View Full Version : Subwoofer port orientation in regards to room

Quick question on port orientation on subwoofers. I'm about to pick up a new sub and planing on putting it in the corner of my living with little room between it the wall. How the port on a subwoofer should be oriented in such a situation in regards to the rest of the room/corner?

My current thing is down firing/down ported, so I've never even had an option. In this case though, the sub will be front ported (A2-300) or rear ported (A3-300) so I have to think about it. If it's facing the wall, does it need a certain amount of room to breathe, or would it be better off shooting out into the room?

If any of you have any particular thoughts on this, and how it's orientation would effect the performance, I'd appreciate it.

You may have to try it different ways to hear which sounds best in your room. If you do aim it toward a wall, you are going to have to allow at least a few inches of clearance.

I hate to dig this up (better than a new thread I suppose), but I have a similar question. Here is my situation:

I have my dayton sub in a corner of my room, with the cone pointed perpendicular to a wall and the vents parallel to an adjacent wall. Hopefully my diagram will help.

I forgot to add the TV; it runs parallel to the couch.

This position does not reproduce mid-low frequencies well, like a concert double bass or the "oomph" of a drum set bass drum. It does, however, do the low frequencies very well, like the earth shaker frequencies of about 30hz and below.

Do I have it oriented incorrectly? How should I adjust it so that it reproduces the sounds more effectively?

Just a suggestion, it looks from your diagram, that the sub can be
pulled forward, towards the back of the couch, and maybe to the
right towards the center of the couch.

I've found that the Parts Express subs (at least the ones I have)
subs are excellent, but have a slightly boomy sound when placed
directly in the corner..........vardo

There isn't much room back there, but there is a bit of room.

I went through the guidelines in the "sub tuning" thread. That corner seems to be the safest and best performing position in the room. This minor adjustment seems to have improved the performance a small amount. I'll have to give it further listening.

Thanks!
