Is DRM Invading your Privacy and Stealing your Rights?
Abstract...
Security and privacy continue to be hot topics for consumers. With the frequent introduction of new laws and technology, it’s easy to become paranoid about being spied on, intruded upon, interfered with, or otherwise inconvenienced by anyone from Microsoft to Big Brother.
Corporations are inserting their DRM (Digital Rights Management) technology onto CDs, DVDs, and secretly onto our hard drives, preventing consumer from controlling, duping, or even routinely transferring songs and movies they've legitimately purchased.
The author, Christy Bates, faces the issues of privacy and security in the music and movie industry head-on, asking pointed and educated questions about DRM technology and whether or not it can be trusted. She contends that consumers are spied on like common criminals, while pirates routinely circumvent the controls. She makes a compelling argument that DRM violates our basic privacy and consumer rights, while at the same time even cramping the potential of the digital revolution.
