I love my SANYO Z5 (you called it a Sony), but have no knowledge of the Marantz/Sharp model you noted.
Another projector to consider may be the well rated/reviewed Epson 400, which has a generous rebate right now. The Z5 is ~$1100 after rebates ($200 & $100) and the Epson can be had for about $900 after $500 rebate.
Check out reviews of both at Projector Reviews and Projector Central.
You'll probably be very happy with either choice.

I would also look at the benq W500 and the samsung 710 deal at tiger direct. Read the thread on this board.
I have the Sharp dt-500 very similar to the 3000,I love it ,beautiful pic on 106" dw wilsonart screen. Some complain of noise with these units but I rarely hear mine, only at startup and cool down mode. :D

I have the 106" HP and a xv-z3k.
I think you'll see SDE with the Sanyo. I sit at 11 feet and have very good eyesight and can see the beginnings of SDE with the z3k, which has a better fill factor.
Very satisfied with the z3k.
Blindingly bright if you shelf-mount the pj

The MARANTZ VP4001 and SHARP XV-Z3000 are similar and therefore both excellent units. Many have the XV-Z3000 since the Marantz was priced very high, however that no longer seems to be the case since I got mine for less than the Z3000.
