Hey guys, new to the forums. Just picked up my tv about 1 1/2 weeks ago and just noticed a problem about a few days ago.

When the tv is just turned on and no signal is going to the tv (just a black screen) you will see a rainbow from the left to the right of the screen. It starts at about 2 inches from the bottom and goes from red to violet in about 5-6 inches then fades out to black.

I let it go as I didnt see it as a problem because I didnt see it watching any movies, watching tv or playing games. That is until Saturday night. I was watching a Mars program on the Science channel around midnight and there where many shots of space and thats when I saw it show up when a signal was being sent through the tv. Its not so much noticeable during the day but you can still see it. ( I know its there. )

I talked to a couple guys in the Home Theater department at work (Im a Mobile Installer for Best Buy) and they said it could be a messed up color wheel or a mirror is out of wack? Thats all they can come up with as theyve never heard of the problem before. But the service guy is coming out on Friday to take a look at it and if he cant figure it out Ill just return it and get a different one possibly just getting the HLT5075S if they dont have mine in stock. Dont get me wrong, the picture is awesome but if thats a defect from making it look even better, I cant wait. Im not going back to my 26" tube! lol :D

Ttt.

Im also currently watching Men in Black onDemand and I noticed when J goes into the training with the military guys, the part where they do the firearm test, there is ALOT of pixelation going on from the strobe light and flash fire. Is that just because its running off the cable or would there be same results from the dvd. I dont have the dvd or I would throw it in and see for myself.

It could be a normal aberration common to DLP’s. Without actually seeing it, it is hard to tell exactly what you are seeing.

The HLT’s thin cabinets have many more aberrations then the HLS series; but they had their fair share too.

I also, have the HLT4675. There are many many aberrations in this set, most of them come from the ultra thin cabinet and its very low quality optics. Specifically, the best picture can be viewed within 60 degrees horizontal (not the 170 listed in the book), and only 10 degrees vertical. Aberrations of all kinds will increase dramatically outside of that range.

Does the rainbow go away with ALL the lights off in the room, no external light coming in, and sitting close to dead center (at least 6 feet to 12 feet away)?

Are you able to post a picture of the problem?

I'd guess the cable is the culprit with the compression and all that...

I watch movies on this TV off and on and usually from upscaled DVDs or high quality DVD/HD rips from my HTPC and I don't notice stuff like that during action scenes.

I do notice it when watching some channels on Comcast HD, though.

Ive been serching around and it seems the rainbow that is associated with dlps is something thats all over the screen in flashes it seems. This isnt like that.

Lights on or off, its still there. Just more prominent when the room is darker or a darker scene comes on. During more colored scenes a normal person wont see it but if you know what it looks like and whene it is, you can pick it out from the scene.

Anyway, I darkened the room up the best I can to get a clear picture as to what Im seeing. It looks like it varies with the center channel but its equal across the screen. Ive tested the shielding on the speaker with my old tube tv and not even a color blip when I held it right next to the screen. So thats not the problem. And dont criticize my wire managment. lol :D Didnt clean those up yet.

Thats what I figured. Just that that particular scene in MIB was the most light-dark quick movement, I guess you can say, that Ive watched on this tv so far. Dont want people comming over and saying my tv looks like garbage. lol

Ok, this is what I see in the pic. Is this the same you see?

Rainbow is horizontal across the screen. The TV is "on" (see light engine reflecting on back wall), but with a black picture.

It is one of two things:
1. TV is defective, so have it replaced or get a refund.
or
2. There is some light on in the room, perhaps a single source, coming in at some weird angle? If that light can be killed, to see what happens. If the light source is killed, and there is still rainbow then the set is defective.

yep, i have the tv on but with no source going through the tv since its the easiest way to see the problem but its there all the time, except when the tv is off. then the screen is all black, like it should be. but like i mentioned earlier, if the tech cant figure it out on friday, im just going to return it and possibly get the 50".

but after reading the owners thread with the bowing associated with going to the larger screen, im weiry about that problem as im not seeing any bowing on my set. (went into the service menu and played with the line test and its straight as an arrow)

so, i know its not nmber 2 as at night there is 0 light in the room besides that comming from the tv. hopefully its just an adjustment that can be made, but i have a gut feeling you cant physically adjust the dlp system.

Assuming the rainbow pattern is coming from inside the set (and not an external reflection), then it most likely the result of shipping damage. Shipping on DLP's is a major issue. A very high percentage of DLPs fail to live through normal shipping.

I just had the manager order me in a new one (should be here by friday) so Im just going to return the one I have. Ive read the stories on here about people getting one problem fixed and then having more problems than what they fixed in the first place. Dont want to end up like that. Just keeping my fingers crossed I dont have any issues with this one.
