View Full Version : PT-AE1000U focus problem or just me?

I just bought a new Panasonic PT-AE1000U that I setup last night. When I went to focus the image I found it to be very difficult. The motor seems to be not very sensitive, but I think I was able to finally do it.

Now for my problem. When I think I have the projector in proper focus and I can actually see some pixel structure up close, I can see a purple haze/shadow? to the top and left of each pixel. Whenever there is white text on the screen and you are standing close to it you can ses this small purple shading/shadow. At first I though it was an effect to make text look 3D, but then I noticed it was there for all text whether it is a menu on the projector, a menu on a DVD, and just part of the movie itself.

My first thought is that the 3 LCDs are not aligned. This looks like the exact same problem I have seen with 3 tube rear projection TVs.

Is this normal? Can I do anything about it? Should I return the projector for another one?

you are seening chromatic aberrations. It is caused by the lens. No need to return the unit.

Wow, that is exactly what it looks like! So this is normal and common? Do all pannys do this?

All high end projectors with advanced lenses that i have seen do this.

Some are better than others with this. The Panny lens is not as high quality as some of the real high end ones (which is due to the fact the lens can potentially be one of the most expensive parts on a projector). But, CA is a physical known with lenses. There is no way to remove it completely.

You might also be seeing the Smoothscreen. This tends to ever-so-slightly soften the image, which can make it a bit more difficult to feel like it is focused.

I own the Panny and haven't noticed this at all. It looks plenty sharp to me, I love this damn projector. It's my first FPTV and I couldn't be happier. Hope you can get used to it and not let it bug you too much. Put on King Kong, it looks outstanding on the Panny! :)
