It's hard to get the whole topic in the title, but here it is:

If Plasmas, LCD's and DLP/LCOS TV's were to cost the same, which would you buy?

Let's say you could buy a 50", 55" or 60" TV, whichever size you prefer, in either a Plasma, LCD or RPTV microdisplay for the same price. Which would you buy? What if cost was not a factor? I'm not saying they're free - and you still have to save your pennies to get one. But lets say the plasmas and LCD's came down to the same price as your favorite DLP/LCOS.

It would still depend on other factors, although cost is the main factor for me. I would have to contemplate resolution, contrast, weight, power usage, etc... To me, I think plasma has more vibrant/natural colors, but I'm pretty open minded.

I see LCD is making a lot of improvements and would take one if it saves me some $$$, and the picture quality/black levels was close. Main thing for me is saving money.

Right now, my target is a 50" Panny plasma for around $1.5k. If a 50" LCD with good quality can beat that price by like $200, I would take it.

Now go ask this question in the LCD and RPTV forums and see how the numbers change. . .

Edit: I see that you did, and suprise, surprise the numbers correspond to where you ask it.

Indeed they do, Assayer! The project started yesterday when I encountered (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=875939) the poll in the RPTV forum, and specifically a reply which stated that the poll's results indicated the superiority of RPTV.

Right now, plasma, but I am interested to see how the new 81 series Samsung LCDs look with the local dimming.

Definitely plasma.

I hate the way the glare from lighting affects projection TVs, makes them very unviewable to me in a room with any lighting, which reduces me to afterhours viewing after my family's gone to bed to turned out all the lights.

I don't like the eye burn effect of an LCD TV although I will admit it's great for daytime viewing. I find that LCD televisions are very colorful and bright, but almost to the point where you lose the realism.

Overall plasma is my best option. It has great nighttime viewing - I can lower the picture settings to avoid eye burn, without sacrificing my blacks (vs LCD), and during the day I can crank it to standard or sometimes even vivid and maintain a great picture.

The only TV I haven't tried in my living room is the rear projection, but I get enough of them at the office and I know it wouldn't be suitable for my living room (next to the huge living room window, yah right!)

Are you planning to add up the results of the 3 polls in the three forums and post that info in the poll thread in all 3 forums? Of course, there is the issue of people double or triple voting, which you might be able to filter by screen name, but this is not a scientific poll anyway.

I'm not able to answer the poll question, because my answer ("the TV with the best picture and features") is not included among the answers.

All things being equal - I'd probably buy an LCD. So, why did I buy a Plasma then? Because at 50" I couldn't pass up the deal, and the same size LCD with poorer blacks and response time was about 50% more.

Overall - Plasma has the best pic - but with LCD's getting better and better, and the fact they are lighter (easier to hang) with zero chance of burn in - IMO LCD overall would be the best of everything.

But I sure do love my Plasma and have no regrets!

Every year, I see PCD technology improving and they look better and better.

But in 2007, the best LCD still can't pass the side by side test with a top end plasma for bumps of faces or edge of clouds. They've gotten much better, and I have no doubt in a few more years, they will have the ability to show the details much better than today's best plasma.

I pick plasma today. I might have to change my answer in 3 more years.

Plasma for TV/Movie watching
LCD for a lot gaming

not on the list but I would buy Front Projector. Nothing beats a 120" screen. :)

My opinion (subject to change):

I prefer LCD.

Rear Projection/DLP feels to me like I am watching a flashlight,
especially when the picture drops off at viewing angles other than
straight on. Anyone else get this feeling?

The glare of Plasma bothers me...I am not just talking about the reflections of the room. The shiny screen, while making the picture "pop," is a distraction to me, and is too similar to watching a CRT (not that this is bad, I just want something different).

LCD thus gets my vote. I like the matte/dull look of the picture (it seems more realistic to me), and I "feel" like I am watching a different technology (different from the CRT that is).

Again, just my preference, and based on purely subjective reasoning.

Plasma

wide viewing angles
handles fast motion
rich picture quality

The major downside is light reflection, which you can help minimize by darkening a room with window blinds and such.

LCD isn't even close to being in the same class as Plasma despite 120mhz.

Of course the most god-like option which isn't on the list is 3 chip Front Projection DLP. This absolutley blows away everything.
