So I went to gamestop to take a look at some games and I was surprised to find some used HD DVDs. I picked up 3 at very good prices and went to check out just to find out there is a buy 2 get 1 free deal on all used movies including HD DVD!!! Couple that with the save 10% on all used items if you have a Gamestop card and the low prices to begin with and it is a killer deal.

Used prices ranged from $14.99 to $17.99. I got The Mummy, The Mummy Returns, and Jet Li's Fearless for $35.05! That's 11.68 each! The discs are in very good condition, Gamestop obviously has the quality control box checked. Mummy has a few light scratches but Fearless, a combo disc is completely pristine which surprised me since combos in my opinion are more prone to scratches.

A few used movies I saw were

King Kong
Batman Begins
Excalibur
Last Samurai
Miami Vice
The Mummy
The Mummy Returns
Jet Li's Fearless

The used HD DVD movies were mixed in with the used DVD movies, but it appeared to be alphabetical.

Yeah, my Gamestop/E.B. Games does that too. Never seen more than 2 titles at any one time though.

I believe all the Gamestop/ EB stores nationwide have the used DVD sales. I have yet to come across any HD DVD's though at mine.

Same here, and one of those two used HD-DVD titles always seems to be a $12.99 used copy of King Kong (probably the one that came with the HD-DVD add-on drive for the 360).

lol, lucky, I wouldn't mind picking up Kong for the picture quality but the places around here price it used at $17.99-$19.99.

The only reason I havent bought used is because I want the disk sales to show up. I don't think used sales are reported to Neilson.

Gamestop selling HD DVDs will change everything... :)

Has anybody else has a problem with Gamestop employees?
My local store has some HD-DVD's and Blu-Rays.
The problem I have run into is an Assitant manager who is Very Pro PS3.
The last time I was in, he asked why I want HD-DVD's, because "they won't be making HD-DVD's anymore in a couple months". Then he went on to say Best Buy doesn't carry them anymore either. This was the same week that Best Buy started adding HD-DVD end-cap displays.
I think it's time to talk to his boss. If he keeps it up, I'll talk to corporate next. And seeing as though I only work about 20 miles from Their corporate offices, I wonder how that would go?
He seems like an OK guy, but he is not good for a retail store. He won't even talk about games, unless the game is available on both PS3 and 360, or just PS3.

Heh... it's pretty funny because Gamestop only had used HD DVD movies, no used Blu-Rays. But they had a few brand new Blu-Rays at MSRP prices. $34.99...

Hmm, it's too bad they won't sell new HD-DVD's. They sell new BR because the PS3 supports them and forget that the 360 has an add-on. I wonder if that will change when the add-on price drops and sales on it pick up.

As for Gamestop, I've started to avoid them more now. I just don't like some of their practices, especially the fact that they will open your 'new' game and place it in the box then seal it up.

Why would they open your new game?

I attempt to describe my most recent experience at Gamestop. I was looking to purchase an HD-DVD add on for xbox 360.

Me: Do you sell the HD-dvd add on?
GS: We have 1 used and 1 new
Me: How much are they?
GS: New is $199 + tax and used is $149 + tax. The used one doesn't come with King Kong or Remote.
Me: So if it doesn't come with remote, how can you charge it $149 when the remote is $30 and King Kong is at least $20.
GS: ????

As you can see, their policies suck.

When you go and buy a game marked as new, they take the disc out of a drawer, put it in a case and offer to seal it up for you. I don't call that new or at least I don't always trust them. To me it should be sealed when I buy it. If I wanted to potentially buy a used game from them then I would. This has happened to my brother and I and I know it has happened to others.

The DVDs are usually in good shape but it is a major PITA to get those damn yellow stickers off. It's a deal breaker for me. :(

lol I actually worried about that. I didn't want to get that residue, but the stickers came off very easily.

My Gamestop quit carrying dvds all together. When they did carry them, the used price was usually more than purchasing them new somewhere else.

How can it be "new" if some dude opened the box and touched the disc? Most new releases they keep behind the counter, sealed, but for DS games they do this for all titles (I guess cause their easy to steal).

Another angle is that maybe they open the new games so that the used games are more inticing. Why bother paying extra for a "new" copy when its already been man-handled?

Yeah I can't stand going there anymore. The last 2 or 3 times I've been in there I can't buy a game without getting the sales pitch, and a printout of upcoming titles to preorder. I could care less, I know what I want and follow when good games are coming out anyway. I went there about 2 years ago and got the sales pitch "do I want to Preorder Halo 3", you got to be kidding right, asking me to preorder a game a full 2 years before it's to be released. But in his defense "I can reserve my limited edition with the SPARTAN Helmet" LOL. And seriously what they give you for a used game (and movies I'm sure)and what they sell you them for is ridiculous. Their margins are astronomical

I'm not trying to stick up for Gamestop too much, but since I used to work there quite a few years ago, and now my brother does, I can say why they do it. They have to have all new product on the floor, and companies don't send them blank cases, so they have to do what is termed "gut," which basically is take the game out, and put it in a locked up cabinet. Sure it's not totally new, but it has to be done, since corporate wants the games displayed on the floor. It's not the employees faults, they're just doing what they are instructed to do. Now for the people who run the company, yeah, they don't know what the heck they're doing, cuz people want they're games sealed, I am one of them. Personally I used to make place cards at the one i used to work at, but my district manager when I worked there took them all down and made us put "guts" out because, and he really said this, that's what the customer wants. So it goes to show, most corporate companies really have no clue what the customer wants....

Okay, well then why not just have one "gutted" copy in the store and actually hand the customer one of the nice sealed copy's in the locked case? There'll be several copies there and they ALWAYS go straight for that opened disc. It's an easy solution that GS and EB make overly complicated. BTW, I go to Gamecrazy for my game needs.

A lot of them have stopped carrying DVDs, sadly. Oddly enough though, if you look through their used PS3 games you'll find used Blu-Ray discs. Makes me mad because they won't do that for HD DVD, you'll never find them mixed in with the used 360 stuff. :(

True, but for the games they only get one copy in, or only have one left, well, you have to get that one. It's a crappy policy, but it makes sense instead of leaving live product on the floor.

Don't have issues with games. They've always given me sealed new games.

But the HD-DVDs and Blu-ray movies are on the top shelf of the Ps3 games. I'd say 10 movies on each format. I've bought 2 hddvds their. But foir the most part I'd rather spend a few bucks more and get em on amazon.
But I may cheek the local GS if it buy 2 get 1 free. Theirs a few I've thought about but all 3 are at $17.99

Gamestop does have it's good points.
Buy 2 get one free on all dvd/hd-dvd/Blu-ray (used).
the occasional buy 2 get one free on anything used.
and the occasional, trade in 3 games and get an additional $20 of store credit.
The problems are the sales pitches, and bias for the format of the sales persons choice.
And of course the prices. I have NEVER purchased a brand new game there. I will either wait for a sale at Target, or wait for the $5 reduction when a new title finally shows up used.

Some of the Gamestops currently have Buy 2 get 2 Free, or even Buy 2 get 3 Free (true, I've seen it) on their used DVDs. You can get exceptional deals on season sets, etc., but I've rarely found enough that I wanted. They do have the occasional BR and HD-DVD in the mix, but all I've ever found is Aeon Flux (didn't want) and King Kong (already have).

Worth hunting, though!

Try using UNDU adhesive remover. You can get it a WM, Target, etc:

http://www.kitchen-classics.com/adhesive.htm

It removes the sticker and the goop very well. If there is sticky residue left, just scrape it with more UNDU and wipe with a paper towel quickly. I've been able to get most GS/EB stickers off in a snap. I've even used it to get them off N64 boxes back in the day (not recommended unless you are overly patient!).

I bought the Fast and the Furious 1 and 2 almost new at EB for like $12.00 each...the movies were actually new but for the owner to be able to sell to EB had to openned it first and sell as used
