View Full Version : Haunting on HBO and HBO HD Wed 25th
bgillyjcu 07-19-07, 09:07 PM In case you boys don't have the HAUNTING DTS...(which all Subwoofer heads should), it will be on HBO and HBOHD on Wednesday July 25th. I figured that I'd post this for people who don't have it and might want to give it a watch. I'm not sure how the DD presentation will be on HBO, but the DTS Version is UNREAL!
i was watching a little bit of this yesterday on HBO-HD and the DD version sounded incredible
i'll have to netflix this one to check out the DTS track
bgillyjcu 07-19-07, 10:53 PM The DTS track was made "special" for this movie. If you thought the DD was incredible you'll probably mess yourself if you can get your hands on the DTS version which is no longer in print...

this is funny, i already own the dvd and forgot that i had it
i remember buying it now along with gladiator because they both have the DTS ES 6.1 and had just bought my denon 3802 with the new DTS ES discrete format and wanted to try it out
cool, now i have something to watch tomorrow
do you happen to know if any other dvd's were done in DTS ES 6.1 discrete ?
by the way, looks like this dude has 125 of them for sale for $1.52 & 7 bucks shipping *ebay item# 190131836957*

I DVR'd it last time it was on. I thought it was decent, but admittedly...every time I hear something broadcast in DD on HBO, I always think that it doesn't sound as good as it does on DVD. Something to it, or am I just nuts?
If you DVR it, the first spot that caught my attention was the unseen thing knocking on the door scene (I think around 40min into the movie).

mojomike 07-20-07, 10:42 AM I can't speak specifically about the broadcast of "The Haunting", but other HD broadcasts like WOTW, Pulse, and Flight of the Phoenix all had very powerful sound and seemed to compare favorably to the DVDs.
i dusted off my old DVD yesterday and that first pop from the fire place scared the $hit out of me. wasn't expecting it and a great example of why full range speakers across the rear can be very useful
i did think that they were a little overzealous with the LFE every time a door opened or closed
mojomike 07-21-07, 11:16 AM There is no question that the over-the-top sound is an attempt to compensate for the fact that the movie basically sucks. The sound, however, is a great workout for the entire system.

Iggster 07-22-07, 11:59 PM It was on hd movies this past week and OMFG I have my ht in my bedroom and it was shaking the ish out of my bed. When the movie first started I thought it wasnt gonna have a ton of bass so I put the volume at -30 on my denon (when watching loud I usually have it at -20) but it was the middle of the day everyone was still sleeping and then when the door banging starts omfg lol
Dan Hitchman 07-23-07, 12:11 AM The DTS-ES mix is by far the better of the two. You think the DD version was powerful... just wait!
Hopefully, the 6.1 PCM master mix supervised by DTS and Lucasfilm's Skywalker Ranch used for the DTS encoding will be the one on Blu-ray.
However, the original The Haunting directed by Robert Wise is 1,000 times better as a movie... and no SFX used... just your imagination and some clever photography and editing and lighting!!

Where did you see that this is coming out on Blu-ray?

i have to agree with this
i caught this movie on cable last week in DD and thought it was incredible
i had totally forgot that i bought the DTS-ES DVD 7 years ago and i watched it again and i have to downgrade the DD version from incredible to good and use incredible for the DTS-ES version
the use of effects really scares the $hit out of you, especially if you have a 6.1 or more set-up and you're watching at "reference" levels
sometimes, the use of the rear channels, when done right and it catches you off guard, can do a great job at startling you which is pretty much one job of a horror movie. i remember the first time i watched the new version of the exorcist with the deleted scenes and the new surround mix. a simple thing like the loud phone ringing in one of the surround speakers scared the $hit out of me and a friend who were watching
the haunting, as a movie isn't that great, the plot and acting sucks but sometimes you just want to have some fun

Well, with Paramount finally using PCM on upcoming titles, I only assumed The Haunting would get released with PCM. I was just hoping that they would release the re-mixed by DTS and Lucasfilm version with the original 6.1 discrete stems created from that work.

Kevin12586 07-23-07, 01:05 PM ^^^^ No problem, I thought you read somewhere that it was being released. :)
