View Full Version : eD or HSU?

So I am looking for another sub and have narrowed my choices down to a Hsu VTF-3.3 HO or an eD A7-600. I will place this in a pretty large room, so I want something that is strong enough to shake the foundation :) This sub is to be used only for movies, no music. I haven't found any reviews on the eD, so I am a bit hesitant to pull the trigger. Any suggestions?

Well, if you looking for sound quanity, then it seems fairly obvious that the ED with outclass the HSU.

But if your looking for sound quality, the HSU will probably be the better one there. I don't know that for sure though.

That is kind of my initial conclusion, but like you I am not positive. The few reviews I have found of eD subs are very positive in both sound quality and SPL. So I don't want to just outright discount them. When I was looking for a sub for my family room, many people suggested the Axiom EP-500, but I am not sure it will offer the oomph I need for a dedicated home theater. I ended up with a Velodyne DD-10, but it certainly wouldn't work for this application.

check out the craigsub thread. He did a review of the A2-300, around page 55. It's not the A7-600 but it should give you some idea of the quality of EDs subs. If you can get past the love or hate finish of Ed subs personally I'd go for the A7-600, it's $400 more and has 2 12" drivers compared to 1 for the VTF-3.3. These don't really make for a good comparison. A better comparison as far as price and size and performance would be the A3-300

Actually, price wise they are very similar. The Hsu is $899 + $80 shipping and the eD is $1100 with shipping included. That is why I am categorizing them together. Logic would tell me that the eD is going to be considerably louder, but that doesn't necessarily make it better.

craigsub will be doing a review of the A7-900 sometime. again not the one you have in mind but you get a general idea. the driver in the 900 is in the same family as the 600. not sure when the review will be up though. I dont have an eD sub but just from user opinions it seems like they make great HT subs and are just a tad lacking musically but not by much. if you're watching movies only I'd go eD.

I didn't see the HO in the 1st thread and was going by the MK3 pricing, my bad. yeha it's closer in price with the HO.

Well, after much deliberation, I have decided on the Hsu VTF3.3. Yup, not the HO or with turbo, just the plain jane MK3. From everything I have read (including Craigsub list thread) I should be more than happy with it (and if not, I can always return it). Thanks for all of the input.

HSU puts out a quality product, I'm very happy with mine.

How big is your room? You want foundation shaking you will likely need 2.

Unfortunately, my room is rather large (6000+ Cu. ft.). That was the reason I was originally leaning towards the eD.

Don't discount the A7-600 I have it and it is phenomenal tight, musical and LOUD if you need it to be, plus it can keep up with fast paced bass without sounding muddy or out of control.

No way one HSU sub can fill that room with foundation shaking bass. Two would work, three would be better. I think you should cancel your order if it's not to late and get the E.D.

Check out ebay item# 290141198355

You can buy 2 or 3 of those for the same price.

doesn't seem to extend all that low. going to need something tuned a lot lower and give plenty of output to fill his room.

Very much agree on the Hsu having sold them before...nowhere near enough output to fill a 6Kft3 room in a single. The ED is the ticket in that price range. If you can swing it, the 700 is an even better bet.

Not sure of your price range..but the SVS PB13-Ultra coming out seems to be a very sure thing..pre-order and save $100, get it next month. That's what I'd do. The thing that is really attracting me is the fact that it weighs 155lbs. I love that :-p..also it can be sealed and has the fantastic size of 13". Only problem is there are no reviews, just their reputation. Pre-order would be much easier if they sent a couple out to be reviewed.

I haven't actually ordered it yet (I am currently traveling). I knew the single Hsu wouldn't blow me away, but being directly behind my sitting position I figured would help. As for the eD, I am still considering it, but the lack of reviews concerns me (exlcuding jonnyenglish). Hsu has an excellent reputation and I was kind of relying on that. As for the SVS PB13-Ultra, weighing in at 155lbs is necessarily a selling point (after all, the eD weighs 175lbs :)) I still have some time to consider my options, but I really like the Hsu option..... I think ;)

6000 cu ft, for HT, I'd do a munimum of dual drivers.

If you've been reading the boards here at all lately, lots of good support for eD. also, just got a readers choice from Hometheater sound for thier A5-300

I think you will be pleased with an eD. The only exception might be in the finish.

I got over 6000 sq. ft. and I'm running the 3.3 Turbo in farfield, 50 Hz down and the MTX SW2 with the Dayton 15 inch in nearfield, 50 Hz up. It rocks the area! I had to tune the whole thing down as it was causing the stuff on the bedroom walls to rattle and fall two rooms over from the HT area.

What size port does the A5-300 have? 3 or 4 inch? Just wondering about any port chuffing or noise if really pushed to the limits.

All of our single 12" models have a single 4" aeroport.

That is dual 12", not fair. :-)

Either way, I just noticed the A7 - 900 weighs 435lbs. That is pretty outrageous.

Quality comes in weight. :)
A sub I was going to have made by ED was going to have a total system weight over 1000lbs.

lol..how do you plan on lifting that? I can't even see anyone lifting a 435lb subwoofer...must be more than 1 part.
