How many have your left ,center, and right behind your projectors' screen ?

Has it been like that the whole time or have you switched from floor standing to this method ?

How do you like the difference ?

are you asking with an acoustic screen or with a normal screen? Ideally your center speaker should be behind the screen (if its Acoustic) as the sound should be coming from where the image is. I would guess the fronts would also work well behind

As for the difference, it kind of depends on the acoustic screen you get. Some do a better job than others

In my last theater I started with a 54x100 screen and had the speakers below.

When I moved from my Runco 980 to a JVC G15 DILA, I went with a Stewart microperf THX 12'x5' 2.35 screen with the LCR's behind.

This made the movie experience more realistic without compromising the sound quality.

While no screen is TOTALLY transparent, it's effect is swamped by other things like room interactions, etc.

I am just at the finishing stages of my new house and will go to a Stewart Cinewide 12'x5' and place the LCR's behind as well.

I have my mains, center and 1 sub behind my SMX screen. I designed it this way, so I can't tell you the difference. I can tell you that nothing compares with the sound coming right from the screen. Be it vocals (most noticeable) or the effects from the L/R mains, you just end up being totally immersed in the movie. I am very happy with the sound quality of the SMX as well. I have removed the screen from the wall, and people can't tell the difference. No measurement data, so it's just subjective...

Thanx. This is the feedback i'm looking for and the result also.I'm in the planning stage now with the SMX screen being the screen of choice. My subs are on the floor, but the mains will all go behind the screen.

Thanx again KG

I just bought a 12'x5' 2.40:1 Dalite Contour Electrol Hi-Power screen from bebop86. I'm waiting until I move in a couple months before installing it - I'm currently using a fixed frame 2.35:1 screen with my RS1.

When I do install the HP, I'd like to do a setup very similar to Tryg's (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=791264), with my 46" Samsung LCD panel behind it for normal TV viewing.

My question is, if I mount the center channel (Dunlavy SC-I) behind the HP, will the screen have significantly noticable effects on the sound? The left and right channels (Dunlavy SC-IVs) will be behind acoustically transparent material to the left and right of the screen, but I'd like to be able to put the center channel behind the screen as opposed to directly below it.

I have the same question as HogPilot, I plan on my center being behind the screen as well. Is there anything to look for when choosing a screen if we are going this route?

"Significantly noticeable effect..." is a purely subjective matter. Some AT screens have been THX certified (some require an EQ such as Stewart), some that don't (such as Screen Research). I do not think the SMX has gone through the certification, but it is a weave similar to the Screen Research. I know many independent tests have been done on the SMX. As I mentioned above, I can not tell a difference with the screen in place or not. I have Klipsch KLF30s for the mains, a Klipsch center, and a Velodyne 12" sub all behind the screen (9 1/2 ft wide screen)

I suggest you take a look at the screens forum for more specific information. There is also some good information on the SMX site.

HogPilot, after reading your post again, I realized you do not have an AT screen. I would think there would be a noticeable affect of the sound quality from the center channel in this case.

Thanks, I was going to point that out since I didn't make it readily apparent in my original post. I'll just have to live with having the center channel mounted below the screen until I can afford an AT screen and a projector with enough light output to look good on it :)

Another question popped up about the speakers behind the screen.

The speakers will be wall mounted, how far from the screen to avoid any interaction (like the woofers affecting the picture by the air movement) ?

That will depend on the type (material) of the screen. For SMX, it should be 2-3 inches or more. I have my sub and KLF 30's about 3 inches from the screen, and don't notice any screen interaction. The SMX is a fairly heavyweight vinyl, that when stretched tightly, is very stable.

"if I mount the center channel (Dunlavy SC-I) behind the HP, will the screen have significantly noticable effects on the sound? "

Yes. When I first tried my HP I hadn't moved my L/R'ss outward, and it was very muffled.

I originally had a wall mounted screen with the left and right speakers on either side and the center channel below the screen. I redesigned the entire room and now I have all my speakers (3 Triad Golds and 2 SVS PB-12/2's) behind the screen. The entire wall where the screen is has GOM which makes the wall breath very well when the subs are cranking, and the screen doesn't show any signs of vibrations when viewing from the first row of seats. Sonic's wise, I don't really hear any differences and this arrangement makes for a more eye appealing room IMHO.
