Well, we got the replacement RS1 (to replace the one that was pretty much dead out of the box last week) up and running and it, thank heavens, seems fine.

I noted that one should use the high altitude mode at above 900 meters, according to the manual. We are at about 975 meters (3200 feet).

I assume that the high altitude mode simply runs the fans faster for cooling? Or is there something else going on as well? Would there be any negative effects in our situation to running in normal fan mode other than shorter bulb life?

FYI, it is normally quite cool in the theater room, typically 68-70 degrees and we never run in high bulb mode.

I hate to increase the noise levels if I don't have to....

Just as a note for this thread, I just received my RS1 last week. I read the manual at time of installation and saw there was a "High Altitude" setting. It mentions in the manual (as stated above - 900m). I live in Calgary and well, I am at 900 meters...

I turned that feature ON and noticed immediately a higher fan noise. After a few hours, I decided to turn it off to decrease the noise level. Lo and behold, I was barely able to get through an entire movie and then the unit would shut down. No warning whatsoever! I thought that there was a problem with my projector. I figured that it was heat-related so I brought the lamp setting back down. Still didn't cure it. It finally stopped shutting down when I went to High Altitude mode ON.

So, I have to say, JVC knew about this little flaw... It certainly makes more noise in this mode but given the other qualities of this projector, I can certainly forgive this one design issue.

Hmmm.. Thanks for the information. I was tempted to run mine (RS2) in low altitude mode even though I am at 4000 ft.

It is a good bit noisier in the High-Altitude mode.

I read a theory somewhere here that, if possible, we should all use the high altitude/high fan setting to prolong lamp life since heat is its enemy.

Any thoughts on this?

Wow- I too live in Calgary and have always run my RS1 in high altitude mode. That was until last Saturday when I had a movie night at my house. I turned it off for the movie which was around two hours. Lucky I did not have the ill effects. In the future I will keep in on.

BigRock,

Is your projector ceiling mounted? If so, check the length of the mounting bolts used to secure the mount to the projector, we have seen numerous cases of long bolts deforming the internal ducting and allowing hot air to blow on a temp sensor, causing shutdown. Make sure your mounting bolts screw in no more than 5-6 turns after the threads engage. Normally, if this is a mounting bolt problem, no long-term damage is done to the projector and it will operate normally upon proper installation.

Cheers,

Interesting. I hope my bolts aren't too long.
