action.

Monster House would be great outside closer to Halloween. We are planning to do Night at the Museum (Blu ray) this weekend and Wallace and Gromit!

We ended up doing "Flushed Away" which was a real crowd-pleaser. Everyone liked the singing slugs!

Anyway, we did our second movie night of the year last Saturday and it was a huge hit, as usual.

We have done a few outdoor movies but run into the problem of the adults not always wanting to watch kids movies. RV went over really well and even the SD disc was bright and beautiful. Some of the scenery was amazing and the pq was great, even on a 14' wide screen. Happy Feet on HD DVD was a good picture but everybody lost intrest. We took the pj camping, along with my HDA2 and a set of computer speakers. We hung painters drop cloth ( my screen of choice) off of the canopy off of my brother in laws camper canopy and watched The Departed. It was so late before it got dark enough to watch that the kids were already asleep so the adults enjoyed being able to watch a more grown up movie and we did not have to worry about offending the neighbors... I can't immagine watching something like this in my back yard. We have also done a few concert dvds, The Eagles on HD had everybody up dancing.... and drinking... and then more dancing!

I think my projector was easily my best entertainment purchase ever. It gives us hours and hours of pleasure in the house on my 119 HP screen and while a back yard movie is not that often, it is a blast when we do have one.

Here are some, that would work outside...some of these may not be completely kid friendly

The Great Outdoors - Classic movie, love it
Star Wars - The original 3 episodes, but all will work
Jurasic Park - The original, not sequels
Tomb Raider - Mmmmm, Lara Croft on a huge screen....
Lord of the Rings - If you have a really, really appreciative crowd, and good neighbors...
Original StarTrek Episodes - Cheer for the guy in the Red shirt on away missions.
Miss Congeiniality - Good family movie
Monty Python and the Holy Grail - Gotta love British humor, though.
Die Hard - any in the series
Planes, Trains, and Automobiles
Blues Brothers
The Final Countdown
Tommy Boy
Austin Powers
Something about Mary
The classic (unedited) Looney Tunes (back from the 70's and 80's) Use them for pre-movie entertainment.
Family Guy and Futurama

I'll have to check out Sky High and Zoom - never heard of them.

My kids loved Sky High (and I must admit, so did I), but when they saw the trailer for Zoom they both said it didn't look good. The critics agreed and I saved $30 at the theater.

Its been awhile since anyone has posted here. I just recently had a GTG for an outdoor movie night that featured Night at the Museum. I am planning another one in 1 week.

Can you some of you recommend some recent Good movies to present that caters to the entire family (young and old)?

If nothing recent, then what classics?

I think that "Meet the Robinsons" comes out in October 23--we are probably doing that one, although probably the last of the season. Most people we talked to did not see it. When it came out, I took my 5 and 3 year olds to see it, and they loved it (and I liked it quite a bit myself). Its very entertaining, and quite touching at the end.

We are still looking for something for September, though. One of my neighbors recommended "300". Think 3 and 5 years olds would like this one? ;)

I am a lurker here, as I have no equipment for outdoor movies but I have lots of desire as I am very intrigued with the premise.

I have a couple of suggestions (some already may have been mentioned):

Summer Rental
Planes Trains and Automobiles
Animated Family flicks like Robots, Over the Hedge, Monsters, Inc., Cars, Who Framed Roger Rabbit
Days of Thunder

Speaking of Days of Thunder, run your HDTV out to the outdoor theatre and show the NASCAR Nextel Cup race live from Richmond. That would be a hoot!

Truth be told, most movies would be nice except for documentaries like maybe Bowling for Columbine, Inconvenient Truth and so on.

Which would be a better showing The Incredibles or Cars (both acceptance by various ages as well as PQ).

I am just wondering if any of these 2 suffer in PQ when viewing on a projector

Steve Scherrer
09-11-07, 03:29 PM
I would think Incredibles would be better than Cars, although my kids like both very much (5 year old and 3 year old). Incredibles has more action, and Cars slows down quite a bit in the middle.

But both are 2 hour movies, and with the ages of the kids coming, I have learned to try to limit the running time to about 1.5 hours instead of 2.

Without more information on your projector, it's tough to say--but if you are talking outdoors in the dark, I don't think the projector will let you down.

My first outdoor movie night I feature Night at the Museum. This was hit on a couple points. 1, the movie sat well with kids and adults. 2, everyone was in awe of the movie playing on my garage door!

Anyway, now I am stressing about geting a hit with the crowd again that will feature most of the same crowd plus new.

I really need another good movie to pull this off.

I am thinking of Incredibles, but not sure just yet.

How do you all think Back to the Future will work? Most of the crowd will be age 7 on up.

Steve Scherrer
09-12-07, 11:35 AM
I was considering Back to the Future as well. Except that if I recall, it slows down quite a bit as Marty settles in the past, then picks up a lot toward the end when he is trying to do everything right. I remembering loving it as a kid (but it came out when I was about 14 years old, so I was much older and could understand it). I would be afraid younger ones would have no idea what was going on and get bored because of it.

Incredibles is a good choice that we did for an outdoor movie night. Really, anything Pixar would be good.

I also did Star Wars (Ep. IV), which surprisingly, brought out a ton of Dads to the movie (a lot more than come to watch a Disney movie).

WHat about Raiders of the Lost Ark?

We did Back to the Future for our Dept Movie night. It was easily the biggest hit. People actually cheered when George hit Biff outside the car! We even put a fake clock on top of our Courthouse, some Save the Clocktower posters and I got a local guy to bring his Delorean. Really Cool!

Here is are list from the summer. We ran for 10 Wednesdays starting about 8:45. Odd time, but we have quite a few other events also. Still had great turnouts.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (new)
North by Northwest
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Singin' in the Rain
Monster House
ET
Over the Hedge
Back to the Future
My Big Fat Greek Wedding
Chronicles of Narnia (new)

We are going to do a Halloween series also. They will be on Saturdays.
Here are the titles-

Wallace and Gromit Curse of the Were-Rabbit
Young Frankenstein
Corpse Bride
Ghostbusters

The choices are hard when trying to satisfy all. I am going with Back to the Future as I have prepared an 80' Movie Trivia slide show and to keep with the 80's theme, I will show Back to the Future.

Do you recall how this show sat with the young ones (a 5 yr old, some 8 year olds and then it goes up from there) (or should I say, how did the young ones sit with the show :) )

Everyone seemed pretty good. Im guessing younger than 8 would probably get a little antzy. We sell popcorn and other goodies, so the parents usually send them over to get it from us.

You sell popcorn and candy??? Man, that seems a bit, I dunno, rude?

We usually put out popcorn and some drinks, and inevitably, others in the neighborhood bring other goodies. We never really run out of lots of sugary things for kids to eat, and nobody has to pay us for it!!!

Ok, guys/gals. I just decided to watch the DVD tonight as I received it from Netflix and it was pretty scratched up, to make sure it would not skip. As I watch, I am amazed at all the "****", "Damn", "Hell", "Bastard", "Bitch", "Ass", "spook", "refer-head", and sexual innuendo/assaulting going on. Its been awhile since I have watched this. I am just suprised that no one warned me of this as I kept mentioned that young ones would be watching, as young as 6!

I have decided that this movie, as good as it is, is just not meant for pre-teens (IMO). I now HAVE to re-print all of my tickets (which were handed out this evening) and will decide on something else. I was all set to do an 80's theme as I have planned an 80's trivia slide show, an 80's pop culture labeling on my solo cups, etc... Looks like I might be going with E.T. to keep with the 80's theme! Unless someone can recommend a better (all ages) movie.

I just simply don't remember all the swearing in BTTF--perhaps I have seen the tv versions so many times that have been sanitized.

It's almost too bad you can't get the "airplane" or tv versions of some of these movies that have been sanitized. Some of these movies are great, but you're right--I wouldn't want to show them to my 5 year old with all the swearing. Sexual innuendo I am not so sure about--I am sure most goes right over kids' heads.

So what other 80s movie??? ET seems like a good bet (However, remember Elliot says "Penis Breath" at some point!)

I would also throw another vote for Raiders of the Lost Ark which has extremely mild sexual innuendo--and maybe a "hell" or "damn" here and there. (I think they actually swear more in German in that movie!)

Anyone ever consider "The Last Starfighter?"

I did a search on "family movies" and 80s, and got this list:

1. Annie
Starring: Carol Burnett, Albert Finney, Anne Reinking ...
2. Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, A
Starring: Keshia Knight Pulliam, Michael Gross, Jean Marsh ...
3. Dark Crystal, The
Starring: Stephen Garlick, Jim Henson, Lisa Maxwell ...
4. Dragon That Wasn't (Or Was He?), The

5. E.T.

6. Explorers

7. Frankenweenie
Starring: Barret Oliver, Shelley Duvall, Daniel Stern ...
8. Goonies, The
Starring: Sean Astin, Anne Ramsey, Corey Feldman ...
9. Labyrinth
Starring: David Bowie, Jennifer Connelly, Toby Froud ...
10. NeverEnding Story, The
Starring: Barret Oliver, Noah Hathaway, Tami Stronach ...
11. Ratboy
Starring: Sondra Locke, Robert Townsend, Sharon Baird ...
12. Santa Claus: The Movie
Starring: David Huddleston, John Lithgow, Dudley Moore ...
13. Savannah Smiles
Starring: Mark Miller, Donovan Scott, Bridgette Andersen ...
14. Who Framed Roger Rabbit
Starring: Bob Hoskins, Christopher Lloyd, Charles Fleischer ...

That must be it, we have BEEN Sanitized/Turnerized and Commercialized :) over the years.

Too bad though because I really wanted to show BTTF tomorrow night. The movie is great, but just not for pre-teens (again in my opinion) but the swearing and suggested/implied rape scene (its not even that bad compared to what is on TV today) is just too much for "everyone".
Its amazing as you watch these older movies and you witness a movie that just wouldnt be made that way today. If BTTF was made today, there is no way that it would have contained 1/2 the cursing or racists remarks or "implied rape scenes". It would have been filmed so that it catered to the masses and not targeted to certain audiences as most movies were back then.

I do remember penis breath and how funny that was as a kid!

I havent seen ET in such a LONG time, I am worried that it hasnt aged well

They came out with the 20th anniversary ET versions a couple of years ago, and the picture quality is very good (although some scenes are at night, so if you have a dim projector, be aware!)

The set we picked up has the original version and the new version, with added scenes and updated special effects (instead of ET "running" through the forest while being chased (basically, you hear him scream, and then see something "moving" through the bushes--the new version actually has him "bouncing" through the forest.

There is also an extended added scene of ET in the bathtub that is actually pretty cute. One other change is that they digitally removed all of the guns from the government agents toward the end and replaced them with walkie talkies.

But overall, the movie holds up really well. It's funny seeing Michael playing Dungeons and Dragons with his friends, and as a parent, seeing the mom toss little Gertie in the backseat without a seat belt, let alone in a car seat.

We are a City Parks and Recreation Department. The popcorn and drink sales go to support our Teen and Youth Advisory Board. One of their biggest accomplishments was the construction of a 13,000 sqft skate park. The money goes to a good cause. Popcorns only a buck anyway.

KEZUG- I really have to apologize. I totally forgot about any of the swearing. It came up for us when I previewed the movie before the show. We decided to show it anyway with a warning that it was rated "1984 PG". Noone said a word to us and many of our dept employees were sitting amongst people.

The other thing is many of these idea's go right over kids heads.

We did "Ant Bully" last night. It was a movie nobody in our neighborhood had seen, has a lot of Star Power (Nicholas Cage, Julia Roberts, Meryl Streep, Paul Giamatti), a really wonderful story, some very funny and touching scenes, and some great "big screen" moments (the bug attack on the Exterminator is just great on the Really Big Screen). It played wonderfully for the 5-10 year olds we had at our party. Highly recommended for younger kids for an outdoor movie night.

Some very good ideas there, and 'The Princess Bride' is an 80's movie classic ( Hello, my name is Indigo Montoya. ).

Just an FYI.. We watched Raiders again the other night, and while there isn't much in the way of swearing, there is a lot of violence.. The German guy that gets caught in the airplane blades, shootings, and of course the face melting at the end.. A bit corny by todays standards, but still could be upsetting to the younger viewers.. :)

Ok, here I go again, struggling with a movie to pick for our G2G for an outdoor movie night. This Friday is supposed to be unseasonably warm so I am going to take advantage of it.

While trying to avoid recent movies that may have been watched too much in repetition, yet keeping everyone (young and old) into the movie, I am considering going with Monsters Inc. However, I wonder how this movie would appear via a projector...is this movie generally "dark"?
I could go with Cars or Incredibles but thought Monsters Inc would be fun going into the Halloween season.

I am curious as to other opinions on this.

Monsters, Inc. would be a perfect choice. It is a bright, colorful movie, like all Pixar movies, that looks excellent on projectors. It is very funny, and a crowd pleaser. I recommend without hesitation.

I saw a product called TVGuardian that removes offensive words and replaces them. It looks more or less like a dvd player box, and connects with RCAs. I've never bought or used one, but the sales clerk at the store said their church used one frequently and it worked fine. I think it was about $125. I just checked their website, and it looks like limited availability on some of their products till March. I have also seen several brands of DVD players available with TVGuardian as well.

I've been wanting to try an outdoor party, but was concerned about bugs getting into the projector. Is this a problem?

i do have madagascar 1, should have brought that out last night for the test segments.

ima try to whip out my hd dvd player friday night and enjoy some blazing saddles! also have the matrix trilogy on hd dvd.

this coming friday night will be another test night. it will be a combination movie portion tests and xbox gaming night. a test movie night ( i call it Outdoor Movie Night #0) will take place this saturday night with our first party/people gathering. local family only :P

i believe the final movie choices are Disneys' Car's first, then Speed Racer.

Zombieland (2009) and Black Dynamite (2009) were both hits for me this summer.

played Speed Racer and Rush Hour 1 saturday. Speed Racer is great for kids. fast action scenes with comic book style transitions, face-melting colors, and great sound.

Rush Hour 1 is a personal favorite of mine. kinda like a wing to my wang :P
everybody that was there liked it as it was mostly funny.

Rio will be the first movie 2 sundays from now. i'll have the front speakers fixed by then cause it has this butt-thumping soundtrack. havent decided on the second movie
