I want to build a 18" active subwoofer for my Home Theater (17 x 27 ft room size).

What (Brand and Model) 18" driver should I buy? My Budget is below $500.

And the matching Amp? What Amp and how many watt power minimum?

I use it mostly for movie watching and I like furniture/floor rattling deep bass like those in car audio.

Thanks

car audio isn't about rattling and neither is home audio. and you don't want your home audio to sound like car audio either. car audio is more about SPL and home audio LFE.

You'll find better answers in the DIY Speakers and Subs forum.

You can have your audio system sound however you like. If you like "rattling" bass, then go for it. Dont let people tell you how YOUR system should sound.

Speak for yourself!!! I enjoy crystal clear, revealing, and accurate sound in my car. The DVD-Audio surround system in my TL was missing some low end fill, and accuracy there, so I added an eD sealed sub to it. Made all the difference in the world, nice accurate, fast, and deep. It's all about how you tune the sub and speakers in the car. And I used a sound meter to setup the levels for matching of the 5 speakers and sub for the drivers seat. Any car, and any Home theater can be setup to rattle and pound a person if wanted. Please don't be so quick to catagorize what Car audio is all about. While many of the youth today look for ways to make their trunk lids warp, there are many more who look for quality. There are competitions in the car audio world that not only go for SPL, but also for SQ (Sound Quality). eD, along with other sub manufactures have won many awards in both classes, which shows, it's all about presentation and knowledge on how to get there!

I agree with you that car audio can be tight and accurate. Thats what i meant when I said car audio isn't about things just rattling i.e. your trunk. Whether its for home or car I personally like SQ over anything that goes boom, i just don't think he'll get the type of LFE he wants for HT by drawing a parallel to car audio. Quality is quality no doubt, but home and car audio have both their own nuances. but again thats my opinion and my preference. what ever makes you happy, go for it.

Ok, back to the topic:
What Sub configuration can perform the same quality Bass in HT as in a good sounding car audio? Fact and data please.

Thanks.

Sealed, ported, or Infinite Baffle (IB) can do what you want - just be prepared to spend some $ for enough drivers and amplifier power. It is much harder to get loud & low bass in a home than in a car.

Go to the DIY section and look for topics such and large vented subs and IB designs.

The usual suspects for recommendations are drivers from places like:

Fi (Q series for IB)
Ascendant Audio
Soundsplinter
Mach 5 Audio
Parts Express

For completed subs you can look at:

Seaton Sound
Danley Sound Lab
Hsu
SVS
AV123
Elemental Designs

Other members will add more choices as well.

You can get two Elemental Designs 19Ov.2s for under 400. Should make for quite a bit of output while still sounding nice.
