I recently picked up an HD70. I saw it on promotion at a Big Box type store and decided to shop around online to see what I could find. I used a pricegrabber type website that finds the item and gives you the prices to compare from each vendor. Anyway, I chose the lowest priced vendor that looked reputable. This may have proven to be a mistake. I don't know much about the rules here, and I'd post their name just to steer others clear of them, but that's probably another thread and might violate some sort of rules since I don't think I'm supposed to post about pricing or vendors. Anyway, said vendor tells me that the HD70 I'm purchasing is an "Import Model" and will only offer me a 1 year warranty that only covers labor, not parts, and it is through the company I am purchasing it through, NOT through Optoma and that Optoma offers me no direct manufacturers warranty. I ask if the projector is used, stolen, refurbished.. their answer is no. It is an identical projector. They will not clarify what "Import Model" means, so I go ahead and order the cheapest one despite high pressure sales tactics. Can anybody tell me if they've heard of such a thing? Is there a difference in projectors, or was the company just lying and trying to sell me some BS warranty? After the fact I read lots of negative reviews about this company's high pressure sales tactics and out and out lying about things. If this transaction goes smoothly I doubt I'll order from these people again!

just a quick reply,

Optoma offers 2 years out of the box, not none.

Are you outside the US? I haven't heard of the "import model"

Good luck!

I mentioned this to the customer service rep I was speaking with. I saw no mention on their website of an "import model" and fail to see why even if the projector was imported from another country the warranty would be different. This company has terrible customer service and I'm wondering if it wasn't just a ploy to try and sell me an extended warranty or get me to pay more money.

Am I allowed to post up my experience with this company? I will admit that I got the projector for 200 less than what the Big Box stores were charging, but I have a feeling that if I ever need customer service in the future I will be up S Creek.

I can't post the link to Optomas website, but it does appear that they have a 2 year manufacturer's warranty. Yet this company.. let's call them "Roadway Photo" says on their website the item is brand new, but only carries a 1 year limited warranty. What gives?

Is this company from Brooklyn? Many, many people have had nothing but problems buying from online stores from Brooklyn.

I don't believe they're in Brooklyn, but they are in New York. Some people are telling me I may have bought a "Gray Market" item that is not meant for resale in the US. I've done some research online about these sorts of issues. Poor customer service, trying to upsell people on things they don't need, lying, etc. This company has some extremely poor reviews. However, if I get the projector, and it's an Optoma HD70, I'll have gotten an amazing deal. We'll see if I actually get what I ordered. If not, I'll call my credit card company.

I've read that sometimes the sellers claim the projector does not come with a bulb. Then they try to upsell you the "bulb" The price is then the same as the other stores selling the projector.

I've heard they'll tell you all sorts of lies to upsell you. That seems to be the number one complaint. People were told they'd received models with non-english instructions, or were told their digi cams came with "starter" batteries and that they should upgrade batteries and chargers. People received their stuff, but the customer service people are rude and attempt to upsell. As if purchasing an 800 dollar projector wasn't enough!! Regardless, we'll see what actually comes in the mail. There was no mention of it not having a bulb or anything ridiculous like that.

I have 5 posts now, so I can post up the link to the reviews of the seller.

The deal I got was pretty good, but I'm not sure the extra 200 dollars wouldn't have been worth paying for the piece of mind.

I am pretty sure that is a scam site. I would cancel your order now and call your credit card company. The HD70 can be had for under $700 after rebate at an authorized dealer.

http://www.bwayphoto.com/Default.asp?&l=broadwayphoto is their web page. I should have known getting a projector for 599 after rebate when local stores have it for 800 was too good to be true. Oh well, we'll see if it comes or not. If it does, I might just keep it and see how things go. I just know that I'll never do business with these people in the future and hopefully this thread may serve as a warning for others. Don't trust every website that's on those "Pricegrabber" type deals websites, some are shady! I'm hoping this transaction comes out okay though.
