Hello.
We are building a new hometheater and it will be complete in about a week. I need to call them at some point tom. and place some orders.
We have a little more than a 100 inch screen (getting a blueray player also).

Should I get a 1080p screen at the moment or something like 1080i or 720p?
I heard the 1080p tech is still pretty new, and the good models still cost more than the lower resolution ones.

What do you think would be the idel choice?

How far from the screen you plan on sitting. 1.5x the width? Less? More?

I am not sure the width of the screen, but the seats are likely 12 feet from the screen, maybe more...

Thanks

Good 720p projector are Mitsubishi HD1000 $800 , Benq w500 $950, Epson 400 $900 after rebate and Optoma HD70 $680 after rebate.

The cheapest 1080p is the Epson 1080 which is $2800

Unless that price difference means little to you, 720p is by far a better bang for your buck

Would you guys get a 720p (as mentioned in the post above), or a 1080i instead?

No 1080i PJs, just 1080p.

Based on your viewing distance, unless you just have to have 1080p, get a good 720p and spend your savings on the theatre, like great sound.

Thanks for the info.

Do you know if these recievers:
Yamamha RXV861B
or
Integra DTR 7.8

are able to show video in true 1080p? Someone told me the recievers make a differnce as well...but I have no idea how to check if recievers are able to do that.

but I have no idea how to check if recievers are able to do that.

You go to the Mfgrs web site and usually a spec sheet will show the capabilities.

What you are looking for is the switching and upscaling capabilities since receivers only take a supplied video/audio feed from Sat, OTA antenna, Cable, DVD player, Gaming systems etc. process it and send it on to the projector, extracting the audio in the process.

If some of those sources are not HD the receiver may have some upscaling capability.

Keep in mind that an old DVD player that extracts 480 lines of video resolution won't look like a Blueray or HD DVD player and their 1080P content no matter how good your receiver is.

As for 720 versus 1080P projectors yes it is fairly new but the Sony line of 1080P projectors is over 2 years old. You haven't mentioned your budget but if you have the $ there are some good 1080P projectors on the market that would future proof your system.

720 for now, 1080 later. Think about it.

I am not sure on the budget as of yet, I will check tomorrow and let you guys know (asking my dad since its for him).

I am fairly certain that the projector the saleman was mentioning to us was the Sony VPL-VW50---What do you think of that product?
This is fairly small HT store in my town, and they actually had to order this product since they hadn't installed a 1080p projector for anyone (or for their store). The saleman called me earlier today and said it was "the way to go"--their store demo was currently using a 720p demo. (Ironically I told him I wanted a ps3 for blueray and a 1080p projector depending on price, THEN he added to his store---I should ask him for a discount for finally getting him to set this up in his store).

Anyways, would it be too much trouble for you guys to check if the recievers show true 1080p? I have the links right here but have no idea what I'm looking at?

Also, if I want to get more HDMI slots in the future is that possible without getting a new dvd player?

The Optoma HD80 1080p DLP is $2,699 at Projector People with a free mount. I agree that 720p is much far better bang for your buck. NO contest whatsoever.

The VPL-VW50 (aka the Pearl) has gotten positive reviews from most places I've run into. In person, it looks great. The newer PJ's have higher contrast ratios (blacker blacks, whiter whites, and everything in between) but unless the extra coin is worth it, it's a great buy for the value.

With your seating distance and size of screen, I would not make my choice based solely on resolution. Any difference between 720p and 1080p would be lost on you. (NOTE: this statement is not true if you bought a non-smoothscreen based 720p LCD, which would likley demonstrate some screen door effect at those distances)

Thus, pick a budget and get the best projector that you can for the money. The Pearl that you refer to would be a fine choice. There are lots of other good projectors out there as well.

Just missing too much information to help you make a choice.

Budget
Ambient Light of the Room (can you make it 100% black)
Ceiling Height
Exact Screen Size and ratio (16:9 or 2.35:1 ?)
Are your back rows on risers? We don't want the projector hanging so low that people bump their heads
Will you be watching SD-DVD's (e.g.: Do you need a good scaling projector?)

All of the above is important for making a decision, but budget is the biggest one. If you have 10K, then you have a lot more options than if you have $2k.

You were looking at the wrong page for the integra here is a section of the features:

"CONNECTIVITY:

HDMI Version V1.3a Repeater
HDMI Bandwidth 1080p
HDMI Deep Color Capable (36bit)
Component Video Upconversion
Analog to HDMI Upconversion
480i to 480p Processing DCDi
1080p Upscaling - (NO)"

So it will pass 1080P signals, it will convert analog to digital video and pass that to the projector minimizing the number of cables you may have to run to the projector. but it will not convert non- 1080P material to 1080P. The Sony projector will actually do that as it is 1080P native.

On the page you linked it indicated that the receiver has the necessary decoders to take full advantage of the new sound formats contained on the Blueray disks and HD dvds. HDMI 1.3 is the newest format and it has it.

The Yamaha is HDMI 1.2 and lacks the necessary sound decoders to take advantage of the newest formats. I would rule it out based on your plans for Blueray.

I think you mean receiver not DVD player. And Yes it's possible. But you will need to add a switcher.

By the way from your description of your buying process you need to do some shopping around on price. If you are not getting a substantial discount off MSRP you are paying too much for the Sony. Buying from a shop that hasn't done a 1080P install sounds like they haven't done any high end installs in the last 2 years.

The sponsors (AVS) of this forum sell that projector give them a call.

There have been plenty of reviews of the Sony projector, do some Googling around it's a good unit. Also read about the JVC -RS1.

If I were you I would inform myself alot more - dont rush to order things. A good
site to go to besides AVS is projector reviews.com - Good Luck and welcome
