Hi.. I have a Barco 1208/2 that I really enjoy. I have a fixed 2.35:1 screen that is 4 meters (13.12 Feet) Wide and 1.8 Meters (5.90 Feet) High, displaying a resolution from my HTPC of 1692 x 720P @ 72hz.

Anyway, I want to try to resolve 1080P.. but cant do it with 8 inch tubes..

So, I want to know a few things:

1) Can you turn a 1208 into a 1209?

2) What parts are needed (Guessing at lenses, Tubes & neck boards)?

3) Where can I get the appropriate parts to do this?

4) Is this a completely stupid idea?

5) I live in New Zealand.. The bottom of the earth.. I freighted my 1208 from Canada and its freight was not cheap ($1000).. Tubes & parts would be a lot cheaper than a 'new' 1209 or larger..

Any suggestions?

You will need tubes, the tube housings and CElements, Some front sheet metal that holds the 1209S housings in place, and HD10 series lens's.
I have a new set of tubes and one 1209S housing available.

"I want to try to resolve 1080P.. but cant do it with 8 inch tubes.."

Have you actually given it a go? You might be surprised.

Yes I have tried.. and it wasn't pretty..

I was trying to get 1080 x 2500 (1080 @ 2.35:1 Ratio) (Should be 2538, but projector limitations stop this) resolution..

Basically, my horizontal lines were bleeding over each other.

2500x1080???? No wonder it didn't look good.

The res you want is about 1920x816 for "1080p" on a 2.35:1 screen.

Not in a 16:9 raster on a 1208/2. That has the older electronics and 180 tubes. It won't do 1080p.

Not only will a 1208/2 NEVER do that, you do know that a 9" machine won't be able to pull off this resolution, right?

Mark_A_W (and others):

Currently I display 1692 x 720P (2.35:1 Ratio)

When I play back 720P content that is 2.35:1 100% of my screen area is used, and I have 720 Lines of vertical resolution.

When I play back 720P 1.85:1 content, I get 720 vertical lines, and 'Black Bars' Windowboxing the sides, so an effective resolution displayed of 1280 x 720.

If I was to set my resolution to 1920x816, when I watch 1.85:1 1080P content I would only have a vertical resolution of 816 pixels.. Not 1080 Pixels.

I'm now confused.. Is there another way I should be going about this? I use PowerStrip to define my resolutions on my HTPC, but only use the one resolution at the moment.

Person99:

I thought a 9" machine could do this.. hence the reason I'm moving in this direction.

Most people don't run 2.35:1 screens with CRTs because of these issues (decreased resolution on 1.85:1 and 16:9 content). I'm toying with a 2.05:1 screen which you could run a constant area configuration with.

My screen is a fixed microperf.. built in to my dedicated home theatre.. Far too late to change this now :-)

Should I be setting up multiple resolutions of different memory blocks on my projector?

Up until now I havent done this, as I understand the Barco changes blocks when it detects a new frequency.. but my frequency would be the same even at different resolutions..

Until today I thought I had it sorted.. now I am interested to see how others manage 2.35:1 with a CRT.
